Don Rickles on Dean Martin Roast

Комедия

Don Rickles on the Dean Martin Roast TV show. It was a glittering night in Las Vegas, in the swinging '70s, when the desert city was ablaze with star-studded glamour. It was a night when the King of Insult Comedy, the one and only Don Rickles, took center stage as the guest of honor on the Dean Martin Roast.
In a town that never sleeps, under the glittering lights of the Las Vegas Strip, the Rat Pack and the who's who of show business gathered to celebrate the man whose wit was as sharp as a stiletto, Mr. Don Rickles. The Dean Martin Roasts were legendary, but this one stood out as a true gem.
Rickles, with his trademark smirk and unrivaled comic timing, took to the dais. Dressed in a sleek tuxedo, he was the master of ceremonies, the roastmaster, and the roastee, all rolled into one. His roasts were a spectacular blend of humor and affection, as he poked fun at the very celebrities who had come to honor him.
His rapid-fire insults spared no one. Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, and Cliff Robertson were all on the receiving end of Rickles' hilarious jabs. The audience erupted in laughter, knowing that every zinger came from a place of love and respect. In his unique style, Rickles managed to turn the sharpest barbs into the sweetest compliments.
The night was a testament to the enduring power of laughter and the unbreakable bonds between these Hollywood icons. Don Rickles, in his own inimitable way, reminded us all that beneath the glitz and glamour of the Vegas Strip, there was a genuine camaraderie and deep affection among these giants of entertainment.
Don Rickles, the merchant of mirth and master of mockery, reigned supreme as the guest of honor on the Dean Martin Roast, leaving a legacy of laughter that continues to warm our hearts and bring smiles to our faces.

Is there anything else at all that could be said of the great talent that Don Rickles was and indeed is, thanks to technology, that hasn’t already been said so many times over and over again to the point of having exhausted any and everything that’s possibly left to be said of him and his great talent! What a giant! What a mind on fire! And not only did he possess quickness, alertness, and agility of mind, to name only a few, but he was also articulate and eloquent in his delivery, to boot, especially his eloquence in those sincere and serious moments! And that closing speech… so profound…and to die for!

Funny story. Rickles picked my dad out of a studio audience on the Tonight show with Johnny Carson - he was guest hosting. He was supposed to pick the guy next to my dad. My dad had a heavy Austrian accent- Rickles started making fun of him in his hilarious way. He asked my dad “whats that pin your wearing on your jacket, is that a discharge pin?”. My dad said “it’s a 25-year pin from the NBC television network,” as he was West-coast manager of the NBC television network’s sales & sales service. Doc S from the tonight show band started playing taps as he knew dad. Dad often took clients buying commercial time on the network, to see the tonight show and meet various stars on the Burbank lot. It just so happened that Don picked the wrong bald man 🤣. I still have that footage ❤️ -such a great memory.

Truly an entertainer and friend to the old Hollywood, I must say I agree with Don Rickles father and his quote at the end of this awesome clip. I like to feel I resemble the same road traveled in a way however only more emotional for me as people not recognizing my kindheartedness but labeling me as mean spirited for only standing up in defence to the wrongs done unto my wife and children. I miss the old Hollywood and am so happy to have lived during such wonderful entertainment and entertainers.

No one was safe...and yet, EVERYONE was safe because DR made fun of everyone equally and allowed us to laugh with him and at him. It was COMEDY. It was FUNNY. We have forgotten all about the fact that jokes are just that - JOKES. This was 16 minutes of pure joy, the like of which would NEVER be allowed today....and our world and society is all the POORER for it.

DR's friends and fans know his monologue was all in good fun. He was king of the put down jokes.

The king, Don Rickles. Just imagine Rosanne Barr was cancelled for 1 joke that would have been Don's least offensive joke.

Chop them down and then prop them up. Don was an absolute genius at his style of humor. I wish I would’ve seen him live before his career ended. What a talent.

it's so amazing that his humor was so aggressive, as he put it, yet he was such a nice and loved and loving man. a very special person.
