Dr. Suraj Yengde on BR Ambedkar's "Annihilation of Caste"

Ойын-сауық

The Radical Foundations series brings you expert facilitators for intensive seminars on foundational radical works.
On October 23rd, 2021, Dr. Suraj Yengde delivered a lecture on "Annihilation of Caste" by B.R. Ambedkar.
About the book
Ambedkar was a prolific thinker, Dalit intellectual, leader of caste oppressed majority, and a tireless activist for the abolition of caste in India. Annihilation of Caste was originally written in 1936 as a speech which Ambedkar was subsequently forbidden from delivering. He went on to self-publish this text and it soon became a powerful and gut-wrenching indictment of India's caste system rooted in the violence of Hindu scriptures. It has endured as one of the singularly most important books today and comparable in scope and influence to Marx and Engel's The Communist Manifesto or Dubois' The Souls of Black Folk.
Dr. Suraj Yengde is a leading scholar and public intellectual. He is the author of the bestseller Caste Matters and co-editor of award winning anthology The Radical in Ambedkar. Caste Matters was recently featured in the prestigious "Best Nonfiction Books of the Decade" list by The Hindu. Yengde holds a research associate position with the department of African and African American Studies, a non-resident fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University, and is part of the founding team of Initiative for Institutional Anti-Racism and Accountability (IARA) at Harvard University.

    Good conversation.I have read Annihilation of Caste many times.Its lampooning language tears apart the abstract notion of caste.A well researched book.The book challenges the caste order in Hindu society.He is so disgruntled with the caste system of Hindus that he says: A hindu can be bad or worse but a good hi indu there can not be.

    1:21:55 "one day my professor was lecturing lecturing about Caste abolition and how the anti-Untouchability movement started, and he mentioned Gandhi but not Ambedkar" 😡 that's obscenely casteist, and either ignorant about history or dishonest about history

    Varnashram Dharm and dharm arth kaam moksha have been the most brilliant ideas in social management. Brahman, kshatriya, vaisya and Sudra is most accurate classification of human difference. Similarly, sarasvati puja for Brahmans, Durga puja for Kshatriyas, Diwali for Vaisya, and holi for Shudra. Like Buddha, ambedkar was born Hindu. The brilliance of Buddha and Ambedkar comes from their background in Hinduism. Buddhism has disappeared from India, korea, china, Japan and other places. Buddha and Ambedkar would have grown higher in the fold of Hinduism.

    Dr. Suraj when we read the title "Buddha and his Dhamma" in english language, we have to read it as"बुद्ध and his धम्म" and not "बुद्धा and his धम्मा" because when we write devanagari words in English language we write vowel "a"at the end of alphabet which completes word. When we read word "बुद्ध"as बुद्धा it is 1st person plural in Pali. So kindly pronounciet it accordingly. Thanks. ड

    Great content! Today 4IR means enforcing caste system globally. So it's very relevant topic. Technically some problems - making unpleasant noises by rubbing the paper near the mike, talking to fast and not always clear. Remains very interesting, relevant - Thank you!

    There is no such thing as the caste system 1. Caste is not mentioned in the Vedas (which date back to at least 5500 BCE). The Purushasukta of the Rig Veda has one mention, but this verse is acknowledged as a later day insert as its Sanskrit differs stylistically from the rest of the Rig Vedic text. 2. Please note that the Vedas are the canonical texts of Sanatan Dharma. For any text to be recognized as a shastra, it must be in consonance with the Vedas. Any text that contradicts the Vedas cannot be considered a shastra. As the Vedas do not mention caste, any text or verse mentioning caste cannot be said to be a shastra or shastric. 3. Caste is not mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita. The Bhagavad Gita is the first text where Bhagwan Sri Krishna lays out the concept of varna (individual state of mind) based on mix of gunas of the individual which can be sattvic, rajasic or tamasic. Varna and caste are two separate concepts. 4. When British took over India, they wanted to use religious laws to govern subjects. While they found Mughals Islamic laws to apply to Muslims, no universal law was used by Hindus. Each jati used its own laws to self-govern. 5. The British reviewed obscure Dharmashastras texts such as the Yajnyavalka Smriti, Naradasmriti, Visnusmriti and the Manusmriti to find some laws to apply. They settled on the Manusmriti. The Manusmriti was the least known and referred text among the Dharmasutras and barely used. 6. The Manusmriti is not an authentic text. At the time the British discovered it in the 1850’s, there were 50 different versions floating around, each different from the other and internally contradictory. Most of the text is anti-caste, with retroactive insertions in a text that is thousands of years old. This could have been made by the British themselves. 7. The British implemented the caste system in law beginning 1870s. This was the first time that caste was put in law in thousands of years of Indian history. These laws were withdrawn in the 1930’s. For example, the Mahars were employed as soldiers in the army of the Maratha Empire. However, the British outlawed them from army jobs under caste laws despite Mahars having fought for British in some campaigns.

    Study the views of Ambedkar on Islam, and find out why he did not convert to Islam or Christianity. Why Buddhism, which is minor branch of Hinduism.

    Has Caste been annihilated - or become even more pronounced?

  • @manutrivedi5771
    @manutrivedi577111 ай бұрын

    Dr. Ambedkar was brilliant. However the Annihilation of Caste is a rant. It’s intent is a little bit of wishful thinking. Caste may function differently at different times. But to imagine that you can ever end it is a little childlike and simple - to say the least. And Yengde is a fake. Importance given to him comes from a sense of guilt that the Indian society rightfully feels. That’s why no one calls out the fact that he’s not very bright. This is the entire truth.
