    Hi Mark ,love your channel, I have many Abu and Omoto/Akios reels and have carbon fibre in most.I also have a couple with smooth drag flat ground washers and also smooth drag fibre washers.Of all the combinations the ultimate for pure smoothness and range is the flat lapped metal washers with the Xtreme smoothie fibre washers.It gives you a super drag

    Interesting. I have never thought about the precision of the metal washers however does make sense. I may have to try some just to see for myself. What I have done is polish the metal washers with some 3000 grit paper. Not sure if it helps but can't hurt. Hey thanks for the comment and support. Happy 4th!

    Thanks for the input. To grease or not to grease drag washers seems to be a question that gets both answers. I just received a Chinese clone of an Accurate Twin Drag reel that has terribly jerky and changing drag. After watching this video and another video from Accurate on using Cal's universal reel grease on their washers, I suspect totally dry drag washers on the Chinesium reel is most of the problem. I'm going to get some Cal's drag grease and give it a try. The drag on this particular clone reel is so bad brand new, I literally have nothing to lose. As is it can go from a decent preset drag on the "strike" setting one time and an almost total lockdown the next time. The preset dial is not moving so it has to be the drag stacks themselves. If the grease alone doesn't do the trick, I'll be changing the drag washers themselves. I already knew reels should be stored without pressure on the drag but haven't thought much about grease on drag washers until I opened the reel box today and tried to set the drag. I have a few "real" Accurate twin drag reels in various sizes and have never had such a problem with the real deal.

    I never cared much about a drag system until I lost my first big bass. I blamed it on the fishing line but looking back it was more drag than anything. That was the day I went from monofilament to braid. Then I started fishing for 20 pound striped bass with light tackle using ABU 5500s. I was still using braid but I was burning up my drag system. Looking for an answer I found carbon fiber and like you said the answer about the grease goes both ways. My experience tells me that the grease makes the drag much smoother and I don’t see much difference in drag tension if any at all. Thanks for the comment thanks for watching.

    Great video. In ABU 6500 C4TS reels the drag washers look just like what you had in the video. Were they carbon fiber or felt washers? My washers seem smooth to the touch. Where would you get carbon fiber washers to do a replacement?

    Everything I own is carbon fiber. You can’t really see it in the video but the carbon washers have a crossing pattern or a waffle texture. EBay or any parts supplier. www.ebay.com/itm/Carbontex-Smooth-Drag-washer-kit-set-Abu-Garcia-6000-6500-6600-C3-C4/283955177894?hash=item421d0c29a6:g:rbgAAMXQzr1R0GqU Past this link you can see a picture.

    Hi Mark ! Should Carbon Fiber drag washers always be greased? My thinking is yes, but have noticed some new reels come from the factory with little or no grease on the washers.

    In my opinion yes it makes for a much smoother drag. I have never ran them dry some people say that you lose a little bit on the high end with grease. For me it’s well worth the trade off for a smoother system. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.

    I’ll start off by saying wow 300 reels that’s a lot of fishing reels. I had close to 40 at one time but decided to sell some of them thinking if I die my wife’s gonna put them in a yard sale and I couldn’t bear the thought. But getting back to the Drag situation, that does not surprise me people in general just don’t understand the whole Drag system deal. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment buddy.

    I have an old bass pro spinning reel I have had 15-20 years. It was always good but last small catfish I hooked it ran with the line like there was no drag even on max drag. I took it apart and noticed the grease on the washers, I assumed I messed up when lubricating the reel at some point so I cleaned it off both the felt and metal washers and now the drag works fine again. So it was supposed to have grease on them?

    Grease is good for carbon fiber washers however I’ve never used it on felt I always replace the felt with carbon fiber. You should be able to upgrade to the carbon fiber washers if you do a little research. I have a reel right now that I got from a friend that has carbon fiber washers but they’re some what sticky. I plan to grease them. I have taken Reels apart and saw where they were over lubricated with oil and the oil seeps into the washers. Maybe that was the problem. Sounds like you fixed it if they’re nice and smooth I’d just keep fishing. Thanks for the comment.

    I’m new to servicing my reel . I’m having drag problems but washers are perfectly fine . My question is , on every drag washer should you grease them ? Would that make it stick more or be slippery where it messes up the drag ?

    Washers are made of different materials. It would depend on which reel and drag system you have. If you give me the model I can look at it for you.

    @@johnnyhernandez7361 I tried to see what the washers are made of but not having any luck. This is an expensive reel so I would assume that they are carbon fiber. Carbon fiber typically have a waffle looking weave. There are people that run them dry but I am not one of them. You may loose a little drag with grease but I much rather have less and be super smooth than a lot of drag that's sticking. I ALWAYS grease mine however I use grease made for it. Cal's universal drag grease. Is yours sticking or just not getting any tension.

  • @abugarciareelrepairandmain8684

    @abugarciareelrepairandmain8684

    Based on my experience, if you want more drag you need bigger drag washers. Most reels will list the drag strength on the box in lbs. Most of the low profile reels are 10 to 18 lbs of drag out of the box. These reels are $100 to $300. Depending on what you have (old style felt etc.) you may increase the drag by replacing the stock washers with carbon fiber. The increase would be minimal but the quality but be greatly improved. Remember heavy settings on you drag is not always your friend. Smooth drag is! Thanks for watching. Great question.
