As a young kid I would go out into the wooded area behind my house and collect leaves and twigs and berries in a red solo cup, get water from the garden hose, mash up the stuff in the cup, and give it to my mother saying "I made you a milkshake!" I remember she would act so happy and say thank you and pretend to drink it, so for a little while I thought I was the best chef ever. Parents are awesome, lol

In the days before Pedialite and sports drinks, my dad, who was a pediatrician, always shared a recipe with his patients' parents for when their children had "the runs" to help them stay hydrated. He'd tell them to boil a quart of water, add a tablespoon of sugar and a teaspoon of salt, and keep it in the refrigerator. I did the same when my children were little, and have given them the recipe for their families. I've also read that the recipe is an inexpensive treatment used in places where cholera is a problem.

This is interesting to me because I actually work as a professional taste tester at a company that manufactures sports drinks, among other things. Actually, it's the division of a major food company, that does all their medical nutrition products. Believe it or not, that's actually a job that you can get. The food scientists use the information they collect from us to help figure out how to change recipes for products. We have to make a list of all the different flavors we taste in a product. Then once they have that list, we go through one by one and assign a number rating to how intense each flavor is. We mainly do gummy vitamins, Boost/Ensure type nutritional drinks, and hydration drinks. Sometimes we do have to taste weird things like baby formula or feeding tube formula.

And I truly think they are bad for you. A lot of them destroy your gut. I would rather have plain old sugar, honey, or fruit sugars. Especially with a sports drinks since electrolytes and sugar for energy is what is needed. The chemical sweetners don't add energy for you to burn. At least with sugar it is quick energy as well as adding to the flavor.

I'm diabetic and experience has taught that the only artificial sweetener without any real aftertaste is sucralose. That being said, sucralose is overpoweringly sweet whenever it's used, like liquid dextrose tablets. You can counter it to a point with acidity, but then your drink tastes like sour gummy candy (with the advertised flavor, but still). Honestly, the best combo I've found for when I'm craving a sweet drink is a soda that is part fruit juice (with the sugar but also acidity that entails), part sucralose, part stevia or acesulfame potassium. It's not sugar free, but it's low enough that one glass won't put me in the rollercoaster version of reality.

Back in the day when I was in marching band, we would mix the end of all of our Gatorade powders into our cooler and called it "swamp water"

Hey Emmy, I like this video. How about a video where you combine and taste the same/similar flavors of the sports drinks left. To see how those taste. Your boys are very clever...

Me and my brothers would visit my grandparents, and they would take us to 7-11 for slurpees, and we would get the biggest cup and fill it with every flavor. We called it 'Swamp Water'.

I only ever grab a yellow Gatorade when I’m sick, and a pedialyte (or a dupe) when I’m hungover.

For me, growing up, the only sports-type drink we had was Lucozade. At the time there was only the original flavour (glucose-y) and orange flavour. I also remember being given it when I was sick, to rehydrate, but I swear some people thought it had true medicinal properties! 😂
