Dragons Dogma 2 Post-Launch Autopsy

Ойындар

Dragon's Dogma 2 launched with a metric ton of meaningless microtransactions and performance issues that are already and will continue to hold back whats actually a really fun game underneath all the sludge Capcom has it hidden behind. This video is to serve as both a post launch autopsy for Capcoms lack of decision making and obsession with skipping the time tested delayed gratification strategy of releasing a game known as "not f*cking over your consumers" and "releasing a working, well optimized game". I yell at Capcom executives and braindead reactionary gamer dweebs a lot in this one, sorry in advance.

I will say 'some' of the reviewers did get a package that showed what microtransactions were going to be in the game, but the fact that they are just like the other capcom games MTX, most of them shrugged it off as it's pay for convenience in a single player game which capcom has been doing in all of their single player games. What's funny is that DD2 is getting the flak of alongside it's other issues. I mean Resident evil 4 has way worse MTX, yet it's overwhelmingly positive on steam. Some people just can't be reasoned with.

I think the performance is the biggest issue and the microtransactions are just getting as much flak as they are becuase the game runs like such shit, kinda like a “how dare they ALSO have that when they cant even get it to run well” resi 4 still drives me crazy lol, it should have zero dlc besides separate ways yet it has 200 costumes and other bullshit

@@Anarchyttg Resident evil had 26k reviews on steam in it's first week, at a 99% positive rating, compared to the 34k for dragon's dogma 2 in it's first week. So i'd say they are quite comparable in launches. Again, a game from the same developer/publisher with more egregious MTX is lauded by the players, yet one with pretty minor gameplay benefits is getting hammered for it's MTX.

honestly so sad when such a great game gets mired by upper management echo chambers pushing to cut corners, pointless microtransactions, and bad optimization issues. :( will be purchasing on a sale most likely, i can always play DD1 while waiting.

dd1 has some weird gameplay choices still but honestly holds up remarkably well, if you arent REAAAALLY jonesin for DD2 i think waiting not only for a sale but for the game to actually run in cities is the best option for reference i have a 3070 and 10700k and saw from 60-20 fps in cities depending on which way the wind blew lol

im a little worried that they barely addressed the whole thing with performance issues and instead talked about the possibility of restarting and how you can farm the microtransactions(the metamorphosis book change is nice though)

from what we know about the performance issues it seems like its definitely not a weekend fix, if i had to bet id say theyre avoiding saying anything about it or making any promises because they dont know when itll be fixed sadly :/

As a fellow DRG player, I commend you for you bringing up Deep Rock Galactic as a prime way of doing mtx/dlc that isnt predatory. I'm also aware of other games that have good/decent monetization models to follow (Guild Wars, Warframe, Path of Exile) I would also add that the reason no one makes a big deal of the dlc in these types of games is the fact that they have EARNED the right to monetize by delivering solid gaming experiences at reasonable or in some cases no cost. I cannot say the same for Dragon's Dogma 2.

1:23 That's not actually true, at least for most reviewers, they were given supplementary informations alongside the game (in an email IIRC) which did list the microtransactions. Apparently many didn't read that, but some did and thought it wasn't worth mentioning, which IMO is BS. Regarding performance, I don't buy the excuse of the super computer, if a reviewer as the money for that kind of PC, they probably have access to some middle of the road computer too. Many reviewers test game on multiple machines (e.g. Skill Up), it's not hard to boot the game on another PC and try a few areas/activities to see how it runs. Obviously, they didn't forget out of maliciousness, but if a reviewer doesn't even think of checking the performances of AAA, when we all know 90% of them release broken, I wouldn't take their review seriously. And while I'm all for shiting on Capcom since they almost certainly were the one pushing for microtransactions, they aren't the one to blame for everything. For example the idea of limiting player to 1 character likely was from the studio. Similarly, I find it a bit too easy to just put all the blame on Capcom for the bad performance, publisher can't just give unlimited money and time, and even when they do (like Microsoft did for some of their games) it doesn't necessarily leads to better games. Deadline and budget are necessary, and we don't know whether Capcom was unreasonable or the team did a bad job/didn't managed their time efficiently. However, one thing Capcom definitely deserves to be blame for and that you didn't mention is the DRM, Denuvo is a purge as always, and they will likely replace it with the even worse Enigma later down the line when they don't want to keep paying Denuvo's subscription, which is one more reason to not buy that game until a few years down the line.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond to this, I didn’t wanna just skim it and actually read it, but I will say it feels like you have kinda unrealistic expectations in a couple areas? I dont know the exact timeline but the reviewers didnt have months to get through the game and prep reviews, the earliest I saw someone mention having a copy was IronPineapple like 2-3 days before the embargo drops and tbh even with a full week my priority if I was in their position would be finishing the game and then writing/editing my video, not installing the game on a secondary computer to test performance on midrange systems. I appreciate that Skillup and ACG do that stuff but its unrealistic to expect it with the time they had. Not to mention the Denuvo thing only allows X amount of activations and the last thing youd want is getting Denuvo blocked for trying to test performance lol, some things arent worth the risk. For the record I hate denuvo and all anti piracy measures, they dont work and just slow down performance in games for fuckall reason Regarding the mtx, even if they did get briefed on it, again if I was reviewing it I would have at least mentioned it but they didn’t have access to any of the MTX options to purchase for themselves during the review period and if they never hit a point in the game where they felt like “ah this is where I would wanna buy more of X” then… why bring up in the review, ya know? DD2 is absolutely the wrong place to have these monetization practices and there isnt really a place they belong in this form but I’d be lying if I said I didnt use the outrage over that in this video as a springboard to talk about the bigger picture. Its actually pretty harmless in DD2 but it shouldnt exist period because its teeing up much worse and more intrusive versions of MTX down the line As far as the character slot stuff I honestly just have a hard time believing that kinda thing isnt the product of a release rushed to hit a deadline. I know they cant give unlimited time and money but Capcom is *absurdly* wealthy and they can damn well afford to push release. We didnt hear any rumblings of a release date push and the marketing started early, smells more like hitting a deadline than poor time management by the devs to me. I appreciate your perspective and comment, even if I do disagree mostly

@@NotAbsolutelySure Don't worry about the delay, everyone got a life beside YT, plus comments are 90% screaming into the void anyway XD. Regarding the time for reviews, I assumed it was long enough since usually reviewers usually mention it when they got the codes late and of the 3 reviews I watch none mention it. Although, even with that delay, I still think it's a pretty fast thing to test, probably less than 1 hour. That said, I hadn't thought of Denuvo, that a great point, you definitely wouldn't want to get blocked when there's only 3 days. "Its actually pretty harmless in DD2 but it shouldnt exist period because its teeing up much worse and more intrusive versions of MTX down the line" To me, that why I think MTX in single-player games should always be mentioned in reviews and get as much of a blowback as possible, not for the impact it has on the game itself, like you said here it's pretty small, but for the impact it has on the industry. The big video game companies are "boiling a frog", slowly adding MTXs to the industry, making sure it's always just small enough that people begrudgingly accept them, and quickly backing away when it gets too hot, but they will go back to heating the water as soon as we let our guard down. Regarding the number of characters slot, it's apparently an artistic choice, there are a few articles where the director explain it (e.g. "Dragon's Dogma 2 Director Explains Why There's Only One Save File" by The Gamer). Capcom definitely bears a big part of the blame for those shoddy performances. That said, at the same time the issue does seem to stem from some fairly deep part of the project (apparently it's a CPU bottleneck when there are too many entities), the kind of thing that should have been dealt with at the beginning not once the whole game is built on top, so I'm not sure a delay would have done much, unless they push it back quite far. Well, we will see soon enough, if they can quickly resolve the issue, then I was wrong and Capcom does deserve almost all the blame, otherwise I think the dev do deserve a significant part of it. "I appreciate your perspective and comment, even if I do disagree mostly" Same here, it's always interesting.

Ha ha ha 😂 Great video and enjoyed it all the way through. I'm still laughing at the end clip. Its really sad how the business bros are trying to wring out all the money milk from the industry without realizing why people spend money on games. Stop fucking up shit that works ton wring that towel even tighter. It turns people off from all games and then they say the consumer isn't sophisticated enough to pay a $1 per bullet. It's happening too often. Support indies y'all. 🎉❤
