The problem you'll have with the current and future generations is they'll do exactly what this young lady is doing, set up businesses with a woke social justice cause behind it, which is incredibly divisive regardless of percentages. I would have declined the investment on principle, even though I think it's a good business opportunity. Deborah actually embodied the difference between the traditional feminist and the modern one here, which I greatly respect.

*I have a few ideas that I think would improve her book club and help increase gender equality:* *1. Make the adult box less feminin.* I don't want a lipstick in a book subscription. Actually, I don't want a lipstick at all. By making it more gender neutral she has the potential to reach a more diverse customer group. *2. Replace one of the items in the box for a short story or novella* (e.g. Penguin's little black classics). It's a book box after all, I'd rather have more to read than more stuff I don't need. The box would consist of one new book by a female author, one short story by a female author, and one or two items made by female creators. *3. Make a boy's subscription box!* 75% of book buyers are female for a reason: boys don't read. You can include books that both inspire reading and bring up feminist topics and fight toxic masculinity. By making a boy's subscription box you can encourage boys to read more and encourage gender equality at an early age.

There's a huge difference between, say, trying to sell a small city car to women (appealling to soccer mums or whatnot), and the belief that such car should also be engineered by women.

@@vibovitold why? I'm an engineer, I don't see a problem with it. Who would understand the needs of that market better than someone from that market?

@@SiriusMined this logic sounds oversimplified to me. you obviously don't have to be ill in order to be a great doctor, or be a criminal to be a great criminal attorney. being part of a certain market doesn't really guarantee understanding the NEEDS of this market (better than someone from the outside). otherwise the whole advertising business wouldn't exist :) after all, all they do is promote businesses they're not themselves a part of. or look at fashion design, for instance. have female customers ever been bothered or detered by the fact that Yves Saint Laurent or Armani were male? and didn't boys love J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter saga? were they repelled by the fact they were written by a woman? even if you were right though, why not battle-test it instead of making assumptions. just let the market / your customers decide, voting with their feet? a bookshop can sell "50 Shades of Grey" (written by a woman) and "The Fault in Our Stars" (written by a man) side by side. both attracted record numbers of female readers so why limit yourself? and if something isn't selling well, just take it off your offer, regardless of the gender. the movie "The Fault in Our Stars" was also directed by a man, and it didn't stop it from being a bit hit among women (according to Forbes, "the most incredible statistic coming out of the weekend is that the audience was 82% women"). so why the need to assume that the author's gender should match the reader's gender. i also don't understand what does being an engineer have to do with the point you are making : ) i respect the profession, kudos for you, i just fail to see how it's relevant for our discussion. i'm a software developer - what of it. i don't know about you, but i don't personally use all the software i work on. i just do my job (reasonably) well, and the user doesn't really care who wrote it, they're just happy it doesn't freeze and crash.

Deborah and Sarah acting jealous, they were threatened by her being so young and having a FANTASTIC business. She has observed her market, done her research and turned over £800k with £200k in the bank. Disappointing and childish behaviour from the female dragons.
