Drive-in Theater Speaker Restoration

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This speaker was found with my Uncle's belongings a few months ago. It was a perfect opportunity to make another restoration while also making a nice piece to remember him by. It's was also a good opportunity to do a lot of polishing on this restoration piece which apparently some people really like. Unfortunately there was no sand blasting in this video :-(
If anyone can do some super-sleuthing and figure out where the ticket was jammed into

all wrong, or you'd have interference from every speaker on the planet it's from the wire wrapped potentiometer, known for ages to cause interference, that is why all newer potentiometers are now carbon film types also the fact that those suckers were supposed to run on 70 volt amplifiers because you did not want some minor 10-12 volt ignition noise to stomp on your audio signal. the whole standard was built like a tank, and is still in use today in many areas

I LOVED going to the drive-in in the 50s when I was a kid, then in the 70s and 80s when my kids were kids. I loved everything about it...driving into the spot, setting up the speaker in the window, playing in the playground in front of the screen,, sitting outside the car in lawn chairs, and the concession stand was the best. We didn't have a lot of money, but the drive-in was one form of entertainment that my parents could afford. The other was the roller rink. Thanks for the memories.

Just a suggestion, try tinning stranded wire with solder before making your connections. Make sure you have a good mechanical connection before soldering components. Always heat your surfaces before touching solder to them and do not move wires before the solder cools. This will give you the best results. The hum is from unfiltered AC. It can be cancelled by placing a capacitor between the potentiometer and the speaker. Good luck on your restorations.

Loved going to the drive in movies growing up late 1950s and 1960s. Running around in pj’s, broken glass strewn “playground”. Lights flash tsp back to the car. And always a few beered-up Dads pissed off heading out for an early wake up forgetting to disengage the speaker with it rattling against the window of their country squire wagon, dragging the cord. I haven't seen a drive in speaker since the 70's when I went into the Army. Our Drive-In was the Old Gyspy drive-in in Bardstown, Ky. Thanks for re-doing it. But, the speakers were mounted 2 to a pole that was usually concrete, so the cars were parked side by side. I went to the drive-in quite often, but I can't remember what they played.

I can't tell you how many of those speakers I picked up off the ground and rehung on the double sided post. My other job was to pop popcorn in a commercial popcorn trailer behind the snack bar. Oh the memories. My mother driving me and my 2 sisters to the Telephone Road Drive In in South Houston. That same speaker would have been perched on the door of our 1962 Ford Galaxie 500. We would burn a mosquito coil on the open glove compartment door to try to fend off the horrid beasts. My sisters and I would go to the playground located just under the movie screen and play on the swings, slides and teeter-totters if we lost interest in the movie. And of course, there was always the trip to the concession stand in the back to get popcorn, hot dogs, Frito pies and a Coke.

Awesome resto dude! You inspired me and I restored a set of Eprads and wired them up to Bluetooth. Now they’re our family outdoor theater speakers.

couple things i noticed.. firstly, nothing about the wires had anything to do with theft prevention. Secondly, the volume knob doesn't work AS a potentiometer, it IS a potentiometer. ALL volume knobs of that vintage are potentiometers.

True about the wires. Copper wasn't a high theft item then. Most wiring back then didn't use copper. If the volume knob quit working, you could always just pick up a guitar volume knob and get the same thing. Most of their pots would probably fit.

The drive in I go to has been around since 1954 but they don't have speakers anymore, just the poles. you tune your radio in to a station they have. (Bring a battery operated radio so your battery doesn't die) the closest one to me that still has the speakers is up in New York, the Glen Drive-In

Damn, seeing one of those brings back memories of my all time favorite trip to the drive-in. When I was a lad I worked my butt off painting and cleaning an office to earn money for a trip to see Terminator 2 AND Point Break on the same trip. We had a full size pickup truck with a mattress in the back and a cooler chocked full of snacks.

I worked at the St. Albert Alberta Drive In Theatre in my early teens (1970s) and even brand new in the box speakers were never polished like that. But it does look nice. We would get them 10 to a box.

Only thing that kept it from being MY 100percent evaluation are the screws in the base plate. I think a nice oval head that tapers into the metal floor flange would look great. LOVE watching these restorations.

I saw that speaker driver at the beginning and thought to myself "if it still works use it, or maybe he will recone and foam it. That way he gets the right sound"... however having redone some driver repair myself it is definitely easier to get a new speaker.

Something to consider, for strictly ornamental iron pipe projects like your stand, rather than tightening it down with a wrench and risking marring the pipe just put some Loctite on the threads and tighten it by hand. When the Loctite sets up you'll have a permanent joint and have no chance of marking up the pipe. As a bonus, in the case of parts that you need to have positioned in a certain configuration, you can have them rotated to any position with complete accuracy. It's nice to see you saving a piece of americana.

Yes, this happened, and I went to the offender's KZread page, found a video that still allowed comments, and laid this missive there: ...so there I was, watching a video wherein a very skilled man was restoring a movie theater speaker. He had just finished cleaning and buffing the housing to a pristine lovely shine. I sat in astonishment, admiring the artist's work. Suddenly and without warning, a hairy armpit appears! I jump away from tablet's screen surprised and disgusted as horrible chanting disturbs the peace of my room! I find the "skip ad" key as quickly I can, but the mood is altered, that ASMR tingle gone... Thanks Billie Razors!
