DPF regeneration with VCDS

This is how to perform diesel particulate filter regeneration,
both while driving and with Vag-Com Diagnostic Software (VCDS).
Performed on Audi A4 B8.
DPF Regeneration can be done in 3 ways:
1) Passive regeneration while driving. This occurs primarily at higher engine loads, when the exhaust gas temperatures are high enough to burn off soot (350-500 degrees C). 60km/t, 2000rpm, at least 20 minutes.
2) Active regeneration while driving.
As soon as a specific soot load in the filter has been measured (above 18g), the ECU initiates a post-injection of additional fuel into the combusion chamber, to help raise the temperatures and burn off soot in the filter.
1. happens without intervention of the ECU.
2. is normally done when the 1st process is incomplete or aborted (usually when frequently driving short trips, not long enough for the DPF to reach optimal temperature and burn clean). You can sometimes hear the active regeneration, because the exhaust sound changes to a more 'deep droning'. The RPM at idle also increses by 150 (i.e. from 800 to 950 RPM).
3) Forced service regeneration when stationary.
This can only be done with software, like VCDS.
I only do the 3rd option if the soot mass measured gets above 24g, and Im not able to do a long trip. It's not recommended to do a forced regen unless necessary, because the extra fuel beeing injected can dilute the engine oil, therefore an oilchange is desireable after forced regen.
40g soot is the upper/critical level for forced regeneration. If the soot mass exeeds 45g, regeneration is no longer possible and the DPF must be replaced.

    Hi, i have a 2007 a4 b7 and sometimes the glow plugs blinks. I recently bought the car so i dont know if it means that is doing a dpf regen. No other warning light turns on. Should i worry? Also the pedal is not that responsive. Thanks, please respond.

    Its most likely emissions related, like a bad sensor or a faulty EGR. You should scan for codes. Get VCDS or buy a cheap OBD2 scanner if you dont have one.

    Hi, according to VCDS my calculated soot is 16grams and measured 3 grams. Which one is more accurate, measured or calculated? Because it also gives the fault code dpf clogged.

    The calculated value is set by the ECU, its just a prediction. Measured value is based on difference in air pressure before and after the DPF.

    The access code you hit, in (16 - security access) is either adaptation enabling or Basic setting enabling. Anyway, its not important. Just hit the code you see to get access.

    hi, you question pls.When driving mode, is it must to be connected to software or just drive above 60-70kmh, on 2000rpm

    The limit is 45g I believe. Above that the dpf has to be replaced

    The limit in 90 And you cam make a regen on road with VCDS.

    You mean when showing measuring data? Try searching for 'particle' Then you should see both soot mass measured and calculated

    Hola buenas, cuando intento entrar a acceso de seguridad, al meter el código me pone: controller refused to send a sed, service not supported in active session. Sabes como podría solucionar esto? Un saludo y gracias
