I went to Amazon. What you can't see easily is that there is a carbon filter in the spigot that filters the last bits of stuff. So it is best to use the powder AND the bag to get the cleanest water. And it is a great idea. Definitely going in my camping gear.
@BenChurchill76

Oh, that's why the water came out clear when she poured it from the bag! So, there's a further step, and probably better using this bag than just using a bucket.

The powdered activated carbon ("PAC" for short) in the filter also aids in removal of taste/odor compounds.

Carbon filter also may trap some of the chemical hazards. But she’s pretty unwise to drink straight as it doesn’t get 100% of the pathogens; should still boil it
@FirstLast-gw5mg
10 күн бұрын
@@darthmicrobius Yes, the fact that she could not sense any chlorine worries me. I think that all of the chlorine probably reacted with the gunk and it did not achieve effective disinfection. That water may have been way too dirty for the kit and should have been allowed to settle for a while to remove the worst of it before treatment. I really wish she'd ordered some chlorine test strips to check the chlorine residual level, as I suspect there was none left. I wouldn't have drank it.

We tested this powder for a lab activity in one of my environmental health classes and saw there was still some E. coli remaining in the water.. Although the water looks and smells clear, it can still have pathogens harmful to your health. If you really want to be safe I would recommend putting the water to a rolling boil afterwards to be sure you're killing off the pathogens. (or just drink from tap that has gone through extensive filtration process lol) If you're really resource strapped (ex: stranded in middle of woods) and there's no other option than I would say go for it, but I wouldn't recommend for average person in their home.

theres a microbiologist who did this, and the powder that is used actually kills the bacteria and things. it is a legitimate way to treat water in a situation where you dont have access to clean water.

And she wouldn’t see much. This stuff is used in the third world to safely clean water ❤
The sludge draining into the bucket was so satisfying
I only know that I would build myself 2 separate filter systems to pass the water through one before the kit and one after and vigorously boil the water before drinking it. Basic setup of sphagnum moss, charcoal,sharp sand and small pebbles in a cut off plastic bottle will do the job and a coffee filter paper to finish the process.
Was ready to hear "eat the ducky moss“ as is standard but heard the other word instead. This video seemed a bit different than a lot recent ones but was still enjoyable. Thanks Emmy.
These were actually developed for use in developing countries with limited or no access to potable water and weren't initially available to the general public. I've tried buying the sachets for emergency use but it seems that they're always close to being expired. That and they are only good for 3 years. Excellent system though. I've used them with just a 5 gallon bucket.
We use chalk candles and ceramic pots here in Rwanda. Anything that involves buying sachets wouldn't be useful in countries where supply chains are unreliable. Half the year you probably wouldn’t be able to get the powder. Pots and chalk candles are also very easy to clean. Though it's probably best to take water from the top of the stream rather than dredging the mud. As an experiment, it's fun, but for long-term health, probably go for the cleanest-looking water you can find. Also, when it comes out of a chalk or pot filter, the water is absolutely clear 😊
OM…Goodness! She’s becoming a prepper!
Long before this it was eating the bugs...Emmy is the best. Just the best.
Okay started to agree with the "Hang with Emmy during zombie disaster" movement. Actually saw a piece about the water purifying powder that featured the discovering-chemist. Will you be trying out distillers and mineralisers? With the roadkill one and this it could make for an interesting survivalist series.
I would worry about fertilizer runoff into the canal, and single-cell organisms not affected by the sanitizer. I’d definitely boil the water after purification.

Is really funny that you say this cause this same system is used in parts of Africa where people cannot access clean water, the UN has a partnership with P&G and they distribute the little pouches to this regions Is actually one of the main reasons this technology exists in the first place, cause in Africa setting a bonfire to boil the water is either nearly impossible or really dangerous

There is another video where someone views, before and after samples, under a microscope. It's actually pretty crazy how well it works. I'm curious about the polymers used in the water and effects they may have if consumed too often

The purpose of chlorine is to make boiling unnecessary. However the fact that she could not taste it is a huge red flag in my opinion. Chlorine test strips are super cheap. I would have tested it if it did not smell at all like chlorine.

@@thegirlwitheeyes1232 If my nose did not assure me of the presence of chlorine, would not blindly trust the company, much less Google, to tell me that the pouch contained the right amount of chlorine, that it still had the proper potency, _and_ that I didn't somehow fuck up and use the wrong amount of water. When you add chlorine to water, the chlorine reacts with organic material: rotting leaves, roots, microbes that could make you sick. If there is so much filth in the water that the chlorine is completely used up, the water would _not_ be safe to drink. The fact that some chlorine remains at the end is the guarantee that enough was added. (I would encourage you to google "chlorine demand" and "chlorine residual".) In fact... in my professional opinion, I would not attempt to treat water that was so muddy. Simply letting it settle for a few minutes in that 5 gallon bucket would have removed the worst of the silt. Pre-settling the water and _then_ pouring the clearer water into the bag and treating it with the chemicals would have been much safer in my opinion. It would also help prevent the formation of DBPs, disinfection byproducts, which the EPA is increasingly beginning to regulate (google "epa dbp rule"). Drinking chlorinated dead stuff turns out to not be very healthy. Better than live e-coli, but still not healthy! I'm not going to dox myself to you, but I know a bit about the chemistry involved.
Roadkill, pond water , chickens, MREs ... Emmy's low key prepping.

You make amazing videos & your soothing voice & sweet personality has made you so popular! Go Emmy! Go Emmy! 🎉😊
Another helpful hint: You can buy the powdered chlorine (food-grade calcium hypochlorite) and use non chemical ways to filter the solids for a much safer and environmentally friendly way to filter water. Ferric Sulfate stains, is corrosive and can cause gastrointestinal problems for some. Chlorine, if you wait the 20 additional minutes, is totally safe and likely the best affordable purifier to make safe drinking water. It kills bacteria, viruses etc. and the powdered form is shelf stable (some say indefinitely). The packets you have need to be used in 3 years.
Can we appreciate the fact that Emmy does these things so that we don't have to... unless we really want to even after she's warned us . Go courageous, Emmy 😊 Sometimes it's yummy, sometimes, not so much 🤭

Emmy! I was at my local Walmart today and I noticed they had very cheaply priced (.78) great value candy bars that seemed suspiciously similar to a lot of well known ones. I would love to see a comparison like you did with Trader Joe's!
Ahahah - I had to do this. One of my squadmates in survival school forgot to fill his canteen, which made our instructor so mad he made us all dump ours out and fill them from the swamp, "filtered" through parachute cloth and made sanitary with iodine. Blech.
I'd go with the LifeStraw myself, just a tube you can throw in your pocket or a bag and shlurp up water from puddles, ponds, rivers and canals without having to wait for a disinfectant & flocculant to do its' thing, well worth looking into for comparison... :)
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to boil it before drinking to remove all the bacteria, hope you didn't get sick.
