Why!? Draw a Box 250 Cylinder Challenge Completed

I am done with the Draw a Box 250 Cylinder Challenge. Just one question remains ... Why!?
Here are my thoughts around Draw a Box 250 Cylinder Challenge and why you should do it even if you don't know why.

Nice review. I'm with you, get away from "it is worth it" is important otherwise nothing is really worth it in life, if you think about it... Just do it and one day the magic will happen 😉

Just do it and one day the manic will happen I like that. I think that has been my approach to learning. You don’t get to choose when you make progress. Your job is just to show up and scribble on the paper. Love it!

Ya. I’ve been practicing making perspective grids and making boxes inside. Then make buildings, people, tables, scenes. Put in a light source and make shadows. I think it all helps. Like u said, practice

Yip I agree Tritun. Consistent practice over time .. which is really hard 😀 … because so much of that time you don’t see any progress. But that’s why the end product is fulfilling. That’s for the comment.

I think getting the basic shapes down as good as possible (no such thing as perfect) is key to all art. So taking 3 months on cylinders is totally worth it. Especially since for 100 or so you also got to apply your box challenge inside of your cylinder challenge.

Yeah I think draw a box did a lot for me in improving my line confidence as well. I definitely do not regret spending my time in this course.

250 seems over kill, I would say 100 and then just drawing 2 cylinders each day as a warm up makes more sense. you have to draw cylinders in construction phase anyway. very cool review. I finished the box challenge in 1 month and it was heavy.

When doing the lessons did you submit your pages for review via the community or through the paid review program that they have? And if you didn't how did you have the confidence to understand when you had understood something? Also, in the beginning of your journey you had done this and the proko figure drawing fundamentals course, which of the two would you say helped you out the most when you were starting out and still greatly helps you to this day?

Great questions. I submitted for community review. Had to do over an entire lesson early on because I did it wrong. So yeah I thinks submitting is great. I would say both helped. They focused on different things so it’s hard to say which helped more. But the Proko reviewers really helped me to chill out and relax when I started. In the beginning I was so frustrated. Probably would have quit. But they helped fix my mindset. So I guess that was really important and helpful. ☺️ but draw a box really helping me now with perspective work. It’s tough to choose.

@@canilearntodraw2579 Thanks for the reply. How long did it usually take to get critique for both programs and did you do the paid critique for drawabox?

  • @canilearntodraw2579

I did not do a paid critique for draw a box. So that one varied in time. Some of the earliest ones were rather quick. And then could take several days. For proko it was normally a day or two during the week. A bit longer on weekends.

Hey Sad Idiot, so sorry to hear that you injured yourself 😕. Hope you get better soon. I actually haven’t finished draw a box as yet 😔. But I may have some additional thoughts about that coming up. But the lessons can take quite some time as you get to the later levels. I’m sure some of them took me almost 2 months to complete. But that can very depending on how cautious you are and how much time you have. Get well soon!

Heya … I’m not sure … I talked about what happened in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/mnxlx7GigcTAqps.html. It took a turn to more technical drawing with rulers and curve and oval guides … maybe I was just burnt out … but it was going in a direction that I wasn’t interested in. And the course takes a lot of time. Just doing this in my free time I didn’t know if I had the time to commit to it when it seemed to be heading away from what I wanted. I have still left the door open on it because it was just so useful for all the other lessons I took.

I wish there was some sort of general overview of Draw a Box. The videos by Uncomfortable as so, so, SO wordy and the entire program is mystifyingly complex. It'd almost be better as a book....or at least a bit less difficult to follow. Just my experience though. Thanks for the video.

I play his videos at 1.5x because he’s too verbose. There is no need for him to over explain the content. We have the capability of rewinding the video!!

Yeah I played the videos at a higher speed. I also read the lesson that came with the videos ☺️ … so a bit of over kill. The early lessons seemed more complex reading and listening to the instructions but got better as you did them. The last too exercises get really technical. And I decided those were not for me at the current time.

@@hobogardenerben I finished lesson 5 and I am doing the 250 cylinder challenge at the moment with the first 150 cylinders complete. I can tell you that the DrawABox guy is pretty wordy. I appreciate what the DrawABox guy is doing, but sometimes he takes 20 words to say what takes 5 words and still communicate the same thought. So the @dpelpal's criticism is valid. I read textbooks whenever I want to learn something new so I am not lazy when it comes to learning new things and don't mind reading technical books (including math). This does not take away from DrawABox, but yeah he uses "passive voice" too often in his articles.

@@hobogardenerben Gotcha. Good luck. I understand it is not for everyone. I am already pretty used to grinding things out so although it got boring sometimes, I was able to stick it out. One thing I did was listen to an interesting podcast or videos while I did the 250 box challenge and it went by faster.
