    Dr Brubaker Muslims are NOT used to have their story book look in a critical way I can tell you as a former Muslim you are one of the first people doing this sort of thing without having a bounty on your head so to let you know you're going to get an aggressive comments from Muslims every once in while, cuz this is new to them and to everyone else too but you are doing a great job and your efforts are appreciated.

    @@user-zi6uv4kx6y the so-called "bring Surah like it" challenge was purposefully designed so it could never be met. Because first we have to ask on which criteria are we judging this challenge and who will be the jury. We can't really produce anything exactly like the Shakespeare sonnets for example cuz the would be copying but people have made something better than the Qur'an in my opinion. But if Muslims are asking something similar to the Quran in recitation style and linguistic vernacular the challenge is met by the authors of surah Faa ghaf and surah Korona! Also Muslims need to stop threatening and murdering everyone who tries to bring something like the Qur'an if really want people to take on the challenge !

    When people mention 'debunking you' -- I could be wrong, but I get the sense (since there is a lot theologically at stake in the area of Qur'anic preservation) that your detractors are thinking you fabricated these manuscripts and variants, (that they are not authentic pieces of history) in order to debunk the legitimacy of the notion of the Qur'an's perfect preservation throughout time. But as you yourself said, these are academic, historical videos, and you do not seem to be concerned with making theological/spiritual truth claims, yea or nay.

    There has been some considerable discussion in the past decade, mostly revolving around Christoph Luxenberg's (pseudonym) book, "The Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Qurʾan." Yes, I have thought about it, and the wider linguistic questions. I am not a trained linguist, but there are people among our colleagues who are such (e.g. Ahmad Al-Jallad and Mark Durie). I do find the line of reasoning intriguing, and even compelling for some of its apparent explanatory power, though I think that ongoing rigorous treatment is called for. A single major shift in thinking on something raises a dozen other questions or problems that then need to be considered. Thanks for the question! DB

    I think you are referring to the appearance of things in the Quran that some people feel reflect material of earlier works, including material from the Bible. There are different ways to deal with such things, and I am not opposed to touching on the subject, especially when it is relevant to some variant or correction. But, in a general sense, for now I really want to stick fairly close to my specific topic. So, will keep in mind. Thanks so much! DB

    It seems no matter how many variants there are in Quran manuscripts, Muslims will assume they are somehow canonical readings. They’re not. And the “canonical readings” was a later development, an afterthought, to avoid the natural conclusion that the Quran was corrupted. “Oh no! We have so many differences between all our Qurans! What do we do!?” “Let’s just say they’re all original. They all go back to Muhammad. All seven of them. I mean ten. I mean fourteen. I mean thirty. I mean...Allahu Akbar the Quran is perfectly preserved!”

    Is there a possibility to know the oldest manuscripts of commentators on the Quran, and to what century dose it belong exactly? of course i mean the oldest commentators. It is not my area, but some of my colleagues have looked at some of the earliest manuscripts of some of the hadith collections and I am always interested to hear about such things. Your question may be specifically about the tafsir works, of which there are many. Some of the early ones are Tafsīr Mujāhid and Tafsīr Muqātil b. Sulaymān. As to the earliest manuscripts, I don't remember specifics of my conversations but my very general impression is that the earliest complete manuscript of Sahih Bukhārī is something like 12th or 13th cent. I could probably Google it, but this is just my memory from conversations with colleagues. There are really so many different works, and each one has, probably, a different story when it comes to the manuscript attestation. Good question, thanks. DB

And dles the variant rasms potentially multiply when overlaid with variant Qira'at? Of course as with languages sentence construction and context are also determinants to its meaning - how significant are your variant rasms on the particular sentences where they occur?

Was really veryvinterested in the Sanaa manuscript & was wondering if you have done any work in that text? 1) Of particular interest to me is the lower text on the manuscript. From what I have understood, they have only worked on lower texts on 36 folios. Is that all that they can retrieve from all the fragments that are in possession or do they have more to work on going forward? 2) Also am i right in suggesting that the lower text of the sanaa manuscript is perhaps the oldest text of the quran we have in possession?

    You are talking about the Sanaa Palimpsest. You are right that the lower text of the palimpsests (there are also some folia in Birmingham, studied by Alba Fedeli) might be among the earliest written Quran texts that have reached us. As to your question #1, I would defer to those who have worked on these folia for a full and up-to-date discussion of the current state of research. It would be good to do a series of videos on that. Perhaps I could interview Asma Hilali or some of the others. Thanks for the questions. DB

    @Variant Quran Thank you so very kindly for your response Dr Brubaker. Yes indeed, such an interaction between academics on this subject would be very educational. As a lay person, there has been very little access to developments in this regard. Getting to the point though, I do remember reading that there were around 20 potato sacks worth of msnuscripts when they bagged them in 1972 (before Dr Gerd Puin got working on them). Fast forward 48 yrs into the present day with Dr Puins wife and Dr Hilali have now worked on tgis subject. Yet I find myself asking why so long and what ever happened to the 20 potato sacks of bags of manuscript material they initially found. Indeed, a more detailed video on this subject would shed a whole of light on this matter. I thank you very kindly once again for your earlier reply.

    One of the curiosity of the current day Qur'an is the number of Huf's Qur'ans there are = 7. Since this is the one that has been deemed to be the best by Cairo in 1924, Egypt in 1934(?) and then in 1985 by King Faud of Saudi Arabia. Which one out of the 7 was chosen? Noting that one of the means scholars have is assessment of the writing style of the author allowing evaluation of the style scholars can see if it was a single author or multiple even the gender of the writer. is there such a evaluation of those 7?

    I’ve got your book and it was a fascinating read. But people seems to believe that these 20 examples is enough to disprove the overall preservation of the Qur’an? It clearly shows corrections and as you mentioned in the book it is of different reasons but for people to claim it disproves the total package seems a little bit over exaggerate. But it’s fun discussing these topics. I’ve got one so called “debunk” as they called it: ‎”In Example 2, in Surah 42:21 of Arabe 328a (7th century), he states that "له" was corrected to "لهم" by a later scribe. However, "لهم" is present in similarly dated manuscripts such as Is. 1615 I and Or. 2165 (shown below), thus showing it was most likely accidental.”

  • @variantquran4505

    @variantquran4505

    Great question/comment. You probably noticed that in my book I never spoke of disproving the preservation of the Quran. Other people may project such a purpose onto the work, but a scholar does not set out with a pre-determined outcome or conclusion, but rather to test a hypothesis by asking questions in the context of good research design. So, no, I am not trying to disprove preservation, or to prove it. I am seeing considering what the corrections and variants tell us. Secondly, my little book was not a scholarly argument but rather an introduction to the existence of corrections with some examples. So, again, anyone who might think that these 20 were intended to somehow constitute a robust and coherent scholarly argument will have completely misread my explicit and implicit purpose in that book. Indeed, it is one of the mistakes made by Sidky in his review. Now, to the thing about Example 2: Whoever wrote that sentence is engaged in slightly flawed logic. It is indeed possible that the initial writing was accidental, perhaps likely. But "most likely" (if we are considering only the fact that two other manuscripts of similar time show the other form) is a little lazy, in my opinion. DB
