@@UmbraFulgur cool, nobody is forcing you. But if 10 episodes is your cut-off point you're leaving out a loooot of great content. And this one doesn't come close to 100 hours, it's somewhere in the 30-40 range. You could also stop after the third season and leave it at that. It's a nice jumping off point and after it the plot changes dramatically, and the ending is polarizing at best. But again, do what you want

I think a great part of the success of Attack on Titan is because Hajime Isayama is a master at foreshadowing. He would put small clues and hints about future events in such a way that when the twists actually happen, you recall all those tiny details and, suddenly, all makes sense. This is yet another proof that great stories come from individuals, not commitees.

I completely agree and this in large part is what gave me trust early on that I was watching something so much greater than a cheap thrill ride; while some mourned the apparent loss of the simple Man vs Environment story as it developed, Isayama's masterful foreshadowing told us from the beginning that the story would never be so simple, and indeed, would cut to the heart of not simply why a person may fight with another, but why they have any reason to live and to fight to begin with. A story about the nature of conflict itself and the meaning of life underneath that.

The thing that boggles my mind about the storytelling of AoT is how many of its twists are so expertly crafted. Every single one felt so natural and planned. Very unlike a show or movie with a twist that you can tell was just made up on the spot to keep people watching. Those can be entertaining... but AoT you can have your mind blown somehow for the hundredth time and just like all 99 times before that realize they had planned all of this from the very first episode. Honestly, typing this now... I'm not sure how in the world this show managed to have such a meticulously detailed roadmap from the outset without sacrificing something important about the characters like their believability or their personality.

The trick to why anime is good and "hollywood" isn't is that the manga are created by a single person (at most 2 - 1 doing art and 1 doing the story), and anime are 1 to 1 adaptations, they make basically 0 changes to the manga. If you look at something like Game of Thrones, the show was better the closer it followed the books, which was written by a single person. You can't have consistent story-telling if it's a bunch of executives shouting over each other.

@@Jordan-Ramses I believe 98% of anime is cringe or rubbish. I'd never liked any of it, because most of it is all the same. But a tiny amount of it gets away with it and is phenomenal. Attack on Titan is the peak of it all. And despite being anime still manages to be the best thing I've ever watched. My point is that as someone who doesn't like anime, the show is still so good it doesn't even matter it is anime. It transcends being an anime. It doesn't fall for the cringe stereotypes of anime and is fully immersed in itself.

Eren receives character assassination like Daenerys got. Major story themes are completely dropped. Overall turned into generic/one sided final fight where only real thing is ridiculous amount of plot armor and plot convenience rather than any believable or earned actions and plans. Then there is like universe rules are broken time and time again so story can rush into direction it had no way of going. All of which is elevated several times by fact of how good story was prior to it. Even Game of Thrones disaster was somewhat teased by entire second half of series being clearly worse than first half. With AoT meanwhile? While disaster isn't that spectacular, contrast of how suddenly story quality went south is even more apparent. Heck, Game of Thrones was so bad it was at least amusing. AoT is just sad that such a great series got such terrible ending.

“Writers”, nah bro all of this story was done by 1 guy Edit: ok wow so I guess I should elaborate, from my own understanding mostly of all anime is adapted from manga(except for those times when it’s something original) and the anime is an exact copy of the manga, it’s not like other book adaptations where the studio takes parts of it and adapts a similar story(except for the few that do have studio interference) like how marvels civil war movie and book are similar but completely different. Of course there are tv writers whose job is to translate the images into animation. And in most cases the original manga writer doesn’t get to have involvement in the anime. But what makes Hajime Isayama(the creator of aot) unique is that he did have a lot of creative control over the anime since he considers the manga a blueprint and the anime his finished product, because he does make changes from the manga to anime and it ends up for the better. So in this case the creator was the main writer for the whole story, for the manga and anime, and what makes him extra unique is that apparently this is his first ever story that he wrote. Also of course he is the main writer but it’s also possible that he took notes from other writers to help him develop his story better

Monster - this anime made me applaud in the end, it's one o rarest occasions when the story shows what made a great villain a villain towards the culmination and when you see this you just get speechless in shock while feeling the terror you saw and then you perfectly understand that what just happened can truly make any human a Monster. 10 out 10, I'll never forget it (the psychological aspect of the moment is truly hard core, it really can break peoples sanity if happening to someone, without spoiling it, it's on the same level of shock as Berserks Eclipse moment or imagine how would you be if you'd see a person in front of you burning in fire to the death in agony, stuff like that that can crack peoples conscience, that level of shit happened to Johan, but the thing is, unlike other animes, this one manages to show this moment the best way possible, in a way you would truly get it and don't have any doubt about it's veracity)

The thing that got me into anime was the actual incredible amount of effort and passion that go into many of the stories they tell. Even the voice acting thats usually half ass script reading in most countries is treated like and art. When 200 people put 5x the amount of effort on a "cartoon" that studios of 3,000 people on shit movies you can feel it in every frame. Even the cinematography is better and they dont have 80,000 dollar cameras. They have a 200 dollar drawing tablet, a 80 dollar per year software, and whole lot of love/talent

Or the writers have held back some detail they really hoped would be worth the wait only to find it pissed off half the fanbase. The best thing about attack on titan is that all of the questions it makes you ask, all have such interesting logical answers that have been hinted at since the beginning. So many shows with mysteries have so many great questions/mysteries, but the answers almost always flop and disappoint. For attack on titan I never felt like an answer was a disappointment, instead they opened up the world so much more and brought new interesting aspects and themes to the story.

My son insisted this week that he and his 65 year old dad should sit down this weekend, during his visit, and experience together this Anime. Well I was blown away by the story, universe and amazing animation. I got about sceptical around episodes 10 and 11 where it seemed to drag but that soon picked up a couple of episodes later. Well I am hooked. Never been a big anime fan. Watched the "classics" like Akira, Ulysse 31 etc... but this series blows them out of the water with it's adult themes and wondeful character development. Thank you Christopher for insisting. From what I gather we have a long and fantastic road together over the next 80 odd episodes.

AoT is an absolute masterpiece. They did an amazing job with the contrast of beauty and horror in a lot of scenes. For example, being inside a forest with beams of light shining through the canopy while characters you've become fond of are being slaughtered. It really makes scenes like that have a lasting impression. However, of all the aspects of the show that are masterfully done, the way they conveyed conflicting perspectives on the morality of war and humanity was brilliantly done above all else. After finishing it, it felt like a genuine honor to be able to witness such a work of art that was clearly created with immense effort and love.

It's genuinely a modern achievement of a story. Morality is put to the ultimate test, and your conscience is questioned at every turn of the plot and every character revel and choices, to the point you are uncomfortable with the implications of what our beloved characters do, and the triumphs of what the villains do. It blurs all lines of the hero-villain archetypes to tell us a human story of war and compassion.
