Don't go to Stanthorpe

Bad places exist. Good places exist. And heavenly places? Boy, you better believe they exist. They might be hard to find, but I went and bloody found one! Why shouldn't YOU go to Stanthorpe? Because it's mine. Go bother people somewhere else.

Fun fact: the fact that Australia was too useless as a collection of states to get together on a single rail gauge is actually what made it super hard for Japan to move any of their gear around if they had made a meaningful ingress in WW2, it actually forced them to redesign their entire invasion strategy.

I get up to Stanthorpe a few times a year. I stay with a friend bought 60 acres of mostly pristine forest with a massive granite outcrop overlooking the house, and another in her front yard looking like the head of a sleeping dinosaur, almost as big as the dwelling. I love exploring the forest marvelling at the native ground orchids and other wildflowers.

@@DONG-TOTO Toowoomba, I need a critique of it's brown creek that runs through the middle peppered with shopping trolleys. Question why Tbar has the largest Insane asylum in the southern hemisphere, and perhaps a test of it's native landmark food "Super Rooster". Or the ultimate insult. How it's new airport was almost referred to as "West Brisbane" because no one knows where this Toowoomba place is. I've got a few more little gems.. Like when its Ex Mayor Di Thorley spent millions putting in a sewage system that recycles the water and pipes it back into the water supply, decided to after having built it ask the general public if they'd like to drink their on shit water.. Surprisingly Toowoomba residence said no. Oh if you need religion we've got thirty flavours of Christianity esp in the southern part of the town. There's even that cult down the range the "Magnificent meal movement". When Tbarians want to unwind they go to the best part of Toowoomba, Highfields located outside Toowoomba, primarily to the Chocolate cottage and the Danish flower art shop. There I've done half of it for ya ;)

@@DONG-TOTO As someone who's lived there most of my life, it's partly the fact that Toowoomba is always past over for funding of decent infrastructure. Being a liberal party stronghold, there's no incentive for any politician to do anything the voters always vote liberal so the libs don't have to try and labor doesn't bother because it's never going to win. Things like not having an electric rail link to Brisbane for example or that we went through 3 successive governments trying to get just 1 tunnel down the range as the existing road was inundated with cattled trucks 24/7 and the road was being crushed by them. (Brisbane has how many tunnels now?) Speaking of trucks they use to travel right through the middle of town all the way up Tor / James st which made Toowoomba permanently smell like cow shit. And use to physically shake the little shop my wife worked at every 3 seconds or so. There's only retirement homes and churches here. Everything for young people has been shut down, like the Gaming Arcade, the laser tag, the willow springs waterslide was turned into a plant nursery ffs! Because Toowoombas main function is an agricultural hub for all the Farmers to come into town to do business, when they retired they couldn't manage the land but wanted to be close to family, thus the glut of old people here, Everytime I left Toowoomba I was amazed by how much more young attractive people there were outside Toowoomba. One good thing it use to have (20 years ago) was an awesome night life, Weekend came and the town had the young folk come in to get drunk and laid there was people groping, fighting and hooning, pissing and laughing, the Tatts, the high court, Shamrock down ruthven st went off!, and when they all closed round 2am you could go over to Rumours and it was your last chance to pickup but you never did and then at 4am you'd throw up and go home.. good times.

@@DONG-TOTO Sorry I've thought of some more stuff you might need: Did you know Toowoomba has the highest density of millionaires per square km? Suburb breakdown: Wilsonton: Middle class bogans Rockville: Housing commission meth heads (streets named after types of alcohol) Harlaxton: Housing commission thats been Gentrified Mt Lofty: upper middle class methheads Cotswold Hills: Rich people from the 80's that's why the houses look that way Prince Henry Heights: Properly rich people live up there right near there expensive little private school East Toowoomba: Rich people that have kids go to the other rich kids school, Grammar South Toowoomba: Middle class blue collar workers Harristown: Where the rest of us end up going to school, and learning why being poor sucks Darling Heights: The location of the shittest university I've ever had the privilege of attending. Moderators who don't speak English, units repeated in one course as fillers to make a bachelor degree Middle Ridge: Rich god botherers, nice suburb with too many churchy nutters Centenary Heights: Actually a good spot if you can get in being not rich and the school is pretty good. Rangeville: The place you go through to picnic point to get to third base with your girlfriend in the car. And then throw shopping trolleys off the edge of the range because why not? Drayton: The place that almost took the name of the whole city. Westbrook: It's new sort of, country folk living on the edge of town. Newtown: Home of the Meth heads favourite shopping centre Clifford Gardens Toowoomba City: a place the rarely changes because all those ugly buildings are "Heritage Listed" but that doesn't mean "Funded to keep them looking nice" Glenvale: The place we go through to see the sideshow when it comes to town. Mt Kynoch: Another place teenagers go to get pregnant Blue Mountain heights: Rich people who like the country feel but aren't actually country people. The people there are really friendly and genuine, but they can't drive for shit though, we have some of the worst drivers in Queensland I've been told! Old people constantly do 20Km below the speed limit, don't check their blind spots because their spine has fused their neck in one direction and take what feels like a lifetime just to turn a corner. And also the sort of place you can sit on your patio or verandah and watch the horizon and not feel it's a waste of time, or that you should be working. It's slow pace is charming but after a couple of years it can be depressing as the views of the locals are racist, myopic, conservative and utterly backward.
