Here’s another one. How about crapping at home before you go to the crag? It’s pretty disgusting to find piles of human poo behind boulders. And ladies, if you need to wee and use toilet paper, why not take the paper home with you in your rubbish bag?

I would recommend using a sanitizing wipe and then having a little ziploc bag to put the wipes in when you're done using it. Sanitizing wipes are more efficient than having a whole roll with you, and the ziploc bags keep from getting your bag all gross.

What triggers me most are a climbing schools or really big groups. They usually take 4 best lines of 10-12 available and keep ropes in them for whole day. Better ones let you top-rope on their ropes when any of clients don't want to climb it but don't dare to want actually lead it.

@@Destort That really isn't the solution. True story from the February from our ice climbing trip. We woke up in 5am to be on place in 7am (with first light). I find big groups or schools only slightly annoying because can understand why they exist. What really annoys me is when these big groups set up 8 topropes for 12 people and then many of the climbs are blocked for hours without anyone climbing on them.

Meshi. Meshi Talk to them... I’ve taught climbing for over 30yrs and have always prioritised other users... it’s really easy to just work around each other and even at busy crags I’ve hardly ever had an issue... if climbers arrive when I’m leading a session I normally go to meet them as they arrive (be proactive)... ask what routes they want to do... explain our timings (normally the actual climbing bit with groups is only an hour or so)... discuss how we can share lines and mutually exist... if need be change our plans... we can always still meet our objectives... I think it’s a huge point of learning for group sessions sometimes to make way for a climber doing their own thing... crag etiquette should be taught from the outset.

My dog (he’s a very gentle whippet who doesn’t bark or get excited), was in his bed at the crag in Squamish and this hig aggressive dog came over to him and attacked him! Almost killed him! My guy would have died if I wasn’t 1 meter away and able to pull the big dog off him in 3 seconds! I rushed my guy to the vet with a 6cm hole in his neck and they saved his life. I’ve seen so so many dogs that the owner thinks is “nice” and “doesn’t need a leash” come over to my dog and won’t leave him alone and just fuck off. My dog actually doesn’t need a leash because he sits beside me the whole time. But I STILL put him on a leash if there’s anybody at the crag besides us. And aggressive, rambunctious, barking dogs should be left home! Not brought to the crag.

@@jimmyday656 This dog owners problem seems to be widespread, it is always the same story they think based on how the dog behaves with THEM and when THEY are around that it is "ok" to let it roam nearby them. It is not ! Dogs behavior changes exponentially when the distance that separates them from their owners increases. I am a trail jogger and i am thankful there are rules posted "All dogs must be on leash" and many still violates this. I've summoned many dog owners with reports to be fined. They usually all see the problem, they know that their dog is not perfectly safe but don't care. Now i run with a military knife or bear spray that i will not hesitate to use if attacked by a dog. And even if the dog only wants to 'play' that is not ok, when a large dog comes at you, you have no way of knowing its intention (which can be vicious. Attacking dogs don't bark) and the fright alone should be fined to the dog owner.

They didnt even touch route A-B for about 2 hours, but left all that gear there as if they were actively climbing those routes. I am a big abuser of rule 9 here. My hands sweat profusely and i have to chalk up while climbing quite a bit. I always feel bad about it and try to brush it off while im repelling down if i can.

Two more important things: - Please don't climb with dirt on your climbing shoes! The grippy texture of footholds will last much longer, especially on limestone - If theres a sling or litte cord in the first bolts, don't climb on the route. It's a project of someone who paid for the bolts and did all the work to create that route

Common sense seems to be the big lesson here since, we've seen exceptions to most of these rules. - Chill/well trained dogs are fine off leash - Music being fine if you get permission from the people around/ you are the only people around - When you're projecting a hard route everyone tends to spitball ideas on how to send which results in beta spray. - Parking gets dodgy once the lot is full. Suddenly there's no rules and anything goes. But, if you're leaving trash (or shit) at the crag. There's literally no excuse outside of negligence. Try to do your part and clean up after others even.

Cleaning climbs should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Sure on some brand new ultra hard route carefully remover dirt and vegetation. But to see noobs trying to scrub the lichen or the patina off the rock 🤬 Chalk can lifted with a slap of the hand or item of clothing, sleeve etc.

  • @mikerowland8004

That was talking about cleaning off tick marks which even the BMC encourages. Not cleaning new boulders of vegetation. Absolutely, that should be left to those that know what they are doing or under the watchful eye of those that know what they are doing. We have to remember as climbers that it's not just our playground and leaving nasty chalk marks all over the rocks is unsightly to many and could end up causing us access issues if we don't look after places and people complain. Same goes for other issues in this video, considerate parking, crapping at the crag, litter and noise. I know climbers aren't the only ones that do this but we are easily singled out and blamed so we have to try to be better than those others that do most of the other things. Unsightly chalk is sadly our bag though. I think NOT climbing on wet rock needs to be a big one too. I don't think that I'm disagreeing with you, just fleshing out what you said.

One more: be cognizant of other people trying the same route. How many other people are trying that route? Are other people projecting it and close to sending? If yes, then their redpoint attempt takes priority over your working attempt. Don’t hog a route for 40+ minutes working the beta if there’s other people trying to redpoint it. Come work it another day when it’s not busy. Some considerations around this: how many hours before it gets dark or in the sun? How many other people are trying it? What’s the temperature (if it’s freezing and you take forever, then the person trying to send that day will get too cold). Be aware of other people and don’t try a hard project for the first time when 3 or more other people are doing redpoint tries. Sometimes to mitigate this, just go work beta on HALF of it on one try, and do the beta for the other half another try. Or if someone is trying to send and it’s their project, tell them “whenever you’re ready to go, let me know and I’ll come down”. Redpoint takes priority over working beta

I’m all for communicating with and accommodating other climbers. But the idea that one persons attempt takes priority over another another’s because of the level they are climbing at is pushing it. Probably keep that attitude to yourself (have been there) or risk a further break down in etiquette and decorum (be told to f*** off)

  • @SteveTownshend

demos360 it has nothing to do with the level you climb. I’ve been to crags more times then I can count where 3 people are all doing redpoint tries (ie. one-fall either at the crux or even after the crux. A “try” usually taking 2 to 10 minutes) on a route they’ve all put significant time and effort into, and then some random person who’s never been there decides that they want to get in line to try it for their first time and they go bolt-to-bolt for over and hour (and sometimes closer to 2 hours). It’s rude, and disrespectful of the other people there. The new person needs to be aware of their surroundings and respectful of others. That is standard etiquette. I’ve seen this as an observer when I wasn’t involved many times, on 5.12’s, 13’s and 14’s. The grade or how “hard” someone climbs isn’t relevant. It has nothing to do with the stronger climber having priority over the weaker. And if you read that in my comment then you misunderstood what I said. Sorry. You don’t just get on a route at your limit, taking an hour or longer when there’s people (maybe much weaker than you) who’ve put in time and are trying to redpoint. I’ll take it one step farther and say, even if nobody is close to redpointing, you STILL need to be cognizant of how long you’re on a route, depending on how many other people also want to try it (regardless of grade or how strong anybody is). If one other person is trying it, then obviously you can each take much longer. But if 6 people are trying it, then don’t take an hour on the route. If you need that long to work the beta (going bolt-to-bolt and taking 20+ tries to sort out beta and specific sequences and individual moves between bolts), then come back another day when it’s less busy. PS. I never said one person gets priority because of the level they’re climbing (because they are stronger than someone else). I don’t think that, and hence I’d never say that. I treat everybody with equal respect all the time. I don’t care if someone climbs 5.10 or 5.15. I don’t judge someone based on how hard they climb. And I really don’t like that attitude that’s so prevalent in many sports. I’ve been doing this shit way to long to care how hard someone climbs. Are they a nice person? That’s all I care about. When I personally try a route I know is near my limit, I expect the first time will take me over an hour, and I likely won’t even do all the moves. I would NEVER think to take that long on a new route if I see that there’s someone else going for redpoint. If it was only one other person, I always ask how long they want to rest, and tell them that I’ll go up but am happy to come down as soon as they’re ready to try again. They take priority over me if I’m working the moves and they are redpointing.

Besides "spewing beta" non stop how about non stop encouragement no matter if the climber is not struggling - "you got this, breathe through it, nice" and so on like a talking doll with a pull string. Another one is be careful about engaging a belayer from another party in a lot of chit chat. It does not inspire confidence in the person climbing hearing their belayer having a in depth conversation with some stranger. Likewise if you see someone climbing what would be very easy for you do not assume they are not totally gripped. They may not want anyone from any other party asking any questions no matter how simple or short. Anyway at least check it out with the climber if they are ok with you carrying on a conversation while belaying. Here is another one. Before just jumping on a climb that is unoccupied when you first get to a crag if there is a party right next to it ask that party their plans. They might be just about to finish a climb and were moving to that climb next. It is not like strangers in a grocery store check out line or freeway driving. Pretend like you might see that party again somewhere. Similar are big parties that get to a crag and try to reserve all the climbs they plan on doing for they day by laying out their gear by each climb they intend to do even if they might not get to it in plenty of time for others to climb it and move on. Showing up to a crag with 8 or more climbers in a party is uncool in my book. I have seen numerous groups of a dozen or more. NOLS instructors try to be considerate about it usually.

If you HAVE to shit at the crag (try to go at home/campground before you go climbing), then walk FAAAAAAAAAAAR away, make sure you go where NO human will EVER accidentally stumble upon it, and BURY it!!! Do not leave toilet paper out ever! (Ladies, this includes you peeing)! Bury it or pack it out in a plastic bag. Never ever ever left where it is visible. And never go within 100m of the base of any cliff, even if there’s no climbs there (yet). Somebody might want to develop new climbs right there. I’ve seen some amazing undeveloped tufas with tons of shit below them, and seen/smelled crags destroyed from the sight of toilet paper and awful overpowering smell! 🤢🤮 Ceüse is an example of somewhere full of shit and toilet paper. It’s disgusting.

please, don't bring your dog at the crag, The dog is not a human being, and I really hate being owners pretending their dog is listening to etiquette topics. a dog is a dog, and does his job. That is not compatible with the crag and the users o it. The dog barks, smells, tastes, poos and pees and more on. It's his nature. Don't get him away from his nature. Don't bring it at the crag. @@EMoritzxD I tell you this: one day at a local crag where I used to live I was belaying my partner and one dog arrived, smelled my rope and peed on it. I could not do much but keep on belaying, and pass the wet rope through my grigi and... not really enjoying the moment! No big deal, but, you know...it has not been a nice moment. I had a discussion with the owner, but the discussion was meanless: the dog did what mother nature suggested him to do, and even the nicest owner could not do anything about this. The owner btw felt really uncomfortable for the situation, and offered me to buy the rope as if it was new. Really a nice guy. But this is not the solution to the problem, the problem stays on another level, because the dog will do it again, or will be punished to avoid other future issues. Two bad solutions. This is just a "nice story", but than you have unrespectful owners, stupid dogs ("stupid" means: behaviours that don't match with other climbers needs), people who are afraid of dogs, people who are allergic... I don't know: if I had a dog, I would never go to a crag with him where there might be other people. It's just a metter of respect.

Don’t top rope trad routes, you’re ruining them for people that can actually climb. Trad is more dangerous than sport and the extra polish that top roping brings can result in a trad climb becoming excessively dangerous. Also, if you have to abseil down the same line try to go easy on your feet for the same reason. Trad is about on-siting, if you’re not comfortable with that maybe go to a sport crag or get someone else to lead.
