Antique Toy Sewing Machine Restoration
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I found this toy sewing machine which is also used as a salesman's model on ebay. It looked pretty rough, but I could tell it would look good after a proper restoration. It jammed up pretty easily when it was covered in rust, but it almost kind of worked a little.
The original paint on this toy sewing machine was beautiful. I really wish I could have kept it, but there was no way it could have been saved.

By popular demand I am currently looking into a way to restore the original artwork to the best of my ability. I'm also looking into replacing or custom fabricating the missing tensioner spring and bobbin nut. STAY TUNED/SUBSCRIBE FOR PART 2! I will get it all finished as soon as I possibly can

I watch Marty's matchbox restorations and he creates decals on a computer. This might be the way you can put on the artwork that was lost. Love this little sewing machine:)

YAY! So pleased you are looking into doing the design. It is absolutely stunning. You will need a very fine paint brush, if you can't get one fine enough, take a razor blade and give a small brush a hair cut! Also, I suggest that you trace off the design onto paper first and have a practice paint. OR, if you know a child who loves to colour in, and stays inside the lines, get them to paint a tracing on paper for you. You may find a budding artist to help you! God bless, and good luck.

Restoration Station. I notice that you have several queries about how a sewing machine can work with only one thread. You may like to direct them to "How it works chain stitch sewing machines." They have an animated illustration that's excellent. I'm sure you also realise you need a small G clamp to secure the machine to the table too. One last word from me. All chain link machines have one oddity. The last stitch you sew is left with an unsecured loop. Any tension put on the thread as you remove it from under the foot, and you will watch all of your sewing unravel before your eyes !!! Solution: Hold onto the stitches as you remove sewing from the machine. Take a sewing needle and pass the thread through the material, catch the unsecured stitch and then knot it to the material. Do the same at the start. I know that you have inspired a number of people to try restoring old, unwanted things themselves. Ever thought of starting a Q&A session to help others? All the best.

Can I buy from you this please
That's not a restoration.....it's a resurrection! Excellent craftsmanship!
If you ever can, please have the paintwork re-done by hand as it was originally, not decals. Many artisans still have the skill. Let them amaze us ❤ It deserves it. Beautiful work 💕

I agree, it would have been easy to trace off the pattern before sand blasting it. Replacing it would have been as easy as colouring in a picture book. You don't need to be an artist, you just need a steady hand. It might be possible to make a template from footage he filmed though.

@@suemiller9842 Totally Sue. To me the paintwork was as important as any other element, if not more so. It had the true history of the object within it... keeping a record is more important than making something shine.🧡

I agree. Lots of people in the comments telling me to make a decal, but I don't think that would look good

If you plan to paint the design onto the machine, you should find that the front and back are mirror images of each other, so where parts of the pattern are missing on one side, you may find them on the other side. The base plate also appeared to have a design on it, but I couldn't see to much of it. you may need to take elements of the side panel design to create a new one. Hope this helps.
Restoration Station: We have found photos of pristine art work for this machine on line. The picture can be printed, and the design traced onto the machine. Then all you need is a steady hand and some acrylic craft paint, and the machine will look like new. We have posted the web site name under Deena's comment. Also note that the cotton tensioner is missing on your machine. It is a spring and a nut, and allows you to tighten the thread so that that it will make a proper chain stitch. As you did not show us the piece of sewing completed, my guess would be that the stitches were not properly looped. Hope you do the painting, let us see pictures if you do. Keep up the good work, can't wait for your next project.

Sue Miller : Well said and helped. I too love it to be as original as possible on its restoration.
This brought back memories, I had one of these as a child. I remember it being on a heavy wooden plinth which gave it some stability. Great job of restoring it.
I had a Singer hand crank chain stitch sewing machine as a child, 1955-1960. My dad C-clamped it to a linoleum kitchen table. I made clothes for dollies and just loved to pull out the chain too.

Beautiful restoration. Old toys are adorable.
OMG I didn't know that the machine actually used thread until the end . BEAUTIFUL;)
Excellent! Thank you for doing and posting this!
Absolutely fantastic job. I have a few of these machines in various states of operation. They are just such works of art
Go to your local craft store. You can find stencils to replace the decorative designs.
That was definitely a sweet little toy to restore and except for the loss of the art work I think it was a total success. Thanks for sharing this video with me and I hope you will put out more soon.
Wow! At first I thought it was a toy! It ’s also for playing. It can be sewn !!
Wow cool sewing machine. Nice tear down and clean up. Beautiful restoration.
Thank you for not showing every single second of derusting. A brief summary is sufficient. Great restoration!
Wooo me he quedado sin palabras, es usted increíble, es un artista
Beautifully done!
It looks just like mother's Singer sewing machine. That's is so cool. You do great work.
Yes yes yes !!! Great job. Thanks for sharing !
melhor restauração que já vi!parabéns!
This never gets old. Bravo
Exelente trabajo!!!!! Felicidades, se ve que le gusta su trabajo.
Wow! That was amazing thank you!
Aw, wanted to see the finished stitch. Exact same principle as the grown machines. Folks respected kids ability back when.

Not quite. Real sewing machines have a second thread under the work piece that is entangled with the thread coming from the top. I don't really know how this one works.
Just just had to add, at the end, that the darn thing will sew. Outstanding job as always!
Wonderful job!!! I truly enjoyed watching you work and how you brought that sweet, little sewing machine back to life. Keep up the good work!!!!
That is so cute, you did a great job!
Это великолепно, вы волшебник. Удачи вам во всех ваших начинаниях.
Thank you for sharing. I love old things. I know sewing machine companies make decals for vintage refurbished machines.
Magnífica restauração. Parabéns!
This is my favorite of your restorations! Nicely done!
I am so glad to have found this video! I just got onenof these and am hoping to get it to work!
Great jon keep up the work
😲😲😲 she's gorgeous!!!!!👏👏👏
Amazing work! Beautiful results!
What an awesome video! I’m so amazed and pleased that you took the time to sew a piece of material with it at the end. it really topped things off wonderfully.
Very nice 👍 restoration. I enjoy seeing old toys come back to life.
Recebi este vídeo, que maravilha, amei a restauração, quantos anos deve ter está relíquia, eu amo costurar 🌷 imagina máquina, parabéns
Beautiful! And just as functional as the day it was made. It's a shame they have to make everything now so complicated, even sewing machines have on board computers now. Bet THEY won't still be working like new in a hundred years, with just a simple straightening, de-rusting, repainting, and reoiling. Great job!
I had such a sewing machine. And she sewed, which is interesting, worked very well.
Excellent job on the restoration... WELL DONE!!! 10/10
Beautiful workmanship!
Работа интересная, но на корпусе можно было оставить рисунок и покрыть его лаком.

Not decals. It deserves paint. Many people can still use a brush 💕
Браво мастеру, золотые руки
If you got photos(or screen grabs from video) of the decoration, then import into photo shop and clean them up and make your own decals. Just a suggestion. Excellent work again as usual. Imagine having to build a hot air balloon or a parachute with that sewing machine, lol

I thought of that too Jonner,, but screen or photo imaging does not always show the artisans work,, so I agree with Deena,, find a pro and let them paint it back on... ; ) I did do this with a COMIC though,, I have spiderman #1 with no cover, and a person made it from photoshop and cad ,, great idea

Beautiful job and it was wonderful to see it sew through leather of all things. Just a detail but you forgot the little red felt disc that you rest the thread on.
