In this video I show how I replaced my oil cooler gaskets on my 1996 Toyota 4runner. Don't let this leak fool you! I definitely thought the leak was coming from either my rear main seal or my oil pan but thankfully it was just the oil cooler which is a pretty easy fix!

This oil cooler leak happens on various Toyota models, but it doesn't get talked about enough. I've literally only seen your video and one other video a guy did on a Sienna. Well done, sir.

Lol great video I just get a 1996 4runner yesterday with a oli leak I will replace same gaskets and see what happens
Thanks, I was looking into another leak in the area and after watching your video I realize I have this issue also on my dark green 99
Man, I've been trying to chase down this leak for YEARS! After seeing this video, I took off the driver wheel & a little cover and there was the only place I couldn't get to before. I scrubed it clean under the oil cooler, fired up the 4runner and watched as it started to drip. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably slightly hellish haha Might be able to reach it through the driver wheel well though Jack it up a bit, take the wheel off and take the cover off

Thank You for this video. I had no idea about this 😊
Thank you sir for this excellent video. I had been convinced that I had to replace my rear main seal. A big job. But thanks to you I realized that it was just the oil cooler seals. You Rock!! The parts were super cheap and it only took like an hour. This video will save a lot of people a lot of trouble and expense. Seriously, thank you so much for posting this.

Thanks Aram! I'll be doing this on my birthday weekend; Earthday, April 22nd. I'll be 49yrs old. I've got a 99 4x4 SR5 manual. It's my favorite ride so far! I've got a 1992 VW GTI 16valve, & a 1986 Toyota AE86. These are the only rides I have left. Go anywhere! 🌄🏜🌌👍
SWEET HEAVENS. It's funny, cause I was browsing to try and cross reference washer fluid pump part numbers and this came up?? I'm so glad the algorithm was dumb, because I've been trying to figure out this leak for 5 years now (same diag saying it's rear main). I did just do my oil change
@aramschannel

I'm glad it helped! I'm guessing you'd loose enough that you'd basically need an oil change, maybe just wait for a couple thousand miles and do an early oil change
@yyeppesz

No need to wait for an oil change. I just did this without draining the oil. Very little comes out, less than half a quart.

Thanks for making this video. Had a mechanic tell me during an oil change that it was the rear main seal. Luckily I saw this video and found out it was the oil cooler o rings gone bad. Thanks!!!

I'm glad it helped!
My GF has a 2001 4Runner with the 3.4L V6 and had a small leak that looked like the rear main seal or something nearby. We cleaned off everything under the engine really well and kept monitoring. At one point, it looked like the oil pan seal so had that replaced but that wasn't it so she bit the bullet and had the rear main seal replaced and krap, that wasn't it either. Months went by and she lived with it as the leak was very small. Fast forward a few months, it turned out it was the oil pan drain plug! Apparently the way the air flows under the car, the oil splashed everywhere other than where the drain plug is.

Wow thats crazy! Haha
I have a 1996 3.4v6 5-speed... Not sure why the dealer parts website says the o ring 22001 doesn't fit my car. Even though the name of the part says from 95-2020
Nice & easy fix. Are you doing a video of front diff?
@aramschannel
Жыл бұрын
Ya I'll have a video soon of putting the diffs back in. I wont have the regear process unfortunately
Did you have to drain your coolant?. I seen other videos that they do. On your video seems like you didn’t disconnect the 2 hoses that are connected. Is that the reason?. Thanks and your video has definitely helped me. 🙌🏾
@aramschannel
3 ай бұрын
That's correct, I didn't disconnect the coolant hose so I didn't need to drain anything other than the engine oil
have you ever consider the oil cooler delete kit for 3.4?

Did the leak stop? I have a leak in the exact same spot. Honestly I did not know about the oil cooler. I'll need to see if it's the same on my 2.7I 3RZ-FE

So far no leak but I haven't driven yet. I'm almost done with all the work I'm doing so we'll see once I start driving
How would you go about doing this without taking the differential off? My only guess is through the wheel well somehow. It looks pretty much impossible to do with the diff on the truck.
@aramschannel
8 ай бұрын
I've never done it personally but I've heard a few people doing it with the diff in place. I imagine it's extremely tight in there. It's definitely better having the diff out, especially if you plan to do more work in there
@chkpik

@@aramschannel I just did this job with the diff and suspension in the truck. You have to pull off the splash panel in the drivers wheel well thats behind the UCA mount and go in in through the hole between the body and frame. Its a royal pain in the @%$ but its doable. Especially the clamp on the coolant hose going to the block. My O ring was missing entirely.
Always clean it before you remove the oil cooler or other components that open the door for shit getting in the motor.
Yes please update. I have a 96 sr5 runner 3.4. noticed oil on and around pan. Wondering if it might be part/all of my leak.

Think I have this issue! Thanks for a great vid!
Anyone know while he was loosening the bolt & he got it free, it suddenly cut to the oil cooler being prayed off. There was a loose hose hanging, what is it & why was it disconnected? I know the oil cooler is being held by the coolant hose that's why it didn't fall off.
@aramschannel
4 ай бұрын
I dont remember exactly but I know for sure it wasn't related to the oil cooler. I had my front diff removed, I wanna say it had something to do with that. Next time I'm under the 4runner, I'll have a look and see if I can confirm
