I am an African American and as a young man, Don Rickles made me laugh when he held up a mirror and showed us all how absurd racism really is. I loved that he could make fun of everyone yet you knew he loved and respected all of us. I cried when he passed away he was my all-time favorite comedian. RIP Mr. Rickles thank you so much for making me laugh during times of racial unrest in the country.

I think you’re right. He reveals the absurdity of racism. He allows us to laugh at something horrible just for a moment before we go back to the depressing reality of real racial hatred.

This was the genius of Don Rickles. When Dean zinged him with that line about “you ain’t reached that year yet” (to be a great comedian), Don let the applause die down, he let Dean have his moment, and then sings him with the “thank you Jerry” line. Pure genius!

To me, the most striking thing about Don Rickles is the contrast between his act in front of a crowd and his real personality. He was one of the nicest people I've ever met. In contrast, his stage persona was one of the most or THE most abrasive person in show business at that time. It doesn't seem so bad today but in the 1960s it made some people cringe. Oh, and if you heckled him when he was doing stand-up, God help you. You'd regret it. I believe that his greatest talent was empathy. In real life, he was super nice because he had empathy. That same empathy is also what enabled him to identify the most abrasive thing he could get away with saying about you. Same skill used for different purposes. He could see right through you. There's never been anyone like him since.

It was by far the best years of my life as well. I really wasn’t a comedy that much as a child, but mom would watch Dean’s celebrity roast, and I had no choice, but to sit there and listen to it having only four channels on the TV, after a while, it grew on me. The late great Bob Hope has connections to my city. Bob was an unruly child when living in Cleveland and he was sent to what was called the “Fairfield school for boys” just outside Lancaster Ohio. There he was known as Leslie Townes Hope. he ran away from there, was never recaptured, and the rest is history. But oh, what laughs we had growing up! The 70s were by far the greatest era for television and music.

  • @theguy6037

@@hal560 exactly, attitudes changed. We now live in a more sensitive society where people are too sensitive and whine and complain when even the slightest offensive words send people enraged. Don Rickles may have made some race jokes but he allways assured his audience that he had no ill will against anyone. Don was not racist, in fact I believe he was making fun of racism. Most of humanity's humor originally came from things that were horrible. Like for many years people made jokes about Nazis. I understand how feelings changed but frankly I believe they changed for the worst. People are more sensitive to race then ever before. Dosen't racism end when everyone realizes how stupid it was and treat everyone equally? I saw more equality in this roast than anything today. Media today likes to put minorities on a pedestal like they're more special than White people and in return they spit on white people like they did something wrong. I'm white, but I have no Ill will towards anyone because of race, but if I joke about a black person I'm suddenly racist? Something needs to change!

Hal Harris I agree with you. Anybody who Rickles roasted would seemingly laugh out of embarrassment and discomfort. I also agree with you about the racism. This was funny back then because racism was more common and used more loosely. We’ve progressed a lot. Why can’t we progress and say “wait a second, this wasn’t funny and should be left in the past”? Also, insult comedy is such low form of comedy. Wow so you can make fun of people’s imperfections and build some kind of act around it? “Talent”

From Italiy as an Italian resident , I made the great discovery of Don Rickles only a few years ago when I casually found out that he was in the cast of Casino. I simply find him brilliant, and I believe that everyone can learn from this type of comedy. By the way, the lightning-fast response at minute 2 by Dean Martin is pure genius.

Jovan perez Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were the most popular comedy team of the 1950s, they broke up in 1956 and theyhad not been on good terms. They had not really talked for about 20 years. So after Dean got in his funny line when Don said “it takes years to be a great comedian” and Dean said “and you ain’t reached that year yet”, Don let Dean get his applause, and then he zinged him with “thank you Jerry”.

My son is jealous of me for growing up as a child in the 1980s I feel for him there is such a generic look to everything now. In the 20th century every decade changed, the style of clothing &hair, the music, the art. Anyone with half a brain can tell the 80s from the 70s ...then the year 2000 came. Chain stores, all the music is the same , forget listening for a new rock band u wont find one. The shows are the same and all of our towns and cities look the same. Walmart, CVS, Home Depot, . Our kids on an iPhone all day I'll take the 20th century anytime at least it had flavor and we knew what was funny this is funny, Amy Schumer...not funny.
