Maybe you've discussed this in another video. The whole single broken-box/double broken-box for tracking confused the hell out of me for a long time because sometimes they would show up and other times they wouldn't. I finally realized that they only appear with a certain combination of settings. First off, you have to be in One-Shot AF mode. These broken boxes don't appear with Servo AF. And if you only use back button AF, you have to have One-Shot AF selected both in the main menu (AF menu, Page 1 > AF operation > "One Shot AF") *and* in the details of the back button you have customized (Custom Settings menu, Page 3 > Customize buttons > [*] > Metering and AF start > INFO > "One Shot AF" or "-"). Great video, by the way. Your channel is excellent.

Answered the exact question I had, thanks! These boxes seem weirdly inconsistent while I'm doing Back Button AF, Subect + Eye tracking on my Canon R6. Sometimes I was getting a white box following birds around, sometimes not, and it wasn't while I had the button down to activate AF, so it was confusing the hell out of me.

Congratulations to reaching the 1k subscriber mark! That's huge. How are things going? Also, what are your thoughts about the Canon EOS R5 C? I just may preorder that 💪.

Man, I so wish the single spot AF box smaller; at least half the size it is currently. I'm starting to miss the one of my old 5D Mark 3, which - if I remember correctly - was deffinitely smaller.

At least compared to my 5D4, the spot AF box on the R5 is the same size as the spot AF box in the viewfinder of the 5D4. (With a 70mm lens, both cover the same area at the same distance.) I don't remember the 5D3 having smaller AF points, but I sold mine like 4 or 5 years ago. I could get behind an option to adjust the spot AF size though. I know smaller would compromise DPAF performance, but I wonder if a shorter rectangle that's the same width would work. In theory that would still cover the same amount of pixels horizontally for AF, but have a more precise vertical spread.

@@PointsInFocus This is something Fujifilm bodies can do (adjusting the size of the focus box from very large to very small). Unfortunately, their focus tracking and eye detect capabilities are not particularly capable compared to Canon and Sony.

So, I'm just trying to confirm the functionality for the R6 as it relates to Subject Detection Boxes at 6:25 in the video. For the life of me, I can't seem to get subject detection boxes to appear for the life of me anymore and I'm at a loss as to what specific setting or shooting mode I need to be in to get them to appear.

Double check that the "Subject to Detect" setting on the AF1 menu is not set to "None/Off."

Hi Jason, quick question, why dot I see a red grid of boxes after taking the photo and previewing it on the LCD screen?

The 2 reasons I can think of off hand are: 1) AF point display, on the Play 5 menu page isn't on for some reason. 2) If you're using back button focusing, and weren't holding the AF on button down when you made the exposure, the AF system was technically off, and the camera doesn't know where the focus point was when you focused.

Was there a certain firmware where focus guide was only made available while in MF mode? On my R6, I have my "Lens electronic MF" set to One-Shot enabled (magnify). So even when on AF mode, while the camera is holding focus in one-shot I am able to manually override using the manual focus ring. Previously this would also bring up focus peaking & focus guide which I really liked. But now on Firmware 1.5 this is not happening. Was this a recent change by Canon do you know?

As far as I know, no. Though the focus guide doesn't show up in magnified view, and AFAIK, this has been the case going back to at least FW 1.2.

@@PointsInFocus thanks for the reply! I turned off "magnify" so now settings are just "One-Shot enabled" and the peaking and focus guide did come back! I could have sworn they were there even with magnify turned on, but anyway thank you for that tip. I think I will just move on, as I find the magnify feature to be more beneficial than the peaking or focus guide when really trying to be precise when manually focusing :)

You present a lot of information which is great - but it would be better I believe, if you spent more time showing what you are talking about while talking about it rather than just you talking speaking directly at the camera.

If I wasn't confused before, I certainly am now. All the terms and fast talking without a camera example make this video useless to me at this time. When I learn enough about the Canon R5 auto focus, maybe I'll come back and try again.

I'm sorry you found this confusing. Cameras have just gotten so much more complicated then they use to be, and that doesn't make it any easier to learn, never mind explain. That said, I appreciate that feedback, and hope that on a future visit when you're more comfortable with the camera, you'll find this more helpful. In any event, remember in the end it's your pictures that matter more than knowing how to use every bell and term on the camera; find something that works for you and go make awesome pictures.
