Don't Ruin Your Wing Chun Training

Спорт

Someone asked me what I thought the biggest mistake in Wing Chun training is. Well, it's not necessarily a specific technique or training drill. Instead, it's a toxic philosophy of training - a flawed presupposition right out of the gate that eats away at one's proficiency.
From the student's perspective, the mistake is just wanting to learn the forms. I've had that quite a bit. A student comes to me and you can tell that they're in a hurry to learn Biu Jee and they think that it's Mount Everest. Of course, it's so much more than just knowing the forms and no student who thinks this way will ever get the best out of their training.
On the other hand there are two big mistakes that instructors make. The first is the hyper-traditionalist that accepts no individualization. They try to make every Mike Tyson into Ali or vice versa. On the other end, there's the error of just having guys spar or chi-sao all the time and there's too little attention given to technical fundamentals. Balance is key in all things, right?
In this video we cover all this. Check it out.

Excellent points. Having experience in other Wing Chun schools, I would also include too much Chi-Sao (excessive competitiveness, no footwork and just too much time practiced in a given class). Thanks to you, I visualize applications of the 3 forms and the wooden dummy every time. Thank you again for the high quality training.

A little idea, not a big application. By the way, you said the teacher's pitfall was bifurcated. Mental rigidity was number one. What was the other teacher's foible? Thanks. Thoughtful discussion. Teaching us with your wisdom.

Sifu can you make a video on wing Chun knock out power. Every thing I see on wing Chun is speed but no stopping power, like a 22 compared to. 45.I don’t know much about how powerful punches and kicks are developed in wing Chun because I never hear anyone talk about it.

That’s a good idea. I sort of covered power in the Chum Kiu video but you’re right, a stand alone video on that subject is long overdue. Thanks!

I was hoping for 'words of enlightenment' but got another koan instead.🤔 The correct application of wing chun is what makes wing chun work - simplicity, directness and economy of movement - emphasis on 'directness'. Too many students and outsiders look at wing chun as an efficient 'boxing style' with quick strikes. Until you 'feel the hands' (energy) of an accomplished wing chun practitioner like Sifu Jason - you'll never know the secret. A lot of people dismiss 'chi sao' practice as a 'fighting form' that many other kung fu styles have. In reality engaging in 'lively' chi sao develops the balance, energy and sensitivity for the correct application of wing chun technique. 'Shadow boxing' will only take you so far.

I love JKD. People ask why boxing is recommended for self defense and everyone says its practical ... Why? Because don't rely on kicks. No its all that infighting... And bridging skills. That's JKD. For self defense i use pure grappling out of sympathy but if i strike i used to be in a steert fighter club and JKD and street were the main styles that dominated in stand up. I learned tkd kung fu boxing ... I never liked thai or dutch. There was something about jkd. Its about that bridging using kung fu boxing or the principles bruce lee beoieved in specifically. Uou use gate blocks boxing street ... But its all about that skilled bridging when youre dancing or all that infighting. Infighting infighting infighting. People ask why boxing is recommended for self defense abd everyone says its practical ... No its the infighting. In a steeet svenario based on damage infighting is your best tool if you strike because of the damage and the lowered reactionary gap. Its just that simple. I like the more complex offense and defense compared to boxing ...but it doesn't hang out far away like thai dutch tkd. Out of those thought i like tkd. Why jkd isnt limelight no idea. You dont use thai for self defense. Youd use jkd or tkd or something. Especially jkd for infighting. My wing chun i appreciate it. It goes well with boxing instead of being separate. I like to use and train both power abd sensitivity/ speed. But i focus a lot on street too in it. I dont see why more people dont do it. They probably arent street fighting.
