Bruce Lee's Deadliest Technique

It seems rude to point out, almost like bringing attention to the finely dressed woman at the party, replete with the best fashions, that she has something stuck between her teeth. But the vast majority of martial systems today are suffering from a glaring weakness. And, lest you think that by vast majority I am merely throwing words around, and the problem isn’t all that bad, be certain that 99 in 100 martial artists are suffering from this. And this may even be a generous, soft-peddling of the problem.
The problem, for the most part, is that martial arts have gone the way of martial sports. Some have eschewed the primacy of attacking and defending the body’s weakest areas for the idiotic sake of complexity too - they just think other stuff is more cool, which is like a man getting attacked in an alley by a gang and whipping out his trusty nunchucks instead of a Glock 9MM because the aforementioned rice-beaters are way cooler. Such is the insanity of a man throwing a reverse kick rather than an eye-jab.
It’s these twin terrors that have utterly decimated modern martial arts from being what a martial art was and is meant to be: a fighting system, instead of a cool martial athletic club. And that’s exactly what most schools are because they’re focusing on things that aren’t essential to all-out fighting. What is? Well, for goodness sake, it’s scientifically attacking and defending the softies - the eyes, throat, groin, shins and knees.
Now listen, I’m sure this is going to offend many out there because we all have our favorites, but this isn’t about a match in a ring or a cage or even a sparring match at the school on any given Wednesday night. This is about survival, pure and simple. If two thugs attack you, helter-skelter ambush style, throwing haymakers and looking to do serious damage and then stomp your head into the pavement after they knock you down, and you’re fighting with rules then you have a serious oversight impeding your success. And, remember, success and failure in this instance could very well mean life or death. So, I’m terribly sorry to have to throw some methods under the bus, but in the name of the truth and your safety, these things need to be considered.

    Eye gouging is great, but I think the deadliest is the throat strike. Whether a punch or elbowing the throat while in mount. Should only be used under threat of death or great bodily harm

    The eye jab is the longest reach you have where you're not using your feet. The eyes and throat are also the easiest areas of the face that can cause great damage without the need of using a lot of force.

    Trained in wing chun and wing chun do myself, as well as jiu-jitsu. I like that you don't put that overwhelming emphasis on conditioning the fingers to do full on strikes with maximum power. First, it's not needed, as the eyes are so delicate even a loose hair or a few grains of sand in them, applied with essentially zero force, can be disorienting and make them water, force them into squinting, and disturb vision. Second, because eye strikes can be very opportunistic, something people never seem to talk about. If I've got my hands on your face or neck, on your shoulder or chest, it's a quick trip up to your eyes and I'm already very close and well-oriented as to where I am and need to go. A quick few inches is a lot different from closing in from even a few feet away. If I merely rake my fingers or fingernails across your eye, you're going to feel it, and even if you can take the pain, you may well get disoriented, especially when your eye starts to tear up automatically. The usual discussion of a finger strike having to be hard enough to break a board and incredibly accurate at the same time is leaving most of the technique's potential unexamined.

    Sifu: I really enjoy your videos. I thought you might like to hear a story from my martial arts journey. I had a good friend, Terry, who taught me some JKD. One day, Terry was practicing eye jabs with his teacher, Dan Inosanto. Guru Dan threw about 100 rapid jabs at Terry's eyes. All of a sudden, Dan stops, looks at his fingertip and says "Gee, Terry, I didn't know you wore contacts." Dan then returned the contact lens that he had accidentally extracted from Terry's eye. That's accuracy. BTW: Although I live in California, I grew up in the South. I spent a couple of summers in Greenville and have relatives nearby. Hope to have an opportunity to train with you someday soon.

    Bruce Lee's method of delivering the finger jab was unique, yet only a handful of JKD instructors employ this delivery method. For whatever reason, Bruce did not share the Hammer Principle with any of his Seattle or Oakland students, but he decided to teach this principle to L.A./Chinatown student Bob Bremer. Bruce could "drop the hammer" from 6 feet away, and there was nothing his opponent could do to stop it. The Hammer Principle is culled from Fencing and involves dropping the lead hand just below the line of sight and exploding off the raised rear heel via the forward lunge.

    good video. you can raise high and jab down also to eye or body, even harder to see due to gravity. also, raise sideway and then go down or go straight.. or use the rear hand to jab after distraction. Important thing is to move or defend with higher guard or legs push kicks or blocks or kicks if there is counter attack before, while and after jabs and punches.

    Buy a pair of metal mesh goggles and practice fingerjabs in a sparring/self defense simulation bout. That'll train your accuracy in terms of what size you're aiming for and resisting opponent. Just, still use control and aim only to touch. I've seen those wee bastard goggles get bent in by repeated hard fingerjabs. So, always practice control.

    Hi there, I really enjoy watching your techniques. A quick question... I'm thinking of starting JKD in the near future. I did Wing Chun for 3 years but haven't trained a martial art now for a few years but still have the muscle memory of the Wing Chun. I'm now approaching 55 and am fairly fit and go to the gym. The question is is it too old to train JKD and get to a competent level compared to Wing Chun. I just feel I need to have more techniques in my fighting to cover different possible scenarios that aren't necessarily close quarter. I would like to get back to using kicks more and i think leg stretching is important to keep up as you age to try and stay more supple . Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

  • @JKDandWingChun

    @JKDandWingChun

    5 жыл бұрын

    CASTELL182 you’re definitely not too old to get started. And you’re right about stretching too - it’s an absolute must, especially as we get older. Anyway, just take it slow at first and stay as relaxed as possible. JKD is about being loose and snappy. A big mistake people make - at any age - is going too hard at first and then they get an injury. As we get older, of course, those pesky injuries take longer to recover from, so pace yourself smartly and you’ll be fine. Thanks so much for watching and good luck.

    In karate we use our thumb with palm strikes. Also eye jabs need good finger strength. I'd recommend beginners to hold up half and then full body weight then move up to walking on your fingers then push ups. Ofc you can definitely eye jab with minimal effort but the strength in your fingers matter. When your fingers tense up during these workouts stop and work on something else to avoid damage to your fingers. Tendons take awhile to build up and are not muscles think of them as cables that can't operate on their own. After awhile you can actually poke people in the throat with your fingers. This is where snake kung fu bears it's style. Hitting the eyes then the throat. Also you'd made this video strangely after i was making my very own martial art lmaoo

  • @JKDandWingChun

    @JKDandWingChun

    4 жыл бұрын

    Roscoe Barnes III finger pushups are the best way to develop the strength you need. The eye jab is literally that - a jab. If you develop the requisite speed and accuracy even if you miss and strike bone you should be ok. The idea is to not thrust. That could break a finger if you miss. As for the throat strike - YES! That should be executed with a little more drive though. We classify that as a spear rather than a jab. Great questions and thanks for watching.

    "basic physics" yes.. in terms of force, speed and mass are directly related. That means a train engine going 30 mph hits with more force than a corvette going 100 mph. A typical train engine car is at least 10* more massive than a corvette... to do the same damage, a corvette has to go at least 10* as fast as the train engine... hell even bruce lee said a smaller fighter will have to punch faster than a big fighter in order to hit as hard in his book.

Your style with straight fingers jab has longer reach. Wrong Bruce Lee's deadliest technique shown is the guillotine choke in Way of the Dragon. Even if the choke was incorrectly executed, it was by far his deadliest technique ever shown, besides his legendary nunchaku strikes to the head. And your move eye poke jab shown is neither quick nor strong enough to kill a person so it cannot be the deadliest. And you would break your fingers doing the technique full force and speed on a makiwara.
