All my macbooks were 13" and I always wanted bigger screen but after switching to this new 16" I also feel it's too chunky and heavy, I think that previous 15" was a perfect size for large screen laptop and they could make it even smaller by shrinking bezels especially considering their new arm chips that don't require as much cooling as before but something went wrong. I recently saw new Huawai laptops in my local store and I was impressed by the fact that their 15.6" model weighs 1.53 kg that is even lighter than new macbook 14" but it's screen feels more like 16" model equivalent. I feel I would carry around such laptop without any problems without sacrificing screen size and I wish Apple make something similar. Now I decided to sell my 16" to replace it with 14" model even considering that 14 feels almost the same as 13 model in screen estate because ergonomics is very important to me when I'm using laptop on couch and in other non-desktop scenarios, in other cases I'd rather connect it to external monitor that makes screen size not very important.

The 16” feels much more comfortable on a lap which, I feel not many have mentioned. With a 14”, there’s a feeling of needing to push your knees together to keep it on your lap. The 16” allows you to relax and feel less “pinched”

I’m probably going for the 16”, M1 Pro, 2 TB storage, 32 GB RAM. Yes, it costs a visibly ridiculous amount of cash. But it’d be replacing a 2009 17” MBP that I’ve somehow been able to keep running for nearly 12 years now. If I get half the useful life out of it, then the maths say my cost per day compared to the expected value will be quite palatable. I _am_ one of those “specific use case” customers: a Web developer using tools like Docker and Kubernetes. I expect to be able to run some of my more complex setups on a single physical Mac, instead of the 2 or 3 it takes now - and on a MBP I can take anywhere. It’s lighter than the 2009 at 2.1 kg vs 2.99 kg. The processor jump alone will be ginormous; think a max-spec BMW racing an old reliable Model T Ford. I’m excited, tempered only by the price (even on the instalments that Apple and my bank offer). Thanks for yet another great video!

I got the 16“, M1 Pro, 32GB with 1TB SSD (I hope I won’t wish that I got the 2TB version since I was considering when ordering but decided against it) and I absolutely love it. I upgraded from a 2013 13“ MacBook Air. I‘m not a niche user, a MBA M1 would’ve been enough for my use but two USB-C ports and nothing else? No way. I love MagSafe too much to give it up. I don’t regret buying it. Worth every penny I paid for it.

Thank you Mark. I've been watching your videos. I am replacing my mid 2012 13 in i7 Macbook Pro. So, I was debating on getting the iMac 24 in or getting a bigger screen Macbook Pro. I followed your advise. I went to a retailer to see and feel both products. The 16 in MBP looks great, however my current MBP rarely leaves my desk, so mobility is not an issue for me. My old MBP I7 was upgraded to 1 Tb SSD storage and 16 gigs RAM, therefore I wanted something similar. Long story short, I needed a bigger screen computer, with at least 1 tb SSD and 16 gigs of RAM. So I ordered an iMac 24 in. These things are not cheap by any means, but your videos surely help to make a decision. Thank you again.

Super Video! You have a really nice delivery Mark. I have a 14 inch Max turning up tomorrow, I think with a 24 Core... I say I think as its £2999 from JL but it doesn't say anywhere if its 32 or 24... Hoping its 24. I returned a 16 inch last week with 16GB ram as I felt like the performance in photoshop was a tad too similar to my M1 Air. Seems photo editing requires more ram than video which I find odd. I've got really used to the Air size and screen size, sat on a cushion on the sofa!! :)

I want to be able to use one machine only on the go for my graphic design works, that's the only reason why I went for the 16" over the 14". I mean I could always use the iPad as a second screen but that's not always practical, especially because Sidecar still won't let me use it in portrait which is SO good on Duet if you're on Illustrator or InDesign or whatever to place there the windows and have the content you're working on in full screen on the Mac. But I don't really need to do that anyway, the real estate on this 16" screen is incredible

For those who liked the 15", compare the dimensions. I own a 15 and the new 16. The 16 is actually not as wide or tall as the 15. It is slightly deeper and weighs just a small tad more. I'm keeping my 16.

Hi Mark, I've been watching your videos and found them very informative. I'm in the market for one of these new M1 Pros, possibly a 16 inch. I'm in the market because the battery on my 2016 MacBook Pro, 15 inch, i7 is dying (and sometimes completely crashes the machine, while running hot enough to burn my fingers...with fans going wild!) I'm a retired graphic artist and no longer need this for work, but just for emails, Safari with lots of tabs open, Photoshop for working on holidays images and use of Apple Photos for slideshows and KZread videos (Airplay to my OLED TV) etc. I have a 14 year old who may need it for his high school level projects, possibly via Blender, Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom and maybe Final Cut Pro. I intend to get back to working on my photographic website using RapidWeaver as well. I plan to go base model since the unified memory, SSDs and chips seem to be in a whole new ballgame and maybe I won't need any upgrades. Any advice based on my needs would be great thanks!

It will be much lighter than my 15.4” mid-2012, which has travelled well… and lasted very well thanks to an easy upgrade to SSD and 16Gb RAM. Remember those happy upgrade days?! 😃👍

Battery life played a big part in my decision too that wasn't mentioned in this video. The 16 inch has about the same battery life than the M1 Air and better than even the binned 8-core 14 inch. The 14 inch isn't a great poster boy for Apple Silicon as its battery life isn't much different from the Intel models at around 10 hours of light use which many Intel models could reach

Hi Mark, thanks for another great video. I agree to most of your comments and suggestions. But there is one let’s call it group of content creators that are left out: photographers. I am with you when you state that 16 inch + higher specs is useful to a small group of creators mainly working on 4k Video editing or 3D rendering etc. The bigger screen and the higher ram or GPU cores can be useful. For all others; the base pro will be more than enough. But what about photo editing? That group more or less falls in the middle. And within that group the majority is using Lightroom (which happens to be poor at GPU acceleration but leans mostly on CPU) so the argument that more CPU cores will not be noticeable still makes sense, but additional RAM might be very usefull for exporting. But Capture One, ON1 and few others are using relatively much more GPU and thus more GPU cores makes sense. Which leads me to an interesting dilemma (created brilliantly by Apple’s pricing strategy). If you’re photographer (prof or amateur doesn’t matter) using professional editing programs, likely you’re volume warrants going for 32 Gb instead of 16 GB. But if you go for 32 GB Ram (Unified memory) then it’s only a $ 200 step to get the M1 MAX 10/24 core. Not only that, these $ 200 will give you 50% more GPU cores (helpful if you’re using GPU intensive photo editing), 100% more bandwith, 100% more video engines (which you don’t need now but who knows you move from photo into video). Now funny enough, the 16 inch M1 Max 10/24 32 Gb happens to be approx $ 200 more expensive then the 14 inch. Like video editing, bigger screen is nice for photo editing. But by selecting the 14 inch MAX 10/24 with 2 TB storage I am mobile and can work anywhere. I will quickly learn if the smaller screen is hurting my editing results (or perhaps I might get tired sooner from the smaller screen). But if that happens than I’ll patiently wait until Apple releases their new monitor which is rumored to be more normal priced then the XRD Pro screen. 14 inch with sufficient capacity for now + some extra capacity for tomorrow + big screen back home seems not a bad to choice to me Sorry for long story but your videos make people think, thus some respond and try to give feedback thanks for making the videos and don’t stop

I have the 16”. I need a big screen for work. So no real choice. But it is not really that heavy. I have gone to a smaller more laptop form fitting bag. I move around a lot and it has never been too heavy. And battery life is decent. I use Google chrome solely for WFH and it uses a lot of battery. But it goes all day and charges fast. And you can just carry a chord and the charger if you have battery anxiety. I have never had to charge it will out in the wild. All in all it is a wonderful machine for WFH.

I absolutely do not need the power of this laptop. What I do want is a solid laptop that will last me 6-7 years. I effectively want a macbook air 16" with the display lol. I am very happy with the 16" M1 pro, for this purpose, and given the investment over 6-7 years expected lifetime is pretty decent overall imo - I also earn enough to spend a bit of a premium on a quality product.

I went with both - a 16” as a workhorse, and a 14” for travelling (and to some extent, sofa & coffee shops). That might be the best of both worlds, but if I were to choose then definitively the 16”. Yes, it’s slightly heavier, but the difference in screen size is a different world, the 14” screen is hard to work on for extended periods and the 16” feels like a release afterwards. I do like the 14” very much, but I LOVE the 16”. One thing, that I originally got the 16” with 1TB but later replaced with a 2TB, that made quite a difference because otherwise I was editing with an SSD dangling from the side all the time. The ability to work with nothing plugged in was liberating (16” with 2TB is more portable than 14” with external SSD), and I think also had a positive effect on battery life. Low power mode on the 16” M1 Max is a great feature also for travel, makes the battery last more like with the lower powered M1 Pro chip when you want.

These are great machine, no question about it, though I'd skip on both at this time. I'm a stationary desktop user with 2 4k monitors and all the usual peripherals, a laptop would feel like a waste as I won't be making much use of the use case a laptop is designed for. What I would really love to see is these chips becoming available for the mac mini real soon, as I would really love to have the fully spec M1 Pro chip in that device. And I'll probably would still get the 14 inch M1 Pro if the mac mini stays the way it is now. I also feel the M1 Max is only a real option for those that purchase these machines for income related work usage. For purely personal use the Max options make no sense, way too powerful and far to expensive.

I always had a 13 inch MacBook Pro, so naturally I thought I would get the 14 inch MacBook Pro when that was announced. Fast forward to today on my brand new 16 inch. Honestly this was because I just wanted a change, a quite literal big change. This laptop is the biggest I've ever had, and while it is a big chungus, I think I could really get used to something like this, and I think this is the Mac to get. but my god it was expensive haha.

Iam also deciding which one to get. Regarding the screen size iam always wondering, why an external monitor is so often not considered? (At least in my perception) I mean, if iam on the way, the 14 inch is the better choice, and when i need to have monitor space, i could plug in eater both Laptops to an external monitor and i have enough space for anything. So with this combination the 14 inch seem to be better, unless i want to do anything on the Mac's Monitor itself without an external one.

One of the biggest reasons to think about the differences would be about battery length. The 16” would be better for battery length and going with the “Max” version, it won’t last on battery length is less than the “Pro” version.

What surprisingly stopped me from going with the 16" even though that's what I wanted was the track pad. Nobody mentions this... It's massive and uncomfortable to use.

My opinion: the 16" is too large. The screen size is only relevant if you're doing work on the go. Otherwise, you'd always be connected to a large monitor, or several of them, making the difference in screen size between the 14" and 16" relatively meaningless. And if you are doing work on the go, is the slight advantage of the larger screen worth the hit to portability? Sometimes, less is more. We see the same issue with the largest iPads... they're not particularly usable.

Personally, I agree, especially if you want to use your laptop on the plane. However, I would argue that the 16” can actually be the superior choice if you intend *not* to travel with it. Apple does this annoying thing where it’s really quite difficult to get the os to scale properly on most normal monitors. Not a big deal for most, but if you’re staring at code all day the color-fringing can really wear on you. Spending $200 for the bigger screen might be worth it in that case That said, you’re still probably better off getting the new Mac Studio with a MacOS-friendly display if you want a computer that you won’t travel with. But if you want a mostly-desktop setup with the capacity to bring somewhere else on occasion with much more ease than a desktop, the 16” MacBook Pro is a good option

@@ImpactSpace I'm the same, my last Mac was the 13 inch 2012 Macbook Pro and the 16 inch is about the same weight so I didn't get to experience the more lighter 13 inch Macbook to be able to say that weight is an issue with the 16 inch. I guess it depends on what you've been using previously

Appreciate this video, as I have to return one soon! I prefer the 16'' in terms of sound and screen, but find myself grabbing for the 14'' more often, as it's way less heavy to pick up and move around with. 16'' is better for photo editing, 14'' is better for travel.. is it insane to keep both?

I don't find the 16 inch that heavy. Maybe it's because I've been using a 13 inch Macbook Pro from mid 2012 for 10 years and that was a very heavy machine that isn't far off the 16 inch. I might have felt the weight if I had been operating with more recent Macbooks that are much lighter. I don't have great eyesight and find that small Macbooks like the 13 inch really strains my eyes, even for light office work, having a much bigger screen allows me to increase the text size better abs have an overall more comfortable work experience. I think when it comes to these 16 inch laptops KZreadrs need to consider more than just the performance aspect, some of us really struggle visually with smaller screens and having that larger screen can really much working on a computer more comfortable, especially if you don't have a home desktop setup. If I was to get around the small screen by buying monitors, mouses etc. to work on a larger screen, I'd be already be over the price difference of the 16 inch and so I think it's good value for that visual comfort I get, even if I don't need all the performance. If would be nice if Apple did the 16 inch with the 8-core binned M1 Pro or even the standard M1, but unfortunately they don't and so it's the only way to get that visual real estate. Am aspect of the difference between the 14 and 16 inch you didn't mention us the rather significant difference in battery life between the two
