    The airline traveler in me is happy with the 13”. The same traveler in me says the 14” would be fine on airline tray tables too. Maybe a little bit of adjustment needed, but it would be fine. The road warrior traveler in me says “you haven’t flown since last April. Upgrade to that 16”. Excellent...very helpful review - thank you! My current 13" MacBook Pro is great and so convenient to travel with. However, I work with a large number of complex, word dense documents that beyond trying to work with multiple documents simultaneously (difficult)...simply trying to work with a single document or window requires a fair amount of scrolling (in a reasonable size format) that can become tiring and distracting. Appreciate hearing your experience with the 16" both in terms of practical use and travel...very helpful - thanks.

    I got the 16 and I love it but I have not done any traveling with it. I used to have a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 which makes all of the current MacBooks feel pretty light. I still have the custom MacBook Pro 17 backpack made by Swissgear and I carry the 17 in it. One astonishing thing about the MacBook Pro is how stuff they are, even with the additional thickness. My previous MacBook Pros are 2014 and 2015 Retina 15s and I have had a Retina 13 which I didn't use much because they were only dual-core. So very happy with the 16. If I really want a mobility laptop, I'd get the M2 Air. I actually do not need the CPU horsepower of the M1 PRO or M1 MAX - but it's the only way to get 32 GB of RAM and multiple monitor support.

    I’d rather have the screen real estate every time. A smaller screen is a limitation as much as it is a benefit. Sure, it’s lighter in your backpack or bag, but that comes at a productivity and quality of life cost. For such an expensive device, I can’t justify spending similar money for a castrated version. The 1.2 lbs difference isn’t going to cause you to blow out your back. The Army used to cram 100 lbs in my rucksack. 1.2 lbs is noticeable, but barely. I care more about what the device is like when I’m actually using it. I never understood the “but it doesn’t work well on the flight tray” argument. Nothing works well on a seat tray. Listen to a podcast, and resume work when you get off the flight. I’m not making a massive purchase like this based off of fringe use cases. To each their own, but I don’t see how this is even a debate unless it’s about the money.

I work in a hybrid setup now (some in the office, but mostly at home), and being able to have a mostly desktop experience while moving around, would be nice. However, while at home, I’ll use my 32 inch LG. Working from the couch, with a sick kid, would be better with the 16 inch. Not sure how that fits into the mix, but I could see having the extra space nice while your working from a non traditional office desk would be nice. Gary, you seem cool. I’d let you be my boss.

I shoot photos and video, write travelogues, and keep up with all the normal online stuff as I move around the world. The 14" is essential for travellers both for weight and size reasons, unless the 13" MacBook Air meets your more basic needs. I have it set to Low Power Mode and it slightly reduces the display brightness as defaults, which gives me significantly more battery life. Laptops are supposed to be light and portable. The added weight of the 16" MBP does not bother me at all. To me that added weight of the 16" is mostly in the bigger battery which I think is necessary to compensate for the bigger power draw of the M1 Max processor. Obviously, I think that the M1 Max is better suited to the 16" form factor than the 14" form factor. All in all, I find that my 16" max'd out M1 Max is highly portable and immensely functional.

    While I like the idea of having a bigger screen to-go, but I think 14” is good enough. I wouldn’t need to spec up so much that it would stress the laptop to warrant a loud fan, but I’ve owned a laptop that was louder for the last several years. Right now, neither are in price range. I guess I’ll just have to wait and save to upgrade. I’m sure these might hit the refurbish store soon 😅. At work, I’ve worked with the previous intel 16” MacBook Pro and it was a tad unwieldy to travel with or fit on a an average sized desk with an average sized monitor. I know some of the dimensions shrunk, but it still seems cumbersome plus the weight difference too. If I had the money, I’d still buy the 14” because I still don’t need all the power that the 16” can squeeze out or even an M1 Max chip.

    I would have taken either one and been fine. Same specs M1Pro 10/16, 16RAM, 1TB. I went with the 16. But the way I made my decision was 16 has bigger charger, screen, chassis (heat dissipation), and battery life for just 200 more dollars. Which you’ll also get better resale value when you upgrade in 5 or so years. I went with the MacBook Pro 16 and Studio Display vs Mac studio to replace my 2015 iMac and 2018 MacBook Pro. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t when I thought about it. With the same specs the cost is the same. Or close enough. But with the laptop you can dock it and use it like a studio desktop and have that added portability factor for work/traveling. Got $1900 out of reselling old devices vs trade in. MacBook 16 1TB currently 350 off at BestBuy. Display 100 off at apple store while educational discounts are going.

    I’m getting the 14” to replace my early 2015 MacBook Pro. Like a lot of other people, I have been wanting to upgrade my MacBook for quite some time now but the lack of ports frustrated the hell out of me, so I was ecstatic to see Apple finally got their heads out of their asses and made the “pro” an actual laptop rather than an overpriced MacBook Air. I’m getting the 14” because I always liked smaller computers and if I need more screen space… I’ll just use the sidecar feature with my iPad Pro. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Through a happy concatenation of circs I found myself in the lucky situation where I could get both - so I did. A 14” M1 Pro (rather than Max - because, better battery life), and a 16” M1Max (because, power). So I’m spending all day switching between the two (they’re synced via iCloud & Dropbox so I can work on either seamlessly). I’m really enjoying having the 14” on my lap to do things like edit websites, and of course it’s perfectly capable of editing films etc especially as a travel computer, which is why I got it. But if I had to choose one it would be the 16”, because it’s a powerhouse, and editing video on it is a pleasure whereas with the 14” it really needs an external monitor if you’re going to work on a video timeline for a few hours. So: I love them both, but the 16” for me is the essential one, the 14” a ‘nice to have’ as a travel and cafe editor.

    One more point on the weight difference: some airlines restrict carry-on bag weight (e.g., Emirates 7kgs). Carrying the lighter laptop will allow more weight in the bag for cameras & lenses, etc - the sort of stuff that you really don’t want to check into the hold.

  • @greenmedic88
    @greenmedic882 жыл бұрын

    It was a good call for Apple to make the 14 a very low compromise MBP, with all the same functionality, making the 14/16 debate... a debate. But as a 20 year 15" format laptop user, anything other than the 16" MBP as a daily use, primary computer, without the regular use of external displays, is simply too small. No point in marveling over the new displays if one is just going to use it in clamshell mode most of the time, and saving $200 on a smaller screen, $500 if buying a double binned SoC, isn't a value. It was actually the debate over the inherent advantages of the 16" chassis that had me ordering more specs than I realistically need to "take full advantage" of the larger sized, more thermally efficient, non-underclocked chips, rather than save $800 on 32GB RAM and 32 GPU cores. But for someone who doesn't review consumer products for a living, it's not like I'll be replacing it next year, in two years, or even after three years. So no buying minimum spec machines, saying how great they are, and then replacing them in a year.
