Don't Use The Compressor For Side-Chain Ducking.. Do This Instead

Музыка

In this video I share how I do sidechain ducking on the Digitakt MK1 and most Elektron machines. This is a simple and incredibly powerful rhythm and sound shaping tool essential for multiple genres. This video is meant to teach you an alternative to using the Master Compressor on the Digitakt for side-chain ducking, in this example we will be exploring the LFO and working on a per-step basis.

    I think it is important to mention that a big difference between this technique and sidechaining is that with triggered ducking, when you mute the kick, the ducking continues, whereas with the compressor the ducking stoos when te kick stops. Creative choice.

  • @harveytherobot

    Definitely. In that case, I'd probably have at least two different patterns - one with the kick and the sidechain trigs and one without the kick and no sidechain trigs.

    I usually hate when the ducking stops when the kick is off. That's why in DAW I always have a sidechan running if I do ducking with compressor. Although in Ableton I mostly use Auto Pan for ducking.

    You can also create a sidechain compressor effect on your bass line using only midi. You start the bass note an octave or two higher than the bass note destination, but on the kick. Then turn on glide or portamento and let the bass note start on the kick and glide down to the note after your kick.

    But there is no portamento on DT? You use the LFO for that I imagine ? Or you mean with an external bass instrument sequenced from DT with audio into DT

    @@vagueversatile He says using Midi so he means with an external synth. But I still think his method is overly complicated. You can use the same method in the video but just set the LFO dest to a Midi CC controlling synth volume. Unfortunately my synth has 3 separate volumes knobs so only works with 1 oscillator.

    Very simple and useful indeed, but the problem with this is that using internal COMP, you have chance to set the internal Reverb PRE COMP, that in some context is a must have, feature that you haven't using the LFO per track. However it's really a good and surgical method, thank you :)

    I’ve been window shopping for a new drum machine, trying to find something comparable in form and function to my TR8S…..while the Digitakt isn’t exactly an apples to apples comparison of the TR8S, I believe it can achieve a lot of what the TR8S can do, but in a different way. Well done tutorial, and I think this has helped to make my mind up. Thank you.

    Why can't i do this technigue on a4 or rytm? They have also lfo and AMP volume.

  • @jesse154
    @jesse1542 ай бұрын

    @EZBOT Is there a method to doing this that allows you to duck and then release across multiple triggers that are not a simple 4 to the floor kick? For example what if the kick is on steps 1 and 7, and you wanted to use those points to duck a sound and make it release from there? The trigger setting on the LFO will reset for every trig and you cant get a gradual release sound. But alternatively if you use the free LFO setting, then its phase wont sync up with the desired trig points properly. Any workaround there you can think of?

  • @EZBOT_

    @EZBOT_

    2 ай бұрын

    Just select the trigger you want to have be a part of the ducking process and not ducking process. The Duck start point you lock the LFO trig on and the area you want to be duck you lock LFO off.
