Double wishbone suspension geometry | Designing | Calculation | Hard points | Camber vs wheel travel

Double wishbone is the independent type of Suspension geometry that allows each wheel to act and react independently from the others. Designing of double wishbone geometry involves various assumptions and approximations. So, here I will be covering almost all approximations involved in designing the suspension geometry. Adjusting relative angles and length of control arms, you can design a perfect suspension geometry for your vehicle. After getting all the hard points from 2d sketches, put the coordinates of these hard-points in suspension software’s , to analyse the curves of different parameters and get a suitable suspension geometry .
In this video you will learn :-
1) What is Double wishbone geometry?
2) Construction, designing and calculation of Double wishbone geometry?
3) Effect of Control arms on handling characteristics of vehicle.
4) Study of Camber versus wheel travel Curves

Hello, the mounting of pushrod on UBJ or LBJ depends upon where the forces are maximum between the two. So can you please tell me that how do I get my maximum forces on UBJ intentionally so as to mount the pushrod on UBJ?? P.S- Very good content as usual.

The control arm diameter is open for your preference. You have to consider material, and its properties, and the particular use. You also have to take into account the cost. .048" wall thickness would be a good start. After you engineered the part, then off to FEA analysis.

There is a mistake on case 2. The outer tire will gain NEGATIVE camber when the body is rolled, not positive camber, and the opposite is true for the inner wheel. This makes alot of sense if you think about it, as when you're rolling, the LBJ connection on the body on the outside wheel is going out towards the wheel while the UBJ is going inwards, making the wheel have to rotate inwards towards the body (negative camber) in order to maintain the length of the suspension arms, the opposite is true of the inner wheel

There is a formula for calculating the correct upper A-arm length. I read it years ago in an engineering book, but haven't been able to find it again. You start with the lower arm, built to whatever length. The height of the lower arm above the ground, the length of the lower arm, and the height of the upper arm all go into the equation. I just can't remember what functions to use or if there is other data needed. The end result is a pair of arms that produce zero scuff while giving the necessary camber gain.
