If you get greatly punished no matter what your response is, does it matter what you say at all? At that point I’d just say nothing at all and leave the ball in his court. For God’s sake he’s just a man, we fall asleep. Get on with it and just give him his punishment assignment instead of torturing him with an interrogation about what happened while he was unconscious so no matter what he says he’ll be wrong

It can happen to anyone when you are exhausted. I fell asleep like this once, along with my platoon, while in my actual unit in the 82nd. When you are laying there for hours, especially on ambushes, and it’s just training, it happens even to NCO’s. We once didn’t initiate an ambush because the entire platoon dozed off, but we had been in ITC (Intensive Training Cycle) and in field for a month straight and were like 72+ hours without sleep doing an ambush. This was 90’s even. We had layered there for about five hours, from 0-dark-30 to stand-to. This kid’s uniform didn’t look dirty enough for at least that though. The main thing, he shouldn’t had lied and should’ve told his DS the truth that he drifted off. The DS might’ve given him a little “reinforcement”, but would’ve understood as I’m sure it’s happened to him before too.

They get in your face, scream and yell and keep up an aura of intimidation but aren't allowed to beat up recruits.

Saw it happen to a buddy and almost happened to me once. His brain never registered the pass of time, he never realized he had fallen asleep. That's why he kept saying he wasn't asleep, in his mind he wasn't lying. It sounds hard to believe that the brain can be fooled in such way but it happens when you're very tired and the environment around you is static and monotonous. Having that said, this guy should have realized that whether he was asleep or not, the DS was not going to change his mind and he should have given him the reason the second time he asked.

The problem is he laid down. If he hadn't laid down, he wouldn't have fallen asleep. When i was in and started feeling tired in a classroom, my ass stood up and went to the back of room and stood there and listened. There were times i got my ass chewed and asked if i was tired. My reply was, i am not tired, but i didnt want to take any chances at falling asleep. Id rather get my ass chewed or smoked for being tired than the smoking i would get for falling asleep.

But as far as I know an unspoken reason is that this causes the whole platoon to punish the dude who messed up (this prevents such an incident from happening again). (basing this on the few videos I've seen from veterans)

I remembered doing sentry duty in the middle of the night and I was so tired after 3 consecutive days of training with little sleep that I unknowingly fell asleep standing up while leaning against a wall. After a short while of closing my eyes, an officer tapped me on my shoulder and I literally got a shock of my life.
