In this episode, my guest is Dr. Casey Means, MD, a physician trained at Stanford University School of Medicine, an expert on metabolic health and the author of the book, "Good Energy."     The world or the USA? Many countries do not have these issues because they don’t have rubbish diets and have a much higher reliance on public transport, walking and cycling e.g . Japan Korea Indonesia Vietnam China Malaysia Italy Germany Scandinavian countries. Yes some closer to the US diet are also heading the wrong way but it is less of a problem outside USA ( PS I am in Australia and we are definitely heading the wrong way due to the increase in rubbish diet)

    yeah, one of the people you respected the most promoting eating the babies of deer and stag within the first 4 minutes of their podcast is a wake up call. If that's how they want to get life they don't deserve it. They fear being treated like humans are treated in the matrix because of their own sick souls.

    As an emergency medicine physician for 20 years now practicing functional medicine, Dr. Means has hit the nail on the head of what we need to do as a system to create health as opposed to just the treatment disease. Essentially, one of the main drivers of my switching specialties. Allopathic medicine is missing half the boat. Thank you for this.

    The last 30 minutes is EVERYTHING! Hearing from a physician how childhood trauma, the importance of feeling safe, and the relationship between control, fear and perceived “threat” changes metabolic functioning… “trauma and fears of 8 billion people… our cells are responding to those threats” All related to our fear of death and our bodies, minds and spirits needing to adapt our resources to keep us “alive”. So amazing and her advice to be present in nature and outside is key. Thanks so much for interviewing her!

    The whole "being outside" thing is so underrated. Our family spends more time outdoors than inside. Compared to our family members who live near us but are quite literally scared of going outside (bugs, weather, no fluffy couch to sit on), our family is within that 6.8% of true metabolically healthy Americans she talks about. No meds, our biomarkers are spot on. Outside is literal medicine, and I wish more people understood that.

    After my last pregnancy, I was finding it hard to get a full hour or more workout with a young family and full-time job, so I busted it up into 10-minute bites throughout the day. 10 minutes, 5 times a day, and I ate sensibly. I had a slow, gradual loss. I lost 60# in 18 months.

    I was very moved by Dr. Means' final words: 2:44:05 She said beautiful and very important things! Spending more time outdoors as an antidote to existential fear and to regain awareness that we are one with the environment: "we're a process not an entity".

    I've found Ulta labs to be quite reasonable, and they don't require blood orders. I don't have insurance anymore, but when I did, a few simple thyroid blood markers were $1300 and my insurance would only cover $1000. I'd pay for the rest out of pocket. The same tests are ~$40 from Ulta labs without insurance. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of health insurance. I'd shit on the board room tables of health insurers if I could. Free sample on me.

    @@limitisillusion7 that's an awesome resource! I never place orders through insurance for this exact reason. I typically place them for cash paying patients through Rupa Health or Lab Assist. Much better pricing than even a patients co pay. Also some of the kost important tests I order aren't even covered, so what's the point.

    This is so damn good!! As someone who has struggled with obesity all my adult life and is currently taking a GLP-1 medication, I am motivated to drop it and try the things mentioned here to increase GLP-1 naturally. Walking on the treadmill multiple times during the day is golden for me as some who works from home and struggles to get the one longer walk in, this is so much more manageable with my work schedule!     This conversation confirms an intuition I had while listening to Christopher Palmer's book. As he was describing the bidirectional relationship between not just all mental health conditions, but also mental health conditions AND physical conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, it dawned on me that he was actually pitching a unifying theory of ALL chronic health conditions. I am SO glad we're starting to figure this all out!

    We are from the UK and currently travelling in the US and we noticed how few people walk on your streets, most restaurants and shops are created for drive thru or pulling up to the entrance by car. Back home we have a system of public transport which means you at least walk to the train/tube/bus stop, you walk when you have to change over up and down - and you are still faster at your destination than if you took a car, which also is charged a ULEZ (emissions tax) in city areas. My point is that your inactivity levels are baked into how your every day errands or work commutes are done. In the UK if you go out for lunch, you walk to the nearest food shop, in the US my colleagues drive - even to get a coffee which often contains sugar. On the other hand I notice that more parents drive their children to school instead of walking them like I do every morning, and I notice how many drive up to my local gym. We are getting more inactive here in the UK and obesity is going up...

    Hi Dr. Huberman-enjoyed the show, thanks. I am a 56 y.o. woman-completely revamped my nutrition/diet because of a higher cholesterol lab result as well as a fear of going down the same aging road as my parents (decreased mobility and alzheimers). What seemed to work best was cutting out all meat, most dairy and avoiding processed food (occasionally have seafood if at restaurant and no other choices.). I was finally able to lose that nagging 8ish pounds. I do not consider myself a vegan (in spite of my kids' picking on me!) and truly believe that individuals should choose for themselves what they eat. If I crave meat I will have it. I've cut back to almost zero alcohol (no real desire for it, but have to fight the cultural draw at times), have improved sleep habits, and I exercise and strength train regularly. I apologize for the long back story, but I think it's relevant to my question. I struggle with knee pain from osteoarthritis. I have been told I can be as active as I want. I would love to have guidance on nutritional ways to improve this.(I have turmeric in my diet now.) I hate that my knees swell with activity (tennis, golf, pickleball, etc.). What is the thinking these days? Would love to avoid replacement surgery-have you done a show about his yet? Best!

    I've many of the labs podcast over the past few years and they have inspired me to return to study at 50 to learn more. This is the best podcast I have seen so far.     Dear Andrew, this episode came at the perfect time, as I realized last week from a routine bloodtest, that my metabolism is completely crashed (Type 2 Diabetes Insulin Levels) and my doctors didn‘t bother telling me about it, as I‘m not yet prediabetic (at 22 years old, BMI 26). This made me panic and research, what „illness“ could cause a bad metabolism and if I needed to take medicine. I came to the conclusion, that all the things you two talked about is what needed to change in my life. In just a week of implementing some of those things you just talked about, my energy and mental health are at an all time high and health issues that I have suffered with are declining almost magically. I will never go back to what I did before and am so immemsensely thankful for the work you do! I have been put on a weightloss drug myself without any information that I needed to change my lifestyle. I‘m thankful to be able to access this highly valuable knowledge, and for you for takimg the time to educate people! I will spread the message! All love from Switzerland

    Engaging in both endurance & resistance training, in addition to maintaining an active lifestyle generally, can help improve the functioning of mitochondria and may decrease cancer risk. These things matter, and they are low-no cost; we need only DO them and keep doing them! 🙌👍

    It’s typically not a cost issue. People are getting lazier and don’t have the discipline and willpower to do what it takes to achieve the results.

    This woman is briliant! I wish all doctors thought that way -- possibly many share her views, but the way the health-care system is set up, you don't get to philosophize (meant as a compliment) with your patients. It's chop chop and out you go. Her work is certainly cut out for her and it's a Sisyphean task, but I know Dr. Huberman will help, as he's proven to be expert at pushing (well, carrying) rocks uphill. I hope her views win out sooner than later, it's hard not to despair of the way of the world vis-a-vis peoples' well-being.

    I Intermittent fast and do OMAD. It works best for me to keep my hunger down and not overeat. My eating window is 2 to 4 hours. Best to keep not being hungry, blood glucose stays low, have higher energy and am finally losing weight. I love long fasts to up to 60 hours. No problem the longer i have been fasting. Doing it for 5 years.

    Dr. Casey Means is a very rare person who is honest, truthful and whose analysis is as detailed yet as broad as humanely possible. The best we can do is share her message with our relatives, friends, and acquaintances. Thank you Andrew for your channel, conducted in the same spirit. When lots and lots of people get this good information, they will hopefully be able to push back on the forces of evil and greed in the ag, pharma and financial industries.

    Man this is fascinating. As a woman approaching my menopausal years I would love to know more about all of this is relation to hormones. A continuous hormone monitor would be such an incredible tool.

    Absolutely fantastic. Dr.Casey hits the issue of nutrition and metabolic health exactly where it really matters. The manner in which she presents her views and the way Andrew directs the conversation is captivating and shows their intent to help people. Reminds me of that classic from Enigma "Return to innocence" , back to basics and back to nature. Appreciate if Andrew could arrange for a podcast to discuss the techniques to counter sugar cravings.     Can we please use this as a catalyst to revolutionize our western culture? Remote work instead of working in windowless cells for 40-60 hours a week. Shorter work weeks so we can focus on things like nature, our families, communities and our own mental health. Food farmed in small community farms or our own yards so we control what goes into the food and the quality. Focus on sleep health over productivity because if we don't sleep well, we can't function at all. Radical changes need to be made and not more ways to make more money and more objects that numb us from the pain we are experiencing from being focused on all the wrong things. Thank you Dr. Casey Means, and thank you Dr. Huberman for having her on your podcast. I am so thankful for you both.

    Andrew, I am with you! Today is actually my one year anniversary of being on a carnivore diet. With rare exceptions and the addition of a daily half avocado, I eat only meat, eggs, organs, seafood and plenty of butter, tallow and some raw cultured dairy and my own homemade bone broth. Dr. Means recommends all these vegetables and seasonings, but that doesn't work for me. I find amazing food freedom (satiety) eating almost entirely animal products.

Then I just told my friend yesterday I can't workout like I used to because I fell like I don't have energy, and just the next day guess who releases a new video on the topic? You are a life saver.     Such good, good information! It really set something off in me when Dr. Means discussed how "muscle contraction is medicine" because of how it stimulates glucose channels in the cells, which ultimately makes it better to move often than to just exercise once during the day. Even as a personal trainer, one thing I try to help people understand is the fact that exercise is a formality. It's great, but we were designed to move all day, and in fact, most people did so just a few generations ago. That makes the info mentioned in this podcast make a lot of sense to me. Huberman Lab continues to be a podcast that I look forward to every Monday. I love the scientific deep dive and the various body/health related topics. Life changing info on this channel.

    You’re exactly right about the Soleus muscle! It’s actually the most important muscle for returning blood flow to the heart. So it’s extremely powerful for blood pressure and heart health. Hence all the elderly who sit in rocking chairs have such long lives because they are activating soleus and keeping their hearts so healthy.
