This song "Idées Noires" (Black Ideas) released in April 1983 is taken from his ninth studio album (his third for 80's) "Etat D'Urgence" (Emergency State), reaching 16th place in July of the same year and selling over 200,000 copies. While recording this title, Bernard Lavilliers is looking for a "female voice" but a chorister he knows doesn't give him satisfaction, judging her not "emotional" enough for his taste! It was his producer the day before during a dinner at the restaurant where he himself was attending that he told him about the singer Nicoletta who would finally be called the next afternoon to do some tests, to put her voice in the same key as the male singer. Three hours later, the title is finalized! Catherine Ringer is a national treasure. You should do the double-duo the Rita Mitsouko did with the Sparks, "singing in the shower". Banging 80's song and a super cool music video where all of Catherine's mannerisms are on full display. Lavilliers is a very cool guy too: he was a metalurgist at 15 years old, and later he always supported the French anarchist federation and he did many concerts in factories to support striking workers all along his career.

Very glad you (or some of your patreons) jumped on my suggestion for this double reaction;-) As mentioned at the time, Catherine Ringer’s vocal performance is awesome, she sounds somehow like a meowing cat, that’s really something.

Bernard Lavilliers a good choice and this song too .

I don't think one could top Nicoletta's depth of voice. Ringer took a completely different, personal stance. I can't say which version I prefer.

In all good honor,it's an very good song , in the first version with Nicoletta I did not understand your reaction because it's an excellent song, obviously it's with this version that I heard the first time. What is different from the sights of the sounds that were found in the 80 (synthé and often with saxo) in this song we find these instruments, Nicoletta brings with his voice a supplement of soul. Finally I understood with the version with Catherine Ringer, the arrangements are different (more jazzy )and the voice of Catherine more cozy, softer, so it's more intimate and more felted and for a younger person certainly more modern and to finish J ' Enjoys that the song did not let you indifferent and you rediscovered it in a different form. En tout bien tout honneur ,C'est une tres bonne chanson dans la première version avec Nicoletta j'ai pas compris ta réaction parce que c'est une excellente chanson, évidement c'est avec cette version que j'ai entendu la première fois . Ce qui est différents au point de vue des sons que l'on trouvait dans les 80 ( synthe et bien souvent avec du saxo ) dans cette chanson on en trouve pas ces instruments , Nicoletta apporte avec sa voix un supplément d'âme . Finalement j'ai compris avec la version avec Catherine Ringer, les arrangements sont différents (plus jazz) et la voix de Catherine plus feutrée , plus douce , c'est donc plus intimiste et plus feutré et pour une personne plus jeune certainement plus moderne et pour finir j'apprécie que la chanson ne t'as pas laissé indiffèrent et que tu l'as redécouverte sous une forme différente .

From Bernard you might want to watch his cover of "Avec le Temps" de Leo Ferre... Very deep and emotional song... And Catherine being in the public, can't stand the emotion overflow... (Her husband and music partner had died a few month before).

Le point positif dans la 2eme version c'est qu'il laisse plus de texte a la chanteuse, dans ce cas, Catherine. Cela fait défaut à Nicoletta et à la version des années 80, ce manque de parité dans la découpe du texte. Et oui, je suis d'accord sur le fait de préféré la voix de Bernard Lavillier avec quelques décennies de plus. Ca c'est si l'on compare les les 2 versions mais sinon j'ai toujours bien aimé la version d'origine. J'en garde un bon souvenir. Quand au clip psychédélique c'est qu'il est dans un backtrip car quoi qu'il fasse il ne peut oublier la blonde, dans la décapotable, morte décapité. Je redonne mon conseil de duo Catherine Ringer/Marc Lavoine "Qu'est-ce que t'es belle".

I like the small instrumental additions they did on the new (Catherine Ringer) version. It also has a better and smoother flow to it. And I agree the newer version seems to "go somewhere", whereas the older one is kind of resting in one place, musically. That said, I think they took away much of the "edge" of Lavilliers' earlier vocals - and especially the guitars. Whereas the older version was funky and exciting, the new one is a bit too smooth and "mellow" for my taste. Both very good though.
