Independence Day: Resurgence - May Be The Dumbest Movie Ever Made

Ойын-сауық

The Roland Emmerich sequel to 1996's classic action blockbuster Independence Day, Resurgence takes everything fun about the original and promptly dumps it, replacing it with an incoherent plot, terrible characters, meaningless action and over the top disaster scenes. The result is quite possibly the dumbest movie ever made.

I mean, spiritually you could kinda see "Ender's Game" as a loose sequel to Independence Day, since it opens with a narration that explains that an alien invasion got stopped when a pilot bravely sacrificed himself by ramming his own plane into the mothership making it blow up. There's a twist regarding the heroic pilot in "Ender's Game", but in this sequel to ID4 I could just separate it and give the role to Will Smith's character.

@@DeepEye1994 Holy sh#t your right. I sort of did something similar with the original halo series (halo wars-3). That mass effect was the "real" sequel (just replace "Taurin" with "covenant/elites" and the rest fits perfectly.) While the board game warhammer 40k, is the aftermath of ME3 "destroy" ending. (Which in turn is foreshadowed in the film event horizon.)

But Hollywood is so lazy and creatively disabled, they can't create new things anymore. The funniest thing is these remakes, reboots and decades-later sequels almost never make enough money to justify a sequel. Hell, most of them flop nowadays. Yet, the geniuses who run studios (who are probably the talentless children of powerful execs/producers) still think it's a good idea to make them.

If your alien civilization has the ability to travel between stars and do so in only a matter of years, you by necessity also have the energy needed to fry the Earth's surface, either with a big laser or some kind of relativistic kinetic weapon (in fact, they could literally just dump their garbage in the Earth's direction while flying past it at near light speed and it would have the same effect as setting off all of Earth's nuclear arsenal simultaneously, except without the radioactive fallout). If all the aliens wanted was the Earth's core, there was no reason they had to invade when they could have simply sterilized the Earth from space, then they could just scoop out the core at their leisure without any resistance.

The thing that always killed me about this movie was that the premise of it as presented in the trailers was actually intriguing and made sense. It has taken humanity decades to sort through the wreckage of these massive alien ships that they shot down (makes enough sense to me). And after years of sorting through alien technology and trying to figure out what it all is, they stumble upon an active beacon (makes enough sense to me). Naturally, they call David to investigate given that he brought down the aliens the first time and understands them better than anyone (makes enough sense to me). David analyzes the beacon and discovers that it’s sending an interstellar signal to the alien home world, and they’re about to be invaded again by an even bigger force (makes enough sense to me). That is a cool setup for a sequel. It had a chance to be good. They just horrendously botched the execution of it.

It would in fact pull the whole planet into an egg shape, thus causing earth shattering quakes (as the tectonic plates literally shattered), leveling everything on that side of the planet (except directly under it, but that area certainly wouldn't get off light either). So yes,: One side would immediately turn into a volcanic hell scape with above hurricane winds and ridiculous tsunamis, and the other side would be exposed to [almost] the vacuum of space.... To be fair I remember pretty clearly that the aliens had hijacked into earth's telecommunications in order to learn what was the most important places on earth. In order for their operating system to be able to even understand the telecom of earth's data packets it would need to be compatible with the instruction set. Once that compatibility is in application then it means vulnerabilities exist... The only alternative here is that the aliens used some kind of virtual closed off operating system and I feel like that's not something I would think about if I was them to be honest. We have to remember here that in order to even inject the computer virus they had to enter the mothership, which required using one of the aliens own ships to even pull that off. I could definitely imagine the general talking to a subordinate, "Sir what if we get a virus from interfacing with the xeno scum technology?" "What a stupid question! The only way we could get a virus is if it's applied inside the ship".

Here's my guilty pleasure: volcano (1997) The basic plot is that a volcano erupts in the midst of Los Angeles and the main character Mike Roark, the new director of the office of emergency managment, desperatly tries to migitate the damage as much as possible culminating in an absolutly ludicrous finale that involves doing a precision blasting for a building and blasting a hundred meter long trench into a street to divert the flow of lava within less than an hour. Let's be clear here, the timeline doesn't make much sense if you think about it for more than a couple seconds, the lava pretty much ignores every known law of physics whenever the plot needs it to, you really have to work hard to ignore the stupid subplot about roarkes daughter and especially in 2024 many people are probably also gonna be pissed about the really unsubtle anti-racism subplot but the movie still is just good fun.

In Michelle Rodriguez's case, she actually likes being typecast as tough chicks, and she likes playing female characters who have a very active role in the story. For R. Lee Ermey and Danny Trejo, they keep getting typecast as one thing because it was the occupation they had in real life and they aren't a very versatile actor themselves. October 21, 2020, 11:21pm

@@adamkalb1 That's good for them. I've heard most actors really dislike getting typecast since it hinders a lot of opportunities. But anyway my main point really wasn't if they like it or not it's more about it sometimes really being bad. Like with Jeff here, he just does exactly the same stuff he always does with seemingly no complexity or much thought going into it, just the same mannerisms and character personality each time. This doesn't mean it's always as bad as this thought. Right now I'm watching Curb Your Enthusiasm and Larry David as Larry David is just fantastic, much more complex and interesting a character so even if you've seen him doing the character so many times he still nails it, and it always feels like a character and doesn't feel like the the actor just showed up and was told to just be himself like there's not any meat to his character on its own and Jeff's personality is the only thing when they try to sell the character to us as a audience.

I find the sheer incompetence of this Hollywood era quiet fascinating. It means that completely clueless people achieved high positions of influence, which is in all kind of ways counterintuitive, but here we are... How many talented people lost their chance to create something new, something big. What a shame.
