He did say on his many interviews that he was never a joke teller so he had a rough start and realized he could make people laugh when he interacted with them so he rolled with that. I'm so glad he did. If you hadn't seen them already, check out his roasts. The man was not only funny but was pure class. Don Rickles is a comic legend. His mentor was Milton Berle and whenever I feel down I go back to Don Rickles roasts in the 60s. Didn't matter if he made the same jokes it still made me laugh whenever I watched them. Possibly the golden age of comedy when people actually dressed to the nines, no one really cared about political correctness, and people knew how to laugh at themselves. Don't get me wrong there are still funny people out there now but will never hold a candle to the legends of comedy. The fact that he started roasting A-list celebs in his late 30s with a crowd with the likes of Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra... then 50 years later roasted A-list celebs like Martin Scorsece, Robert De Niro, Johnny Depp... and got them rolling in hysterics. That's a mark of a true comedic legend right there.

Something about the attitude, the delivery just made him hilarious. He never seemed to have any kind of a prepared routine. Just came out and started ad libbing these gems. Amazing talent. Don rickles would insult and put you down. But at the end he would be so absolutely sweet and kind and say something to make you and everybody else. Feel good. He didn't have a mean bone in his body. He just wanted to make people laugh. And he did and I loved him. Rest in peace 🙏 don rickles a national treasure.
