With the Genestealer Cults and Adepta Sororitas Codex coming soon we need to talk about being box locked. The box-locked issue that affected Chaos Space Marines units like the Cultist mobs in Warhammer 40,000 10th edition could also affect the Sisters of Battle, Deathwatch and the GSC. It can hurt other factions too but they don't have an upcoming 40k codex.

1:16 bro you hit on some gold here. I absolutely despise the mono-pose modelling GW's gone with for modern (post-6th edition) kits where the model only has one pose but there's 69 individual pieces to glue together for that model. It makes zero sense, it would've been so much easier if they stuck with the prior method of 2 pieces for the chest, 2 arms and a set of legs with gear options. The old Space Marine tactical squad kit was a thing of beauty.

The conspiracy theorist in me would say that this is because GW do not want you kitbashing stuff. It's a loss in value for them for you pick up some janky 2nd hand abused old models, strip their paint, chop off some limbs and glue on the spares you had already. And god forbid you do that with (brace yourself) *3rd party bits*... All that is money not spent with them, and they hate that! Realistically, this might be a thing, but it's just as likely that the fancy 3d-modelled new models they make just don't allow for easy varied assembly options. Either way, it's quite a loss for us, and often leads to having to spend a LOT more than we'd want if we want to wysiwyg our models. If you want 3 5-man squads of scourges with any one special weapon you have to buy 15 kits... My advice: Unless you plan on playing big official tournaments, just build them how you can and state clearly before any game what each squad is actually equipped with.

Exactly. I have hundreds of old plastic Cadians with lasguns but no two look the same. Even a slight tilt of the head, a bayonet or a slight shifting of belt accesories clearly set two models apart without making them stand out.
Protip; if you want more MultiMeltas or a Multimelta from the basic sisters kit; snip the barrels off of the Meltaguns in the Sisters kit, and replace the flamer barrels on the heavy flamer. Looks good enough.

Same with the chain gun on Chaos Space Marines. I clipped the enda off thr heavy bolters and used the assault cannon end off the old Space Marine Land Speeder. But you can't get that model anymore.
Box-locking is tremendously irritating. It makes units like the Traitor Guard needlessly weak, since they end up not being able to do anything particularly well, and actively punishes people who make conversions- which used to be a central part of the 'hobby' side of the game. Making older character models practically unplayable because a new model came out with different weapons is even worse.

It's teh thing I don't like about modern GW. Really it started when 3d printing started to become mainstream but more and more they make box locked, monopose units that have so little variability between them you very quickly run into clones when you got another box. It's way more difficult to make unique models nowaday, especially for a beginner, and by design heavily discouraged. I also tremendously dislike the "DLC-like" mentality of GW the older I get. Give me my bloody minis with all the options and stop changing rules every three months or trying to bugger me into buying another 50 bucks box for 1 multimelta...

10:52 to represent an even smaller group, my GSC are kitbashed tau who are heavily converted, i spent a lot of time making proxy mining lasers, missile launchers, and webbers who all are posed to respect the weight of the weapon and the posture you would take to use them. This puts me in a position where I'll be putting models on the shelf and starting from scratch to make new conversions with extra seismics and flamers etc
I think the core squads kept their heavy weapons because it makes the heavy weapon squads basically upgrades for the basic squad, raising the average final sale price.

Smart. That's basically what happened to my first Retributor box.
They should really encourage kitbashing and varied loadout options more
Collecting space marines can be like this. It’ll say the Sargent can carry certain options and the box doesn’t come with these options.
This goes back to the Chapterhouse lawsuit. They don't want to have to deal with someone selling models for ones that have rules but no physical presence anymore. GW is doing this very much intentionally, they got stung once by a small company that actually stood up to them and are being over cautious.
For once, my tendency to prefer variety over efficiency might have shielded me. I often don't double up even when it's a possibility just cause "ohh, flamers are neat... but grenade launchers are ALSO neat..." Hooray for weird personal decisions that anticipate weird corporate decisions!

If you want to be extra careful then get some rolls of coloured masking tape, colour code your wargear choices and put a little strip of tape on the base. I'm not buying 12 boxes of scourges just to have 3x4 dark lances, there's enough long barreled options in that box to build it however the box allows, and if anyone doesn't want to play with me cause my stuff isn't wysiwyg then honestly screw that guy xD

I've been looking at starting a sisters army. But I'm really hesitant about doing that.
I hate that we have to keep thinking about this kind of thing. It's not enough that the point changes severely limit what weapons are useable at all... Horus Heresy looks so good as a system right now. Just give me 40k faction rules for that game and i will never look back
Already planned on magnetising my acolytes and building enough neophytes to have a decent spread of heavy and special weapons anyway. It’s always great to have your decision vindicated by our friendly neighbourhood vampire overlord
Forcing you to take different special weapons leads to one of worst outcomes imo in this game which is overcomplicating the shooting phase with multiple weapon profiles per-squad all with different strengths, ranges, keyword abilities etc. and still only being able to activate one unit at a time meaning you are doing the same annoying process of seperating out shots in a cycle for every unit. on top of that it's almost like having less unit options since like mentioned in this video, all of a sudden there's no distinction between the flamer/seismic squad and the grenade/laser squad, every neophyte unit will be equipped the same because it's the "best loadout"
In the US the missionary and preacher are easy to find on Amazon because I've got both fairly recently
Painting exclusive collectors keep winning. 🙌

I’m sure the marketing geniuses at Games Workshop understand consumer psychology better than I, however just you saying “11th” edition makes my PTSD act up. I didn’t really get into 40k at all until 9th edition, and everything I learned changed not longer after with 10th. I find their overly complex system of models and load outs to be one of the key reasons I haven’t purchased anything. I was going to make a sister of Battle list for a local tournament, it would have cost me $400, for 1000 point lists. I could afford it, but that isn’t how I’d like to spend my money for a single list. If they would just stop all this craziness, perhaps they could enlarge the player base. Perhaps they don’t care. I don’t know, but while I like to watch videos like these, they also server (by no fault of yours) to keep me from the game.

If the Battle Sisters lose the Multimelta there ought to be a bloody riot, considering that's one of the damage dealers in the army. Feels pretty bad to get punished for GW's mistakes in sprue choices.
@dudemcfurgusson7179
Ай бұрын
They should redesign the sprue, since the celestians don't exist anymore the extra 10 helmets is just wasted space. Move things around and stuff a multi-melta in there. Barring that, we also don't need two separate sculpts for the simulacrum. Get rid of the goofy box with the cherub sticking off it, and toss the melta there.
See this is why I remember 2nd-5th editions fondly. No half-ass bullshit by GW. The models were all basically locked to set options. You couldn't get box locked because there was no variation!
The one upside to being a World Eaters player is that we've lost so much that now we can only win. We did lose an insane amount of units in 9th, but since we got all of our new stuff AFTER Games Workshop went down this path of forced simplicity, we don't have any massive multi-weapon kits anymore. Berzerkers? Chainweapon and pistol. Unlikely to change. Jakhals? Small chainweapons with 3 upgrades. Unlikely to change. Eightbound and Exalted? Brand new models with only 2 weapons and 2 champion options. Unlikely to change. All our characters are loadout-locked, so no risk there. And if any of our "expanded range" options changed, it would still be a win. If the Helbrute got a new model, people would be ecstatic because the current one is definitely showing it's age. World Eaters players WANT new Terminators more than anything else. New units for the codex, box locked or not? Yes please. While it doesn't really excuse what's going on, I believe this is a painful transition to what is actually a decent goal on paper. I sincerely empathize with people who are now getting box-locked after previously having units that had these massive weapon options. But on the other hand, the huge variety of weapon options was itself a problem. You either had to glue, and thus make permanent, your choice of war gear and be stuck with it. Or you had to magnetize a SOUL DESTROYING amount of models just for the sake of being able to change war gear. A huge upside to having started World Eaters in 9th is that I don't have to make that painful choice. I simply assemble my excellent models and they work. The only thing I've had to magnetize was the Helbrute.
What will likely happen in regards to the fixed loadout Canoness is that GW will just make it where you can buy her separately, similar to other models that were singles in a set. (Master of Possession, Phobos Captain, etc.) Not saying that is a good thing, especially with how they love to charge such a premium on such models.
