In this rather subjective video, I show how removing distracting frequency ranges (low bass and high treble or brillance) can help you focus on the most vital part of the mix: the midrange. Which frequencies comprise of the midrange of the music is a matter of opinion, and in my opinion, it depends on the content of the music you are mixing when it comes to choosing the "midrange". Regardless of which exact frequencies you choose to listen to, if you can get the midrange of your music to sound good, then the rest is very easy to dial in.
00:00 - Intro
0:45 - Critical Listening
1:24 - Why Midrange is Vital
4:20 - EQ just the Midrange
10:30 - EQ the Full Range
12:39 - Setting Your Midrange…Range

Nice work antony. A good thing to note that helps your case is the effect of masking, not just masking of sounds at the same time and in the same range, but spectral masking which happens over a longer period of time and masks from the bottom up… so if your low end is too loud, its masks the low mid range, if the low mid range is too loud it masks the top mids, if the top mids are too loud it masks the highs. So by focusing on the mids, then balancing your lows against that perhaps can help people with lesser listening environments as they focus on what they can hear reliably first. The issues I hear more than anything with beginner/intermediate mixes is too much bass, so the mids are not mixed well, or too much mids, so the highs are not detailed enough. My 2c 🤘🏼

Glad I rewatched the video, got see this comment, this is also gold! :)
This video was a lightbulb moment for me. So much effort spent on the low end and the sparkle thinking that it was the most important element. Great tutorial. Subbed.

Likewise so many people so focused on the mix and effects and not the music.
I cannot recommend his mixing and mastering course enough. I've finally got my first freelance job for creating a radio advert and my knowledge of mixing helped tremendously. The discord community was super helpful as well. I've also managed to buy ableton live with the educational discount and basically got a course and ableton for just the price of ableton. Thanks Anthony ❤
Been watching everything you put out for some time now. This one I can see myself using immediately. Good stuff.
This was really informative and you explained it very well. Great video!
And just like that... an upgrade to my ears! Thank you.
I'm a totally new to the digital recording/mixing world and this is truly helpful ! You're not just showing the eq, but also sharing a process and explained why it makes sense. Thank you !
Probably the best and most direct tutorial I've seen in years. Straight to the point without unnecessary talk. Thank you!
Such a kind and knowledgeable guy. If you are looking to improve your production skills, I wholeheartedly recommend his courses. His chill teaching style makes learning the different categories a breeze.
some of the greatest mixing advice in the game right here, cheers!
thanks for re-reminding me of something I forgot. used this last night and got so much more punch and clarity with small efforts...
this is my all time fave tutorial on the internet!
Amazing video - immediately applied it to my mixes and all I can say is this will change your music life
Even after so many years of mixing this technique is such an eye/ear-opener. Thanks a lot!
Awesome, and very detailed advice. I can't thank you enough!
Thank you for making this! There is a lot of great information here and it is presented very concisely.
Love your breakdowns please keep it up ! Your videos always inspire me to get back into Ableton. I’ve gone in and out of creative phases but these educational breakdowns are just fantastic.
This is helpful information. Thanks. I’ll check out your mixing course
This was a fantastic little tutorial. Massive results in a few simple steps. Thank you my dude!
Really solid and practical advice! Thanks!
I do this on some individual sounds and busses too, great technique
Excellent tutorial, you really nailed how to properly monitor what matters, to polish your track, awesome man!
love that tutorial❤💯💯💯 thanks for reminding me of how important mid range is
Great vid mn 🙏🔥
Brilliant move. Thank you
Love this guy!!
Thank you, this is very useful!
Very helpful and well explained....thanx a lot for sharing your knowledge...kind regards
Wow, just thank you!
Loved his approach. This may also be helpful in the world of voice overs!
thank you for this mid journey, ;) quite brilliant actually
Nice directions / suggestions / tutorial. Goes without saying (unless somebody is reading comments BEFORE watching the video), BUT: your lesson is certainly applicable to any DAW, etc. So, even for those who aren't using Ableton, this is good info! Thanks for the sharing the knowledge with us!!
wow! this is really good
This was soooo helpful, genuinely learnt a lot. So simple/obvious but isolating the mids to hear them better... Not doing this is why my mixes have been sounding muddy af 😢
This is really good.
uh, I have to try this. Thanks Anthony!
WHAT A BANGER OF A TUT
great tutorial. makes sense. with less good headphones or studio monitors you can hardly hear a difference. or my ears are not trained enough
With how much production content there is now days, I was trying to figure out why you stand out for me. Because you're in Papadosio! Lol, great content & thanks!
Really an eye opener
This is a really cool trick!
This is indeed very true!
Gold underrated channel
Splendid
Thanks sensei. Way to drop them gold nuggets
damn you just blew my mind
great video!! i also have 3 of your courses.. they are great too!! peace.
thank you
Great video
Brutal !!!! ❤
LOL. Best way to focus on the mids is to get old and loose all the high frequency in your hearing. At 2.45 I hear no highs. Just the Bass. @ 71 I still like messing with music though.

Interested in your view on "mix cubes". One question re mixing in general. Seems to me that the sounds you are removing in low mids would be coming from Kick or sub bass instruments. Wouldn't it be better to EQ at instrument rather than mix? Reason being to avoid removing lows from other instruments. Also as to high frequency hearing loss, mine starts to reduce at about 1.5k and is gone totally above about 3-4k.
save that mid EQ preset as “NS-10s” 😂
Thanks
who else thought the track was cooler with all the midrange cut out?
Proud of you for making this amazing vid! Are there certain frequencies that you never really adjust? Like 500hz or 2.5k, 4k? I always hear people talking about 100hz, 250hz, 1k, 5k 10k, 16k etc
great video
Would you slap this EQ down before you put a mid/side EQ into the master rack? Thank you, super helpful tutorial.
Hey there ! I subscribed and watch your KZread vids, they’re so helpful !! I was wondering if there was any way you could re-make your video “Vowel redux bass tutorial with Ableton Live” now that there are newer versions of ableton & the redux effect works differently than in that video ! Or is there a Patreon or something you could teach me 1 on 1 with ? Thank you ! :)
god bless you
be carful cutting the "thud" can remove some "weight" from the mix
I think this could be a useful tip for identifying potential problems you might not be hearing as is. But I also think it's worth pointing out that this technique feels like it's coming more from a mastering perspective. It's good for finding a little more balance, but overall I think the issues could have been addressed more in the/ a mixing phase, and leaving a little less work for the/ a mastering phase. It's still a good point to make though; focusing more on the midrange than the low bass or upper highs. That said, I think the specific examples you gave in adjusting the EQ were all things that could have been solved ahead of time, potentially. With the exception of adjusting the highs at the very end.

You’re def right I think this kind of setup is much more useful in the mixing phase and I should have said that at the start. Oh well I don’t always plan these videos, sometimes they are off the cuff

@@SeedtoStage No worries. I'm glad to see you agree though. It's still an interesting technique that I'll be trying in the near future!
1000 - 2000 is very important to "in your face realism" feel.
My guy here does know his stuff. Not interested in the course, but if I were to recommend one or go take one myself, this is the bro I'd choose.

bro i have been debating whether or not to get it for a while now. while i do think i am at a level where it's not going to be 'enjoyable' to follow the curriculum (im guessing it's tailored for beginners) i still believe it could help me learn so much. a bit too expensive tho for sure lol
Mids are 400Hz to 4kHz. I always have a separate stereo buss EQ rolled off at those two points as a quick A/B for the very reasons this fine fella is speaking about. Solid tip.
Hi! What's the name of your headphones?
Wait, but if you use your EQ-ing methods with headphones (single speaker per ear), you should get just as good feedback as with mixcubes, right?
What is the difference between this EQing the mix bus and EQing the master bus? Is it necessary to EQ the mix bus before mastering?
You are the best!
Song started and I didnt gaf about the mix cuz it was a bop. Thats most people's issue, can't mix a bad song into being a good one
wow this is genius...i instantly applied this practice into a track that is near completion and its so much cleaner. brilliant. thank you sir.
Hello! Is this EQ Midrange approach useful for mixing of each separate track (stem) or better only for mastering of whole track (on Main)?
@SeedtoStage
Ай бұрын
It could be used whenever but I’d say it’s better for when your tracks are all separated because when you’re mastering youre listening for the cohesiveness of the entire track in full range. I just used a single track for simplicities sake.

@@SeedtoStage I think so! Thanx.
Are you using Audeze Headphones? Seems some kind of planar...
I could not hear a difference lmao. The mid-freq EQ made the mix sound subtly thinner but not enough that I have any idea about how it's improving the mix.
Why can we hear bass when the EQ is engaged for everything above 6k? I'm self-taught but have always wondered that happens.

I appreciate you explaining the “why”. You’ve certainly come closer to a concrete answer than most I’ve seen. Unfortunately, in the end, you can explain your reasons, but it all ends with “that sounds better to me.” 5:35 this is cool. I really wish I could hear the difference.

@@SeedtoStage haha funny! Thanks man actually a great video I will use this in my next mixdown to see what I can improve. About to create a template for the EQs now :)
seems like your eqing is just fixing a few mix issues with a few instruments in that section of the song and making the rest of the song worse.
@SeedtoStage

In general if you’re going to use this tactic, it’s preferable to still have your whole mix of broken out tracks to work with. Turn up a snare here EQ a guitar there, etc etc This was for quick demonstration purposes.

This sentiment is why Mahogany is usually my go to tonewood - it acts as a natural EQ to round off highs and lows. You can really dig in and play loud without distorted overtones of highs/lows that diminish Polyphony, as well as also play delicately and still have full definition.

False : HUMAN EAR is midrange….
Hey bro. I'm Vegan.
I'm gonna disagree with the message of the video. If you don't like the core sounds in your song, eqing won't help
I mean isnt it common sense. The.mid range is where our ears settle. Dynamics of highs and lows should take you out of that zone then bring you back in.
Your eq moves ruined the mix
