As someone who sweats a lot, it doesn't matter if I'm wearing just a tshirt or more layers. I would still sweat. One good thing about layers is the bottom layers absorb the sweat so you don't look like you've been dunked into the water like if you're only wearing one layer.

I can’t always blame them, since the amount of layers does make it look hot and a few of them are an uninformed public who’ve never watched a Prior Attire video before. But getting that education on how each layer is light and properly paired is really quite fascinating and becomes very useful knowledge to know in this day and age, too.

For all those who can't fathom wearing "so much clothing in the heat": These are all natural (plant) fibres, eg cotton, linen, silk. That means they 'breathe', or that air can pass through the material and your sweat will actually help cool you. None of the clothing is made from synthetic fibres, eg polyester, acetate, nylon, etc. Those will trap your sweat, prevent airflow, and essentially hotbox you in your own clothing. I've dressed in 16th century Ottoman Turkish clothing during the summer before, and it's nearly as many layers (four: dōn, gömlek, zibiin, and kaftan) of mostly silk. And no, I did *not* sweat to death.

I used to hate Second Bustle era, but I am slowly falling in love with it. It makes you look like a tall statuesque woman.

So pretty! I've worn my very lightweight wool and linen chemise at miserably hot renaissance fairs and agree that it can be just as bearable as modern clothing...you're going to be feeling it in 90 degree heat no matter what, but covering up helps a lot.

The unintentional best thing about this video for me is the matter of fact demonstration of the fact that you CAN put shoes on after a corset. 😁 It's one of those historical costuming memes that get on my nerves after a while since I can put on my shoes in Regency stays, with a rigid wooden busk, so every time someone brings it up it's like... oh, really? ETA: This heat fries my brain, seriously. I intended to say, first and foremost, that the late bustle era is my favourite part of the bustle era (not actually my era) and the seaside dresses are one of my favourite aspects of it so this was a delight!

I LOVE how she just plops down on the bed after putting the bustle on. puts to bed the silly idea that you cant sit in one, doesnt it :) - AND she proves yet again how easily one can move & maneuver IN a corset. she put her shoes on AFTER it. -- tho i must say i think the all in one skirt seems to be much more difficult than layers.

It's interesting to know what is considered a heatwave in different parts of the world. 30 degrees Celsius is a relatively normal summer day here in Wisconsin. I do say this light blue looks fetching on you. I love it when you do outfits in this blue or a light blue and white stripe.

True- our heatwave ended up being a record one with temperatures in low 40s- but even 30s are difficult to withstand in the Uk where our houses have been built in view of keeping the cold out and heat in and air on us rare- just not needed usually

Most houses here in Wisconsin that do not have air conditioning are made to retain heat for our blistering cold winters and also keep the hot, humid days of summer from penetrating into the house. Brick is often seen. Those not made in brick really do suffer in summer. I'm quite privileged to have air conditioning; we did have to buy a new unit last year and the weeks we waited were during an unprecedented heat wave and we all pretty much went to the grocery just to luxuriate in the ice cream aisle! XD It was so hot.

The difference in humidity makes the heat very different. 30 in dry humidity is harder to deal with then 40 in high humidity

I love the side buttons on the bodice. Really frames the shape of the waist. And I’m a big fan of the gentle pastel shades of the outfit in general!

I guess the ‘80’s were all about big in both the 19th and 20th centuries…1880’s big butts, 1980’s big hair. Come to think of it the 1780’s were still into big hips (at least at court)…hmmm- 1680’s? They did sort of have a thing for very low necklines… Thanks for GRWM and taking us along to the shore!

The dress is beautiful, perfect for the seaside. I cannot imagine the amount of washing they must have done each week by hand. And they certainly were clever in sewing. What an achievement to make that outfit. How lucky we are today. I do wish they’d bring back parasols. So practical and beautiful to use in this hot summer. Wonderful assistant by the way.

I saw someone using a parasol just the other day... dressed modern, but had one. Not a bad idea at all. Re clothes, outer clothes usually weren't washed, because they couldn't be unless they were cotton. They were usually just brushed down... so they did rather smell after awhile. The cast of Downton Abbey, who wore many real vintage garments from the era whenever possible, even said that they stunk. Undergarments were washed regularly though.

It's very common in Asian countries and Asian neighbourhoods in large US cities; I've purchased parasols at secondhand shops in MA, and in Sunset Park (Brooklyn).

I studied architecture and one time I had a task to draw Brighton promenade. I liked it very much, because of all that lacy details. I remember dreaming that I was such a victorian lady walking around there like you are in the video:) lovely!

funny enough - when i lived in the middle east, they would serve us tea (chai tea) boiling hot in the middle of the day (just before noon prayer) very sweet. but you felt cooler after drinking it.. strangest thing.. try it sometime & see if works for you too!. i drink hot tea all summer here in the desert

Hi Isabel, my great grandfather lived in Yorkshire England in the late 1800’s by the sea in a small parish called Mappleton. Next door to All Saints. I imagine that this is what my great grandmother would have worn. They were upper class for sure.

It does take a while (and some help) to get dressed, but the end result is stunning.

30 degrees Celsius! That's what it is here in Canada's London today! Thank you for another lovely Bustle Era piece and for reminding us that baleen would inevitably have been a lot lighter than steel; the past is a mystery for so many of us in so many ways.... Also, I'm almost certain I've seen the 1887 *fashion plate* you're embodying for us today!

I was told by my grand aunt, ladies during the hot part of the day stayed in, wore petticoats and a very light cotton robe affair. She grew up on Tenn in the large southern house withwide shady porches all around. One section of top floor porch had lattice around back so ladies could go out there.

Stay safe! It's about 95 F in the eastern US (35 C) here today but we are used to it and have air conditioning. We certainly limit how much time we are outside. I was at a friend's house yesterday at about 6 PM and we were in the driveway talking with a guy working on her house for about 10 minutes. I worried my sandals would melt into the asphalt. My shoes stuck to the sealing on my wooden deck this afternoon. It's just too hot.

I live in Florida and it was 92°F (33°C) here. I wonder what it's like to wear natural cotton fabric, I hear that's the reason people back in the olden days could stand the heat. I still feel hot wearing a t-shirt sometimes, I can't imagine how horrible I'd feel in clothes that cover the whole body in modern synthetic fabrics.

@@bitch8205 cotton or linen makes a huge difference. The long layers also help you regulate your temperature. Long synthetic layers would be horrendous!

@@bitch8205 it simply wasn't as hot back then as well. There was a minor ice age during the Victorian era if I'm not mistaken. My house is 86°F in NM, send help (or a bed made of ice cream lol)

The dress captures the seaside atmosphere so well. Love the sunglasses!

I never considered using buckles for my elastic garters, great idea (I just machine-stitched them closed, then sewed an embroidered appliqué over the seam). I’ve made three pairs now because it seems line I can never find a complete pair when I need them. I suppose I’m strange, but I love wearing silk stockings with garters under my modern everyday dresses, it’s so much more comfy than tights.

I always wear silk undies and petticoats, too, or “half-slips” as we call them in the US, our “full slips” have a bodice as well as petticoat skirt. Hardly anyone wears either nowadays, spandex shape-wear has replaced them, but I don’t like that, it’s too hot and tight. Silk slips are so hard to find nowadays, I treasure my old ones and might have to start making my own.

@@kimberlyperrotis8962 I only wear thigh highs too and wear silk half slips. It is easy to find slips, especially online. I like thicker sweater thigh highs for the middle of winter, and they do not have them usually, so I cut the legs off the tights and make them into thigh highs. They have elastic garters that go around the legs both online and usually at the local "adult" store, so that is where I get mine. I used to make my own that tied, but the already bought, elastic ones held better overall I found. Thigh highs that are thinner or opaque are easier to find and I love how those have the silicone built in garters. They are comfortable and hold very nicely. I never wear pants, they are so uncomfortable with an hourglass shape! I only wear dresses and skirts, usually knee length or a smidge longer.

I love this channel and I love watching all your videos. I will say I would happily trade your heatwave for mine haha! It is 40.5 Celsius or 105 Fahrenheit where I am lol!!! Beautiful, beautiful dress!

Mixed emotions here. -Lovely colors, overall appearance and another hat I would so love to wear. -Is this when -does this dress make my bum look big- and yes, was a good thing? I absolutely love how you make what are quite outlandish ensembles (in this day and age) look elegant, perfectly reasonable and quite wearable. 😎

I see now why you really cannot hit a plateau in your costume making. You're doing several centuries! Even just doing Victorian would require a lifetime to get all the eras perfect. But I do think you've probably hit a sweet spot with your sewing skills. I don't think you will look at your latest work in ten years and be ashamed. Not at all! I love the seagull cries in this one. The difference in humidity makes the heat feel really different. A lower heat with low humidity feels fast alot hotter then higher humidity and higher temperature.

am in the palm springs area. our temps are higher but man, we dont have your humidity. tried summer in so carolina & the humidity made me sick.. was too bad cause it was so pretty there

Yep! Crinoline type things are even better because they actively swing and basically act like a giant fan.

Those seaside pictures of you in your beautiful gown reminded me of some seaside paintings done in the 1880's. Lovely color and design! I can't imagine myself wearing something like that in the summer. Maybe summers were a whole lot cooler back then.

Sometime i got the impression that we are afraid of shoing the female body in natural situations today, especialy i think children should know that everybody looks exactly like they do and there is nothing weird or strange with the human body.

I WISH it was 86°F here, it's been 95°F- 99°F here in Mississippi, unless there is a thunderstorm, which looks like is fixing to happen, lol! If you don't want A/C, may I suggest an attic fan? They're wonderful for keeping the house cool without A/C.

AC is very uncommon and as a result quite expensive in the UK. Couple this with the European climate being generally colder, our homes are typically built to retain heat and as a result, it would be bloody lovely for AC installation to become a norm here.
