The Beginners Guide & Manufacturing Meaning

Ойындар

The Beginner's Guide by Davey Wreden is one of those games like Outer Wilds where it is of the utmost importance that you experience blindly. If your eyes drifted a bit while I talked during the intro to reading this, please do not finish the video without playing the game yourself, you are robbing yourself of an experience and your own interpretation.
It reminds me a bit of Noah Caldwell-Gervais' video essay on Kentucky Route Zero, where he talks about how anyone who says they've "solved" that game haven't really gotten it, and how I got much more out of that video having played the game and formed my own thoughts and opinions rather than seeing it through his eyes first.
PirateSoftware put out a short a month ago recommending this game to a developer that was struggling with motivation and the process of creating. I am not a game developer, but I would argue that this game will speak to anyone that's ever had to do a difficult thing, be it creative or not. Mustering the courage and motivation to go about doing things we find difficult is, well... difficult lol
If you made your way to this video and haven't checked out PSoft I would highly recommend his KZread channel for both his short form and long form streaming content. He is a very knowledgeable and sweet individual that deserves all of the success he is finding lately.
And if you somehow played this game or didn't know what The Stanley Parable is... I mean what the fuck man?
Seriously, though, there's only so much time in the day and I understand having not watched or played a thing, but if you enjoy anything about this game, or this video, The Stanley Parable is an absurdist game that taps into some of the same things but in a way that will absolutely get at least one good chuckle out of you. All of this stuff will be linked below.
Also, let me know how I did if you happen to read this. I kinda had the thoughts forming for this video in the hour or two after I played the game and before I looked anything up for myself typed out a crazy manifesto about it and then threw it together. This is more or less a pseudo-video essay and I tried to do a bit more work on the audio/music side of things to set the tone. My delivery on my scripts and the writing of my scripts still needs some work though lol

Holy shit, stumbled across pirate software not too long ago, and after the "mommy game" you. I instantly subscribed because, I believe its the least i can do for creators doing what they do. And then you drop this. And i don't know why, because this really came out of nowhere, i was expecting a little story about a guy that made games and then stopped because he got tired of it, and that's it My shock after watching this and realizing this is so much more, its an experience, its a story, its something you have to live to understand. I personally have been feeling "stuck", I don't know how exactly to explain it but not being able to do what you want to do and just being stuck in this endless cycle, this maze with eerie sounds and nauseating visuals. Thank you.

I really appreciate that you support creators that way. I'm guilty of it myself (a lot more aware now that I'm on the creator rather than the audience side) but a lot of people watch a thing, enjoy a thing and then just kinda hope KZread knows they liked it? lmao subbing and interacting does wonders to let the algorithm know "hey this thing is good and I want more of it" And speaking of that, full credit to the game, I would love to take credit for helping along to a realization of some sort but that is entirely Davey's doing and his writing. I would recommend playing the game still if you have an hour to kill sometime because I did remove a lot of Davey's commentary in favor of my own narrative, and this is the kinda game that 100 people can play and come out of it with different realizations Thank you for watching and commenting, it means a lot :)

im glad the youtube gods put this on my feed, this was a beautiful video that made me rethink how i interact with art- both my own and other peoples. i feel for koda, i also feel for davey in the way that we are taught to derive meaning in everything. we are told that whatever we create, or see, or hear, needs to be some deep expression or needs to have something grand to say. it scared me off from art for a long time because i needed everything i made to have this grand meaning but truly one of the purest forms of expression is creating only for yourself because you want to create. i think ill pick up my art tablet again after this. thank you and merry christmas :)

if you ever get that feeling like what youre making has to have some grander meaning just remember that all the great oil painters of history were all probably sketching dicks and ancient versions of the S on papyrus when they were kids jokes, but glad you liked the video thanks for watching and commenting :)

This was such a beautiful video that made me think and reminded me why we create, not for display but for the sake of doing so. Choosing to share that is different and I see that now. I thought about making songs again for awhile, because I used to be good about it, but I would only romanticize performing them for other people. But I would love to make little drawings and games like coda’s work to just capture and flesh out and explore some lightning in a bottle. Maybe make music again, but I would have to have a good reason for it like the games and the art. I don’t know. Meaning is nice like that. You forget about it sometimes, and go back to the black and white thinking your used to, and then every once and awhile your eyes open up again to what it’s all about. And it’s nice like that. I don’t know if that made sense. This was just a nice video and I wanted to explain my thoughts a bit. Thank you for the cool video and merry Christmas!!

Definitely, and I think its important to remember that if we ignore the context of the game and the wild shit thats going on there, theres also nothing wrong with making things specifically TO share with people, seeing how people respond to stuff you make is its own reward (for example I really enjoy comments like this even if I made the video for myself lol) Thanks for watching and commenting, and merry christmas :)

Trying to find meaning in other's work is always poisonous. Nobody wins if you cater to others before yourself. You're the only one that can ever have your own best interest in mind and no matter how you try and twist your own arm, you need to be happy first before you can share that happiness with others. This game really solidifies that concept for me.

hard agree, there was a lot of passing dialogue about davey feeling like he was helping/doing something good by absorbing himself w coda’s work and thats 100% the wrong way to go about making yourself happy, like you said you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others

@@NotAbsolutelySure The worst part is knowing that I've definitely 'wanted to help' the same way Davey did with different people and for various things and that search for validation is an endless well.

I once again thank the yt algorithm for recommending me all the begginer's guide videos, for this is once again a joy to watch and another interpretation of a work that talks about some really resonant stuff for creatives. Great work man, would love to see where you go from here.

As an addendum, this video also inspired me to go back and replay the beginner's guide, since the last time I played it was back in high school, and while I remember crying at the end of it, most of my emotion at the time was centered around the interpersonal aspect of Davey and coda's relationship. Now that I am almost 8 years later, finally in art college after a detour in uni, it's hitting a lot harder in the creative guts. Especially how no matter what you do or how you intend a piece, how mundane the initial idea was, how badly you want to create something just for yourself, there is always that looming expectation of what people will think, and if they will be pleased with the work, if they will understand the meaning, or give it their own. I have been struggling with the plot of a comic for a while now, the initial idea is that it was a tragic circle, the main character didn't really develop, it just told his story and he never really changes, but that's the point, that's the dramatic irony, the tragedy. He himself is content in what we perceive as his misery, but he does not feel it to be miserable and is content, and when I explain this or show this, people always seems to get a bit uncomfortable. People expect an ending, a breaking of the cycle, happy or sad, but it isn't the point. And all I can do is hope it will resonate with some. And this game, in combination with this video, is giving me the courage to stick with that ending.

I’m glad you found something in this video, and yeah thats the cruelest thing isnt it? The second you share a work of art its no longer “yours” anymore and its subject to expectations and everything that we all bring into experiencing art (our experiences, lives we lead) push us towards our own interpretation of a thing regardless of what that thing may have meant to the original creator There’s also a fun side to this though. Once its out of your hands its out of your hands, and people might find something in the things you make that you never intended but it means something to them still. Once you share it, its on the people engaging with it Good luck with the comic and thanks for watching and commenting :) I wasnt really expecting this video to get pushed to anyone lol

@@NotAbsolutelySure Exactly, it's a very double-sided coin, it's no longer yours, but your work also has the chance to mean something for someone beyond what you could have ever intended, and that's just a bit magical to me. It has the chance to live on in other people and become a part of their lives as well! And well, I'm glad it did get pushed to me haha, you have a very pleasant style and tone of voice to watch ^w^
