DR Z Z28 MK II Prototype - Acoustic-lIke Qualities

Recorded this for DR Z when he gave me the Z/28 MK 2 to check out. Thought it worth sharing... wonderful amp.
Recorded with an IR and added a little room sound with a UA plugin.

Very Nice Adam. The Z 28 MKII has so many tasty tones inside, if I do have to say so myself . You do a great job of demonstrating them.

Well, I show 1 tone. 🤣 But it's a good tone! 🤘🤘Kidding aside, when I play it on acoustic I play it the same way.

It's a really neat amp and feels like it's special and different the minute you plug in. Hard to describe, but it has a ton of detail, depth, and character. Works really well with single coils or humbuckers too. Thanks!

Hey! I love this Adam, always seeking ultra clean amp sounds, so open and "airy' feeling man. I think the wreck can some close no? Oh and I can't get enough of Dennis Frankowski! jeez.

Wreck - I try master up, volume and tone controls down, maybe lower your guitar volume. Maybe 5751 tube in V1 might help. Note that I've still never tried the amp though. 😉 In general with any amp though, I think you just play around with it and the guitar and try to figure out to make it work. Like you lower your guitar volume and lose some highs, dial those back in on the amp, then maybe switching to the neck pickup full up is your lead sound (more gain and volume) and that's all you need. Just throwing out ideas.

Also, I was really trying to go as clean as I could in that clip, playing real light for instance. Dennis, yes, he's just a riot. That was all to a click too.

Fantastic Adam, I love all of Mike's amplifiers. Back when I first started playing in 1974 my goal was to have as many different guitars as possible with only my favorite amplifier. Many years later I realized I actually need as many different amplifiers as possible with only a couple trusty guitars.

I love all his amps too. Every one I've tried has something special about it. Agree, amps are just as important and as guitars, if not more so.

Great demo Adam. Awesome new amp by the good Doctor. I loved the short drum clip at the end of the video. For the uninitiated, that was the one and only Dennis Frankowski on the drums. I was fortunate enough to play with Dennis on a number of occasions a few years ago. He is without a doubt one of the best in the business and the best drummer I’ve ever had the privilege to play with. Tremendous talent. My best to you brother!

Can you tell me, does the bass end stay tight on this amp and does it have a lot of punch and spanky to it? Also main thing actually its not really scooped in the mids is it. Its always hard to tell from youtube?

  • @AdamGotheridge

I would say definitely not flubby. I mainly played it kind of clean though, and pretty loud clean. Sort of a hair of color or grit, but clean.

@@daviddorrian5349 Not scooped like a fender you might think of a fender. I'd say in general it just sounded full and complete to me. I know that's vague, but basically it just sounded big and glorious to me. My wife and daughter thought so too. It's kind of 3d and dimensional. Hard to explain.

@@AdamGotheridge Sounds perfect to me, as long as its not scooped. Really does sound a special amp. I've got a few things to sell and waiting on a couple of pay checks then I'm getting the combo on order. I've got the Z-Wreck in silver with match cab and want a combo amp that's got the Z sound like that but that's also different. Sounds like it fits the bill perfectly.

@@daviddorrian5349 Cool! I think you'll like it and it will be a nice change from the wreck. I liked it a lot with humbuckers or single coils. And you have to like the convenience of the combo, particularly in that cab. And it's a cool red to boot. :) If I didn't already have 9(?) Z's I'd sure have a Z28. As it is, I don't get around to playing them all anyway, and I really like them all too. Thanks.
