Animal Well, Dunkey & the "Indie" Problem

Ойындар

I've been a Dunkey viewer since more or less the beginning, and thanks to a youtube comment I saw on a review for Animal Well I felt obligated to make this video. I've been going hard at KZread for a little over a year and a half now and while I've had my ups and downs I'm mostly proud of what I've been doing and how I grew to the size I am now from quite literally zero subs. Its kinda amazing I've gotten this far, especially considering that I mostly cover indie games, which is what I'm passionate about. That focus of this channel though, and seeing firsthand what its like for other creators that AREN'T Dunkey when trying to cover indie games, I feel, gives me a good view of the field to talk about why some of the backlash Bigmode got was just downright unwise.
With the success of Animal Well both critically and financially I think its already a fair assessment to say that Bigmode Games and Dunkey's marketing strategy worked out well for Billy Basso and his years-long project. Let's hope it keeps going and that more people end up using their platform to promote cool, weird little indies.

Fair warning, these videos are quite bad but I did say I would link them so here's the stuff I mentioned in the video.

If you like what you see in this video be sure to like, comment and subscribe (I know lol) but it really does help a ton with letting me know I'm doing something right and getting my videos out to more people. Also, if you click this link it brings you to a page where you can become a member of the channel which only has 1 tier at 5 dollars a month. This gives you early access to any videos I have scheduled ahead of time, a membership badge, and (I think) most notably it will land your name in the supporters scroll at the end of every video. Great video, just a point on the KZread algorithm I accidentally found this video while googling Animal Well secrets. I thought “I’ll watch that later”. I then KZread search “animal well dunkey indie problem” and this video just never pops up. Pages and pages of scrolling and I couldn’t find it. I had to Google it again to find it. KZread search is horrible.

Never seen anything from your channel before but I thought you articulated yourself very well & i completely agree with your points! I'm an independent musician, so if my project got randomly picked up by someone with a massive following that would make a huge difference to me and honestly possibly even be life changing, yknow what I mean? Such a large part of being a creative is being seen, but on the same token for a lot of us that is just about the most painful part. People like Dunkey who already have these audiences and want to prop up indie games really go a LONG way for creatives, and like you said, I think arrangements like what Dunkey and Bigmode have going on will make indie devs' lives so much easier from the exposure alone. Anyhow, thanks for the video, and I hope you like the game - I got all the achievements already and it was a BLAST!

Nice essay about the topic. I think Indies are so important right now. The "AAA"-Titles are a coinflip most of the time, when they come out, so I resort to Indies. So Iam very onboard with your opinion and am thankful for Indies which get suggested through videos, friends or else. For me it takes too much time to constantly inform myself on new Indie-releases, so these are the ways to go for me.

2024 is the year of the indie forreal, every AAA game ive tried this year has been kinda whatever but some of the indies and AA have absolutely blown me away (balatro anyone?) finding reviewers that you dont necessarily have to agree with 100% but that you can trust to do a good job showcasing stuff even if they dont like it is huge. a great one for me lately has been Mortismal gaming who is less about indies but does such a good job covering games

I personally enjoy the more intimate engagements in smaller creators. Getting replies via text messages or responding during a stream can be rare when the creator has thousands of followers. It's nice to run into a channel that tries to engage with everyone. But don't let my preferences stop you from reaching for your goals. If you make it big, then hell yeah! I'll be cheering ya on, perhaps silently in the sea of comments.

that is absolutely fair, and i think its something a lot of people would agree with (i know that personally after a chat gets to a certain point with streams i become more spectator than chatter) regardless i appreciate the support be it here in the comments or just quietly watching, thanks for commenting :) (also just for the record i am VERY far from being at the point i cant reasonably respond to every comment lmao)

I couldn't agree more with your arguments here. What's happening with Dunkey and Animal Well are objectively great things and I am so excited. Some people just can't handle change, cant see outside their own experience. I've been gaming since the early 90s and I feel like Ive seen a golden age of gaming come and go, and what's slowly sucking the soul out of games is these huge publishers who are only concerned with their bottom lines

the very same people that piss themselves that a youtuber “dares” start a publishing company are the people that whine that AAA is soulless and makes products not games (which is true) drives me nuts that they flip out about the problem and then vilify a possible solution

Very beautiful essay, my man. Seriously idk what people get in their heads talking about "i don't care about small fry" and hoping people who give attention to indies to fail. Their views are stagnant and stinky, and so is their taste. People who use whatever their platform to lift up and give visibility to indies are cool as shit even though they don't get as many eyes on them as I feel they should.

i do get the sentiment of “have your own opinion” but for a lot of people being chronically online to keep up with game releases isnt something they have time for so finding a few decent youtubers that cover stuff you might like is a good way to keep things on your radar without putting time into it yourself but yeah the “small fry garbage” bit is like… cmon now lol, such a stupid thing for them to say and intentionally cutting themselves off from awesome games
