Don't go to Charters Towers

In this episode, we head to the North Queensland town of Charters Towers in order to discover the bright, shiny secrets lying just below its surface and try to figure out exactly what draws people to such an arid, uninviting hellhole.

    Me and a few friends went to Charters Towers for a drive and to do something different. We were all in the Army at the time and just drove into town when the police started to follow us around till we left the towns limits, strange people and place is all I can say. This was way back in 1986 :}

    Funny, but some sad moments, particularly that poor horse. I mean wtf does a horse need to be hobbled like that!😡

    Drove through there last week heading from Cairns to Darwin for the second time in three weeks. There heaps shittier places as you head west. Cloncurry has a saving grace with possibly the best pastie I’ve ever had.

    I think Charters Towers was named the World because at the height of it’s gold rush, the world price of gold per oz was somehow linked to the town’s production? Not sure if true but was told this when visiting the Towers.

    After years stationed at an Army base outside Oakey, I vowed never to venture west of Ipswich again. Unless you want to breed cattle and rugby league players, there is zero reason to go west or northwest.
