Dr Gabor Maté on Psychedelics, Trauma and The Body (Part 5)

We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world? Joining us live on stage in London - in conversation with filmmaker and author David Malone - the renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise - physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living.
Illness and trauma are defining how we live. 45% of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70% of Americans take at least one prescription drug.
Over four decades of clinical experience, Dr Gabor Maté has found that the common definition of ‘normal’ is false: virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, as we grow further and further apart from our true selves.
Filled with stories of people in the grip of illness or in the triumphant wake of recovery, this life-affirming talk from the beloved physician and author will show how true health is possible - if we are willing to embrace authenticity above social expectations.
Gabor Maté is a retired physician, bestselling author and renowned speaker, highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, stress and childhood development. He has written four bestselling books published in nearly thirty languages, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction. He has been awarded the Order of Canada (his country’s equivalent of the MBE) and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver, for his ground-breaking medical work and writing.
David Malone is a filmmaker and TV presenter whose documentaries include Testing God, Soul Searching (both Channel 4), Dangerous Knowledge and The Secret Life of Waves (both BBC). He is the author of The Debt Generation.

“It was a lot more work than i anticipated.” That can only said by someone who tries or has tried to change any part of their life. It is a process, not a magical overnight transformation.

I calmly disagree, I think he is quite ordinary, and that his public persona is not a true reflection of his private life. I say that after having watched a few of his lectures with his son, Daniel. It is made clear there that Gabor learned a lot and understands much more than he can perform, he talks more than walks. He is an extremely elequent and inteligent speaker, which makes him a great deliverer of this information, still he is human, all too human.

@@idank777 I do agree with you and even though I appreciate him and agree with just about everything he says and have found to be true in my own life,I still think he is only human and I also think he talks it better than he is able to walk it.I think he probably knows that deep down too but being in such demand as speaker and having so much adulation and demand for your presnce it must be very difficult to walk away for a while and actually do more of the healing work he still needs to do. This absolute projection and adulation of him as a "saint"is really not healthy and is another sickness of our culture. There are plenty of other people who work really hard everyday doing great work and saving lives but we hardly hear about them. I sometimes wish he would take a break as you can hear what he has to say all over the internet and he rarely says anything new and repeats himself over and over again. Still love him but think he addicted to the sound of his own voice too often.

I’m grateful he is alive, has done much inner work, and speaks well. Agree the effectiveness of psychedelics depends upon use, intent, & more. They can easily be more destructive than helpful, especially if haphazardly or unconsciously consumed, or for escape instead of inner exploration. Spirits encourage that, they want you out of your body. KNOW what it, and YOU are WORTH. #priceless #humans #belove

People are misusing psychedelics, overusing them. I know of two people who had strokes likely from overuse of certain substances.
