Wing Chun Fighters Don't Understand The Centerline [Avoid This Mistake!]

Спорт

The center line. One of Wing Chun Kung Fu's core concepts. There isn't a Wing Chun fighter anywhere who hasn't been taught about the centerline in the early phases of their training. However, a lot of what is being taught about the center line is wrong and that can be dangerous if you find yourself in a self defense situation. Sifu Jason of Greenville Academy of Martial Arts will give you the do's and don'ts on attacking and defending the center line and reveal the big misconception Wing Chun students have about their martial art's most important principle.

    Comment from Tony Massengill: one of my greatest pleasures in life is watching my student Jason Korol teach the Wing Chun I have passed to him! I know .... I know, that doesn’t say much for the quality of my sex life, but in my defense, I’m an old man with a lot of injuries .... but I digress! Back to the subject of the post! The greatest pleasure a teacher can have is to see a student take the baton you passed to him and see him advance it to the next generation! I have been extremely blessed to have Jason as my student, friend and Christian Brother!

    Helpful as always. Your production style changed a little bit and it's interesting (I might've commented about this detail before but I can't remember), I really like seeing those glimpses of your classes, it's possible to see that what you say here in YT is a really abbreviated version of what you teach in your live classes. This approach to the centerline and considering the notion that your opponent won't just stand there and let you do whatever is a really important lesson to teach everyone. Looking forward to the next videos.

    Good video, most people dont really understand this. Even the explanation of the trap whilst going backward with spring energy is very valuable. I have been doing this for so long in my sparring and it lands the cleanest hits since your opponent probably doesnt expect it. Like sure stepping of the centreline at an angle isnt what we want to do since it is not the most direct route to our targets. Also we want to off balance or turn out opponent and hit. But we are not always in trapping range, often we need to bridge and just going forward especially with chain punches makes it very easy to counter. In that case we want to step off or in at an angle. I always tell people staying in front of them means they have 2 weapons, staying at their side like at an angle they momentarally can only use one hand and at their back they momentarally have no hands to defend.

    Well said! I have always felt the most important concepts in functional martial arts for the idea of "centerline" were positioning yourself so that the majority of your weapons were able to be trained on your opponent and his were not (i.e. getting "off line ") and secondly to attack and control your opponent's skeletal structure (his center line) so he has no stability and is easily moved or taken down and does not have the foundation to launch an effective attack.

    I have been sceptical of wing chun, or at least this ''snobbishness'' which youve mentioned, its really great to hear and see a similar fighting model( if not exactly the same) as boxing and other forms of combat. I like the distinction you made about Traps. It seems that wing chun, boxing and any other martial art is really the same set of mathematical rules given different names.

    Agree, My biggest problem in wing chun is when you do the drills the pause at the end of a drill to me is a problem. Example: Someone punches and other person paks/punch...but then they pause and pose. Working drills to learn technique is great. But it also trains something bad into your reaction. It causes you to pause after an initial punch. Instead of learning to be fluid and continuing. But I understand its just a drill. But like look at people in background training. Thats what I mean. They do their drill and then freeze into their final position. That causes hesitation. Maybe instead have them do the drill but following thru with whatever comes to them in the position the end up in. But have the first movement the actual drill but make sure they can save themselves if that punch falls flat.

    Wing Chun techniques are excellent for close quarter combat in tight spaces. Not so effective when the opponent has room to move or high level grappling occurs. That's why you see so many masters getting beat by MMA fighters. I believe Bruce Lee understand this early on and added the missing pieces.

  • @Vscribe
    @Vscribe3 жыл бұрын

    I see a lot of videos like this, and unfortunately, no matter how sound the conceptual thinking, I always see things fall down in the same area- you have wing chun people learning how to use wing chun against wing chun attacks. No one is going to attack you like a wing chun person, not even wing chun people when they actually try and fight, just check any clips of wing chun actually people sparring- those movements go out the window because they are not practical in their essence. Getting off the centreline when hooks are coming at your head is a whole different story. And no one just drops their arms below their chest for you to "attack the centre line." Plus, attacking the vital organs on the centreline just doesn't make sense, because your not going to stop someone's heart, lets say. Now don't get me wrong, I've trained Wing Chun for over 10 years and I love it as a system of body mechanics, and for its principles of understanding how to use your structure, but those movements of wing chun vs wing chun do not train you to deal with how people actually fight, which is not like wing chun people touching hands to learn a technique like Bruce Lee vs the big dude in the enter the Dragon. And its a big reality in Wing Chun that barely ever gets addressed.

    Also wing chun people (and I think every martial artist, mma, boxer, w/e should learn WC) need to lengthen their punches to boxing length (like jkd does). I throw my punches straight down centerline but by turning my torso/hips/shoulders on the centerline to generate power, like the 1inch punch in wing chun. I see too many WC peeps train to punch with their legs and body but in a fight they just throw arm punches "windmill punches" people call them. It's really because training for combat was outlawed in the Qing Dynasty of China until 1911. Wing Chun punches used to look a lot more like GOOD boxing punches but after hundreds of years without sparring, this is what we're left with

This shit definitely works, its not the ultimate defense by any means but it trains your mind and body to move to the path of least resistance every time. Ok, let's clarify the center line and why you get hit when you ONLY use the centerline, as opposed to using the CENTERLINE and CENTRAL LINE (the line in from the shoulder to the center at a 45 degree angle), as it is done in Traditional wing chun. The centerline only covers ONE SIDE of the body, since you do not rotate towards the attack, or use an angled step to the outside of the attacking arm. This happens because modified wing chun guys use LINEAR movement, straight in, which, as in ALL BOXING DERIVATES, leaves you vulnerable to the hook. This is because, without the rotation, the hook goes beyond your peripheral (side) vision, making it invisible until it is too late to stop!! Rotation towards the attack allows you to not only SEE the attack directly, but also pulls you away from the attack as well! Also, by rotating in towards the attack, you use the central line to attack directly down the center, which protects that side as well. This is why modified wc guys fail against boxers. They have the hook, and catch them with it when they are trying to foolishly use chain punches against them. Chain punching doesn't work here because the boxer or anyone experienced can just side step your attack to the blindside (the side of your advanced arm that is already extended), throw the hook, and the fight is over! CHAIN PUNCHING ONLY WORKS AFTER INITIAL CONTACT IS MADE, AND THE TYPE AND DIRECTION OF THE ATTACK ESTABLISHED, THEN YOU DETERMINE THE BEST WAY TO PROCEED, BE IT BY PUSHING THE ARM PAST CENTER, OR MAKING AND MAINTAINING CONTACT WITH THE ARM, FOLLOWING IN THE CENTER OF MASS (AS PER WONG SHUN LEUNG), TRAPPING THE ARM AND LEG, AND FINISHING THE FIGHT QUICKLY!

    But you really believe that WT can be effective for self defense in real situations? It is so complex.

    Even Boxing can be complex for a beginner. I don't know for long you've been practicing or interested in Martial Arts/Self Defense. But Sifu Jason's way of teaching is really practical and down to earth.

    I think you would enjoy Xingyi . No nonsense Kung Fu more powerful than wing Chun

    In defense of Wing Chun after not being allowed to spar or train for combat, for hundreds of years...ANY martial art would lose effectiveness. WC needs to evolve backwards before the Qing dynasty outlawed martial arts and they need to look at jkd/mma to round out their fighting

    Hey Simon, I've recently offered to take a challenge match to prove that Wing Chun can work in a limited rules combat scenario. Rokas, from the Martial Arts Journey channel issued a challenge for practitioners to prove that Wing Chun works. To be fair, Rokas just wanted video evidence but, I thought, it would be better to actually offer him a challenge match. I've posted my challenge on my youtube channel. Please check it out and show support. The more support I get, the more chance the challenge match will happen!!! If you subscribe, please leave a comment, so that I can reply. Cheers!!!
