Antique Valve Lapper / Grinder Restoration
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I found this rusty valve lapper on ebay and I thought it looked really cool. It certainly seemed like a perfect opportunity for a restoration video. I was worried about not being able to fix the knobs since the wood was splitting, but I decided to go out and buy a wood lathe and make some new ones myself. This was my first time using a wood lathe, so don't be too hard on me.
I was very surprised at how well paint job on this restoration came out considering the piece was so rusty, the original casting had such deep grooves, and I didn't even use the proper type of body filler.
Even though it is a beautiful tool, I don't see the purpose of it since the tried and true valve grinding stick with suction cups on either end is cheaper and easier to use in every conceivable way. Your best option is probably to use a a valve grinding drill attachment.

My Dad who was an old time car mechanic always taught me to give the lapper tool a half or a quarter turn by lifting off the valve seat to gain an even valve seat lap. Your video sure takes me back to the days in the garage with my Dad. Thanks.
Wow, haven't seen one of those in a really long time! My uncle used one all the time. They do work, but the trick it use valve grinding compound between the head and the valve and be very patient. 1 valve can take 15-20 minutes to get just right, and only use the weight of the grinder without any pressure.
You did a beautiful job of restoration and it turned out great. Your wood lathe skills are very good for a beginner on a wood lathe. I only wished you had explained to us exactly what this tool was designed for. Many of us had no idea what it was. I got the impression after reading one viewers remarks that it was designed to grind valves on cars. If he hadn’t made that comment, I would have been totally clueless. As a restorer, always remember that not all of your viewers are skilled mechanics, tool and die makers, woodworkers, etc. Please humor us and better explain what you are restoring, what it’s used for, and how old it is. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you work and will continue to watch your videos. Great job!!!!

could also be for metal taps and valves in plumbing.
I'm 74 now, but when I was in my mid-20s I bought one of these from Sears & Co. It would turn forward, say 2/3 of a turn and then backwards 1/3 of a turn, then forward again. I couldn't get this to run slow enough to tell. It worked great you just had to put a lot of time into it. You started with coarse compound, cleaned that off then medium and clean that off then fine compound and clean that off. It did a great job of lapping them to each other. I found a modern listing for them: www.sears.com/rotary-9051-cup-valve-grinder-for-9050/p-A014138136?plpSellerId=1800toolrepair1&prdNo=11&blockNo=11&blockType=G11

So was this valve lapper just a tool to clean the top of valves. Am I understanding your comment or am I rong. Please help me out hear.
Tip, when you put the bearings in. I'd have put little grease inside the bearing valley and put them in before assembly. The grease would have held em in place.
I can't help thinking that there a lot of youngsters out there saying "So- - That's what that is but what is a valve?? Good Job for sure and pure entertainment~!!
Clever gearing design, turning single-direction rotary movement into back-and-forth!
Nice work sir! I agree, the paint finish was quite nice.
I like it, can’t beat the old ways sometimes. Thanks for the video youngster, enjoyed watching the process.
That looks stunning
Beautiful work ! Now I know what a valve lapper is. :-)
Didn't know that tool existed. Its clear to see why the hand tool is better. Neat restoration though.
Well, my dad was a car mechanic and I used to help him by grinding valves by hand like you showed up. I didn't even knew that was a kind o grinder like that. Nice restoration btw.
Well for someone who had no idea what this tool was for, now I do, thanks. Good restoration.
Lovely work
Hi R/S 👋👋👋 good to see you 🤝🤝🤝 very good restoration grinder valve lapper 👍👍👍🔥💣👌🏽
Your rationalization for buying a lathe is priceless.....which reminds me....I'm out of toothpicks so I better go out and pick up a new band saw! Great job....best wishes for the holidays.
Good work 👍
beautiful restoration! subscribed.
Felicitaciones!!! Herramienta indispensable en un taller para la reparación de motores, 🇵🇪
You should get a Bounty paper towel sponsorship.
Crazy how impressive that can be
Excellent restoration, very well done Sir! It's a beautiful hand tool, but I'm not sure that it necessarily saved time or was anymore accurate at lapping/grinding valves in than the demonstrated stick and rubber sucker method that I was used too! But really nice to see it restored back to its former glory. Greetings from Southport UK.
Neat little tool! Works best on clean valves, either new or wire-wheeled. And to get the cup to stick it takes a drop of oil or lapping compound in the cup. Try to keep it in line with the valve and don't force it. Works way faster than a spindle lapper.
❇️❇️❇️❇️ Perfect restoration bro 🔥🔥❕
Saludos desde chicago good video
Excellent job. Paint work turned out extremely well... WELL DONE!!! Though doing it by hand seems to be much more effective. 10/10
Good work, they would work some what ok, it depended on your lapping compound..
16:54 "What are you doing a KZread over here? Yeah, I'll help you with your welding. Now, hold that there." "Shouldn't we be wearing gloves?" "Nah, now look away."
Great!
YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE RESTORERS THAT I HAVE SEEN. OTHER THAN THAT, I LIKE YOUR WORK!
Well now I know why i have never seen one in all my years of engine work..they work like crap.. but nice restoration
Really coool
Good job R/S
супер концовка! Мучался с восстановлением, а в итоге обычная деревянная палка эффективней)))
Nice😊
Looks like genie
I restored one of those last year in my Industrial Technology class. I’m missing the bit for it though.
nice video
This is the main reason why they stopped doing it ...nice tool but not effective...😎
Great video! Thank you! I noticed that you had two different stations for polishing? Why is that? Hope you make a tour video of your shop one day! Thanks again!

I found the same tool, only in unused condition, in my workshop a month ago lo
Hi. Could you say how long the pieces were left in the degreaser, etc?
Good job, I wanted to ask what is the spray you used after the polishing for rust protection. Thank you 😊

I have a 1960 transmission from a 61" wide industrial paper sheet, that I would like to know if Restoration Station will be willing to rebuild. Is this the type of project RS would like to do?

I just bought one of these a couple days ago. Had no idea what it was till I posted a picture of it in my tool restoration group. I'm not a mechanic but I'll restore for 2 reasons. Experience and conversation starter. Great job. What was the paint you used?
Seems to me that it’s a better way to lap valves.
Super jest ta wiertareczka pozdrawiam serdecznie 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏

I actually have that same tool (in much better shape) that I use to lap the valves on Model A and Model T engines.
You need some lapping paste
👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
La restauración te quedo perfecta !! Pero sin duda para ese trabajo, lo mejor, es el mango de madera con la ventosa !!!

You should always point the jaw towards the direction you're turning channel locks or adjustable wrenches. This ensures a tight grip and your wrench won't slip. Turning the direction you turn them what cause you to round off bolt heads and gouge material you attempting to turn due to the Jaws loosening as you apply pressure causing them to slip. I thought this was common knowledge. I guess you're not that common
Очень много расходного матеряло жаль

If a valve is not "grinded" properly on its seat then that cylinder will suffer from compression loss-among other things -. So special tools such as the one in the video, are used fix a valve on its seat

Great work on everything but the paint. I want to break my phone in half when i watch u paint.
Gee, the ultrasonic bath worked really well 1st time, NOT! All that old grease & oil would have come off in seconds by placing the parts in a large container using an old paintbrush and choice hundreds of different solvents intended for such work to scrub the goop off !
