Drawabox Kinda Sucked

When I started Draw A Box for the first time, I was aiming to take my drawing skills to the next level by learning about perspective, construction and form. However, going through it kinda sucked. In this video, I discuss my initial negative experience with the Draw A Box program and how I intend to approach it once again.

what helped me is the 50% rule from lesson 0. The box grinding was brutal, but i broke it up into 10-15 boxes a day for however many days. I would then draw whatever i wanted to. It breaks up the monotony so you can work on stuff you like. I just finished the box challenge and it sucked ass, but it definitely helped my abilities. another great resource i used was the free videos on CTRL+PAINT. The first few sections can be done traditionally, but it also delves into working with a digital medium. I will eventually go digital when i can get a tablet, and Ctrl+ paint seems like a great resource for that transition.

Lmao same thing happened to me before. It's some pretty dense shit that can be a lot to take in at once. I've found a lot more success this time around by skim reading (pretty much looking at the pictures and bold stuff) and trying out the exercise to get a basic idea of the lesson. Once that basic idea is formed, I just focus on each section and try to understand/improve upon that idea using the exercise. The progression has been a lot more noticeable and I find it gives enough time to really let the information soak in. Good luck mane!

Yeah it’s not been going well for me. It’s like a year and so far I’ve only reached lesson 2 while others finished it in less that 6 months. I tried to do a page each day but with school work and life getting in the way it was a challenge. Plus the boredom felt when doing the same thing over and over again without getting to try something different for once to change it up is spirit crushing. I get what uncomfortable meant by this course was going to be tough

i think Drawabox promotes obsessive behaviors that are really, really draining on the mind. it is also contradictory to his message of drawing more spontaneously. i gave up the first time because i just found it extremely demoralizing and soul-crushing as doing the same basic thing [drawing a straight line 600 times] in probably the most expressive thing on Earth [art]. line drawing and drawing good ellipses is an autonomous skill -- muscle memory -- that i think you learn naturally as you actually *draw* things. idk about the rest. maybe it gets better... i like the _concept_ of it

@@InnermanArts How is your progress? i am vaguely recanting my statement in respect to his [Uncomfortable's] guides on general perspective. i am actually finding those extremely useful atm. but ya the draw 600 straight line 1000 ellipse exercise is just totally asinine and counter-productive imo. one thing i have learned about learning new skills - you need to actually apply the things you learn to something you care about. and drawing a cube 300 times is not going to help me learn. but, maybe drawing a bunch of small doodles with boxes _will_ . i don't want to be presumptuous and state his entire course is bogus

Traditional art forces you to get everything right I love digital art if I had a drawing tablet I would use it but I'm so happy I learned how to draw and paint without it because artists who exclusively draw on digitally and haven't learned how to draw traditionally get too used to things like being able to back up a step or have layers or put a square around an eye so you can move it a little bit.

I wish you the best of luck with your Drawabox journey. I followed your account a while back and was genuinely hopeful that this was going to be a critique of some of the things I saw wrong with Drawabox, unfortunately not. So I did want to say, Drawabox is not for everyone. Despite what Uncomfortable would say otherwise. People learn differently and I think the BIGGEST group that Drawabox is not the best for is neuroatypical folks, especially those with ADD/ADHD. It's just not our learning style and that's fine. I will say, perhaps I'll give it a try again based on you trying it again... but I am also aware it's not the end all and be-all for an art journey. cause when I asked some of my artist friends, people who are pulling in living wages on patreon... "Naw I never used drawabox lol" was their responses. Glad to see you back posting!

I have been thinking about doing Drawabox, but I don't know. It's not the tedious work. I am up for that. It's the having to draw only with ink when I want to work with graphite. It's the 50/50 rule that seems so unnecessary. I want to spend 90-95% of my time working on the fundamentals, but he wants you to draw other things not as a choice but as a requirement. And then, if you pay for his critique, he doesn't want you to do more than is necessary (otherwise practice more which I want to do on each lesson), and you aren't allowed to move on to anything else until you get your critique back. All of that is turning me off to Drawabox. I am still in the thinking about it phase. I don't know if I am gonna do it.
