Apparently, the movie wasn't finished during principal photography in 1967. When they got the money to finish it in 1972, the original actors weren't even brought back to film the new footage. That's why the space suits look different and have darker face covers. It would also explain that strange ending.

16:17 The movie...has that part right I think. If it's an airlock and they're not de-pressurizing the entire ship, then it's just the air in that particular room, so it wouldn't be a continuing stream of air. That one room full of air would leave the door quickly, leaving them in a vacuum but still in the room.

Fun Facts: This movie was shot in 1967, but they ran out of money and shelved it. About 5 years later they manged to scrape enough cash together to finish it. Except, the cast was long gone. So they hired two nobodies hidden in space suits to play the parts. You'll notice their voices and suits change after they leave the original ship. Also the ending was supposed to take place on Venus, but that wasn't in the budget either.

man, some Sci Fi directors really didn't understand the meaning behind the long cuts did Kubrick used in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's a simple rule guys: if you're going to make long cuts you have to make sure there's something that makes good use of the long cut. In the case of 2001: A Space Odyssey it was all about the experience, in the stargate scene it was the experience of both confusion and terror, and in the Blue Danube Waltz scene it was the experience of floating through space. And in these scenes Kubrick always made sure there was something worth watching to keep the viewers intrigued.
