Getting Dressed in 1892 - a Victorian Winter Walking Ensemble
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Join me as I get dressed in a winter walking ensemble created from mostly hand knit items from an 1892 Victorian pattern book!
It has taken me nearly a year to finish all of the pieces for this ensemble and I hand knit and machine sewed:
Combinations
Stockings
Corset lace trim & floss
Wool underskirt
Bustle pad
Petticoat
Corset cover
Chemisette
Skirt
Jacket
Cape
Fascinator
Miser's Purse
Mittens

I'm a 64-year-old man and, surprisingly, I found this video both entertaining and informative. And you say that you sewed and knitted all those pieces by hand?! Incredible!
Edit: Hello and welcome everyone coming from Karolina's post - thank you for stopping by and I hope you enjoy! 😊I'm overwhelmed by the lovely response, thank you so much! I can finally wear my entire outfit all together! What do you all think? A few notes: - Lace-up shoes were available in the 1890s, and are likely also very popular, but I did find many examples of buttoned shoes as well! - I meant to say that 1890s corsets were split-busk! My corset has a busk, it just doesn't open at the front like most would have in 1890! (and I'm sure I made so many more mistakes - this is my first ever historical costume and I've learned so much already!!)

I’m just so glad you found a project you could work so hard and do so much research on! Karolina Żebrowska recommended this video to me, and I hope more and more people come see this video, because it’s so respectable to see someone make a historical garment (and for the first time!) like this. I hope you keep doing this in the future, I love seeing this stuff.

Yes, Karolina Żebrowska just posted the link. Hopefully many more of us will watch, comment, like & subscribe to show appreciation for your hours and hours of hard work. Is there a link for paterns in the description? I am interested making woolen ruffles, like your fascinator has.
Lovely! I imagine there were a couple of ladies who loved knitting as much as you do, and would have worn this many knit layers! They probably weren't common, as you mentioned, but they had to exist! :)
Karolina was desperately searching for something to protect her ears. You show the answer. 🙏😍😅
Directed here by Karolina. Beautiful work. Subscribed. I've been trying a mesh patterned 1940s vest. Pretty stitch of twisted rib on knit row and larger needle on purl. Lost at least 10 stitches over 10"/25cm of back piece pattern. The rib lines kept moving too. Turned it into a hot water bottle cover instead. Lol. That's why knitted stockings and combinations impress me. Lace I have to crochet to get right.
And thus the saga is complete. It looks amazing! I am so proud of you, and I can’t wait to see what you do next!

This is a super pretty and impressive outfit! Ngl, I came here from Karolina's channel, but I'm super glad I found you! All the knitting is insane and beautiful!

1 year to sew/knit for 1 person only! How did women manage it, when they had an entire growing family to sew/knit for? No wonder people had only few garments, rather than today's FAST FASHION! I'm 68 and a sewer, the few garments I've managed to sew for myself, I love more than anything I buy! In fact I buy very few clothes..Knitting, crocheting are my upcoming hobby too! Mum sewed all our garmenst (4 of us in the 1960's)
Is it weird I’m getting emotional over this?

You just need good aim, or a funnel (probably a silicone one online somewhere ). Plus, perhaps some awesome personal wipes, for extra hygiene.
Wow! Wear that with pride! What a lot of work. Its looks great!
it looks so wonderful, you have inspired me to do historical knitting. wear that everyday for winter lml

Thank you, and it is so wonderful that you're inspired to do some historical knitting !
I bet you would be as snug as a bug in a rug in that outfit on a cold winter day 😀 I’ve really enjoyed watching this series.
Amazing you finished it
It's amazing to see this outfit complete! I love the little detail of saving the buttons from an old dress. I can't wait to see what you make next. 😊🌻
I love that even though you don't have all the perfect things you make it work (like historical women would've)
I've been watching your videos for weeks now, originally looking for some knitting ideas and very quickly falling in love with vintage knitting. This is the first time I've watched you wear this whole ensemble, after seeing you slowly piece it together in previous videos. I know this about 2 years late but WOW it's so exciting to watch the final results of all your hard work. Mad respect!!
I appreciate the craftsmanship on display here
Wooow, I study History at University and I specialize on 1890-1939 and this is so inspiring! 😍 Thank you for your hard work!
A thoroughly interesting walk back in time. Thank you so much!
I am so intimidated by knitting anything at all and here you are with all this gorgeous inspiration! I am now considering giving it a try!
It's very interesting as I can imagine my great grandmother getting dressed up in something like this.
I find this info helpful for my family's lifestyle. We duplicate some of these things to stay warm on our hobby farm.
Wonderful wonderful job!!

Amazing work. It's gorgeous. I can't imagine how long women took to get ready in past with so many layers. 😅
😊💛💛xxx many thanks. Lovely!
No wonder the gentry had 'dressers' . Imagine having to do that yourself every day, especially tying things at the back. Lovely video
wow wow wow this is amazing. And such fine knitting. I just can't imaging having to have so many layers in those days. Incredible. your sewing and knitting are fantastic, congratulations.
This is great! And a fantastic job for a beginner! I've been sewing 50 years and I don't know if I could have the patience. I have a real problem with start-itis. I binge watched this playlist last night. Love the videos!
What a dream come true! Your ensemble is beautiful. I hope you wear it often. It's been great to follow along with you as your built this gorgeous outfit! I can't wait to see what's next! I am currently knitting a Spencer from 1919 and I look forward to a bit chiller days to wear it... but not yet. I do love the summer!

Honestly this just makes me appreciate the fabric, clothing, mending, and construction so much more. Watching you make these items just made me see clothing in a different light.
This...is a MASTERPIECE! What a beautiful work of art. 👏Bravo 👏

@@catherinejustcatherine1778 Hi, You are a tease aren't you😊. Spring indeed... It's still very cold, even though I saw the first insect this year a couple of weeks ago. A butterfly, but it couldn't have survived the thirty degree night. It's still Winter here in the north. North as in Scandinavia, Europe, north. Even though you are indeed a tease😉😊 enjoy your spring/summer, I hope it's a lovely one. Yours, Ann

@@annlidslot8212 I was acknowledging that different locations have radically different weather. Our "spring" is extra hot this year, trying to be summer already. I try to hide in the shade, grateful that it isn't also humid, or snowing instead. Still, new plants dehydrate so quickly that I really should consider a "watering" system. I hope that your winter is not too uncomfortable
Wow it’s beautiful on you. Thank you! I’ve never seen this style before. Nice history fashion lesson as well. 😊
Amazing work! I’ve been watching the other videos and it’s so exciting to see it all come together!
Great job, and just in time for the coming cold weather. Its been fun seeing this go together.
The level of your skill is astounding. Thanks for a charming video!
Yaaaay good for you! What an incredible project to have fully realised, it's SO impressive. I hope you are very proud of yourself - each piece is beautiful. Congratulations!
Everything is absolutely beautiful! I really want to try to knit some of the accessories you made, like the fascinator and cape
Obviously one did not just throw something on and run out of the door! A stunning ensemble. A late 1800’s soirée Party is beckoning, 🎻
I would love to see other season versions of this.

It all looks wonderful together! You should be very proud of yourself, especially since it includes some of your first sewn garments. I am looking forward to your future projects. Well done! 😊
Stunning work...Thank you so much for sharing the history of the garments and your excellent work. I feel as though I have stepped back in time.
Congratulations! the result is beautiful and one can tell how much time, care and love you've put into each piece. It is trully a remarkable work!

Well i love every piece you ve made. I sure hope you so tutorials on how to knit the pieces? I hope. Lovely. Lovely outfit. I'm new to sewing too. 😍🙋🙋🙋
This looks amazing!! Although, where I live, -30c during the winter isn't too uncommon, and this would've been WAY too light for said weather. Obviously, though, northern winter clothes have always been different, and I see this fabulous outfit being for a noble lady, and not a commoner, I assume!
Lovely!

The lace trim is so fun to make! I still can't believe I did the combinations either, but they are very soft!
You did such a beautiful job! The pieces all look wonderful! You could probably actually wear the blue ensemble in summer if you just change the undergarments and accessories for summer ones, since wool is not only good for keeping you warm, but lightweight wool was used to keep you nice and cool in hot weather too. (The weight of the blue fabric looked quite light to me, but it's hard to tell on camera)
It’s funny, the other thing to think about is that without central heating, the difference between outside and inside temperatures would have been less, so people wouldn’t not easily overheat if they went inside to call!
From reading through memoirs and reference books, hand knit undergarments were actually quite common. It was rare for a woman to be the only woman in the house, so she had sisters and daughters to help with large knitting projects, and even some boys were enlisted on rainy days. Some people would also take old hats, scarves, and gloves and weave them into these large garments to save on knitting time.
