Dr. Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D.is the co-author of The Pleasure Trap available here:
www.amazon.com/dp/1570671974?...
Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics - an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.
Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, Dr. Lisle lectures widely on health and wellness.

It's funny you mentioned how many pulmonary doctors and therapists smoke. I originally went to nursing school and was shocked at how many health care professionals eat fast food and smoke. A lot of nurses and doctors are actually some of the most unhealthy ppl you will ever met. I realized this wasn't for me so I went to massage school next and the overall population was much healthier. A lot of them are into yoga and eating healthy. There was at least 2 teachers at my school who are vegan and I met a couple other vegans as well. One of the teachers is actually a raw food vegan and I was really impressed at how physically fit and sharp she was. That planted a big seed because just a couple short years later I became vegan myself.

41m : what clinical experience taught L....; ~ 42m diverse work experiences will inevitably form a basis for a future career/ future wisdom even if the job seems "irrelevant." 45:25 need to enjoy the process of a job or career .... make a living vs make a life ... we can be too cautious with career and and fail by not taking a risk

I have a lot of respect for Dr. Lisle and his explanation of 'luck' makes sense, but either he's ignoring completely or simply doesn't believe in the fact that we are energetic beings living on an energetic plane and can experience 'wanting' and 'getting that which we want'.

Sometimes Dr Lisle says his father was open, sometimes that he wasn't. From the little knowledge I have I think he means that he was adventurous but not very artistic/unconventional? Anyways thank you for this episode.

I like the casino analogy. Life is a combination of what you get and what you do with it. And I appreciate his take on our good fortune at this time in this place. In my youth I used to moan about my unhappy life to my exceedingly kind and patient father. At some point he would steer the conversation to the many people in this world who do not have running water. Nothing like a little perspective.

Dr Lisle is skeptical that a keto diet has any affect on mental health, says it doesn’t make sense, yet it has been used to treat epilepsy for a hundred years. Chris Palmer is a Harvard psychiatrist publishing studies on his treatment and has had a lot of success stories. I’m wfpb, and like Dr Lisle’s takes for the most part, but here he seems to be too quick to dismiss something it appears he is ignorant about.

@@Goodbyeeveryonehere Dr Chris Palmer’s book Brain Energy explains how certain mental health issues, including schizophrenia, are heavily correlated with brain health issues, particularly brain metabolism. That is his working thesis and why he believes keto to benefit those types of mental disorders. And he wouldn’t say it’s a cure, but an effective therapeutic protocol which has shown to put these disorders, for some, into remission or greatly eased the symptoms. I don’t know if Dr. Goldner has claimed to have cured schizophrenia as she has for lupus, but if so then she should publish at least case studies as Palmer has been doing.
