One can say IMAX is VISTAVISION for 70mm film IMAX increases the resolution of the image by using a much larger film frame. To achieve this, 65 mm film stock passes horizontally through the cameras. Traditional cameras pass film vertically. 65 mm film has an image area that is 48.5 × 22.1 mm (1.9 ×0.87 in) (for Todd-AO), in IMAX the image is 69.6 × 48.5 mm (2.74 × 1.91 in) tall. In order to match standard film speed of 24 frames per second, three times the length of film moves through the camera

IMAX is 70mm, but 70mm is not IMAX, meaning that IMAX is just a type of 70mm format. Picture film stock, celluloid with holes along the edges, and wide frames in sequential order top to bottom, 70mm frames are about 5-8 holes "high" or "tall", IMAX is 15 perforations WIDE, meaning that the frame is actually recorded sideways(if you were to hold the celluloid vertically, the frames would run right to left going downwards. Also 70mm is actually closer to 65mm, since audio takes up physical space.

It would be interesting to hear their take on film vs. digital video and 15/70 Imax film now, while Oppenheimer is in theaters. We’ve had a lot more education about Imax film in the mainstream public than ever before with Christopher Nolan’s epic work. The 4K that Samsara was reduced to sounds like it pales in comparison to the virtual ~18k that 15/70 Imax can achieve, at least in regards to the numbers of virtual pixels in the images. Samsara being shot on 5-perf 65mm could look better if transferred to real film and shown in a 70mm theater, except that it was digitized and edited in 4k digital rather than the full potential of a possible ~12k that 5-perf 70mm could possibly display. All theoretical though without actually being able to see it.

With full respect to these masters. I hope they continue with film and not video cameras. Fans (like me) can spot video. Film is truth. Their work has been a Bible of truth for me and some effects and animation artists. Do not go video. Don't!

Samsara was one boring flick. So much worse than Koyaanisqatsi.
