This interview was worth watching, in spite of Howard's incessant penchant to interrupt his subject. Time and again, he stepped on Felder's answers, just when Don was about to give us the "good stuff".

Don Felder is amazing. His book is a great read. It's sad that Henley and Frey drove him out, but the quest for money, power and control often ruin the most beautiful things.

Glenn Frey never got over the fact that he wasn't the songwriter Jackson Browne was.

Don Felder and Joe Walsh. No one is more fun to watch on stage than these two masters!

Howard starts out asking a question, explaining the question, then he answers his own question and Don Felder says "That's right." So why does Felder even have to show up?

Felder is an exemplar of the perfect phrases the perfect lines that it's unimaginable how else his choice of guitar lead lines could be played. A very thoughtful dude.

What a wonderful interview. The genius behind dueling guitars in Hotel California.

Bigtime props to Don. Great interview confirming many thoughts & dispelling others. HEAVY METAL made you my favorite EAGLE!! Worth a rewatch !!!

Don Felder is a Class Act. Not to mention extremely talented. Wish Howard would close his trap.

Feldner is a gentleman. I still have the utmost respect for the man. His revelations of his recollections of debauchery saddens me, because I thought he was stronger in morals. Ill get over my high expectations of my view of him. He will always be at the top of my most highly regarded guitarist, all around mucisicians singer, song writing stage perfoermers that I've been influenced by. Not so much in the morality faithful. God bless Don Feldner. Hes made a mark on countless lives. His music will live for a multitude of generations if not forever, and how Long is that?

I agree, I think it’s because Stern is a serial interrupter and always tries to make the interview about him. In addition, at best, Sterns knowledge of the interviewee is sketchy. Don Felder however is a quality act.

Just my guess but I'd bet not only did Felder get a huge backpay settlement but he still gets paid to this day even though he's not in the band. The judge may have ruled that the LLC the Eagles created, where all members who signed that agreement had an equal share of the earnings, was never legally dissolved and still valid.

Yes he does, he was a full partner in his contract ...but was being shorted on ticket and memorability sales ! That's what got it all started Henley and Frye wasn't paying him his fair share of profits

Felder seems like a humble and level headed guy. Loved them since "Take It Easy". I have a completely different view of the Eagles now.

I have seen Don 3 Times in Concert. He is the real deal. Favorite Eagle then Joe Walsh.

Really agree with the comments regarding the constant interruptions by the interviewers spoiling the whole thing. Don was probably too polite to tell them to shut it

In fairness, I've heard stories that Henley did call Felder up and ask him to play on his solo tours, and Felder turned them down, so we'll never know at this point. I do wish that Felder and Glenn had been able to at least patch it up before Glenn passed away.

What an amazing group of stories. Stern does talk over Felder too much. Can't go back 15 years and redo this interview. Hotel California wasn't just a hit, it hit at the pinnacle of, and helped make, the greatest of California mythology. And Henley did write some fantastic lyrics to a genius guitar part. And also played some amazing drums as well.

I like this guy...and I love his playing....I'm glad he's cool....sometimes your favorite artists can really let you down when you listen to who they are when they're not playing....nice.

It speaks volumes of the hell Frey and Henley unleashed in the band that Leaden and Meisner would give up full partnerships in The Eagles to get the hell out of there.

I'm going to guess that Glenn Frey and Don Henley took more of the profits but also had to pay out more in bills and such. They probably wanted to do that so they were responsible of the business end of the band so everyone would get along and egos wouldn't keep going. The other guys agreed but Don Felder. He wanted everyone to be 100% equal. Unfortunately (even Don Henley has said) that it's Glenn's band, its always been Glenn's band.

we all know hollywood is full of world class A holes. this was about 20 years ago in a poll of waiters waitresses and bartenders in hollywood/LA glen frey and don henley were voted the two biggest A holes to deal with. now that takes being an A hole to a different level

You obviously missed the part where Felder was the business and financial manager of the band but was not allowed to perform as such by Frey and Henley. Quite a few major rock and roll players from Gainesville. Steven Stills, Don Felder, Tom Petty, and definitely a few more. I lived there for undergrad and was amazed what a rural town it is at heart. Beautiful place and part of the "real south" unlike south Florida.

Felder really toughened up the Eagles sound. Before Felder,the Eagles were sharing bills with Black Oak Arkansas and the Stampeders. After he joined, they were selling out arenas. He turned them into the supergroup they became.

In the midst of Don providing pertinent and fascinating information that answers the question we’re all wondering about, Howard interrupts to ask him about getting laid. Ugh.

What a great interview .

These were the best times on the show. This era. The interviews of this era were better. Nowadays, it's Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities that stern fans don't care about.

Hotel California is the song that separates them. It even makes the other songs they wrote earlier more definable. It makes the group somewhat ”devilish”. It brings everything together in some sense. Even King of Hollywood would never had been written without it. It has the aura of another side of California, the ”dark side”. Great song, great lyrics. Kudos to Felder AND Frey+Henley for writing it. //Niclas from 🇸🇪

Howard's gotten a lot better but listening to an interview from this era is an exercise in frustration.

Oh god, Kansas City! It's been a long time since I've been there but I saw more drugs in that town than I've ever seen anywhere else and I lived in California.

Could someone please share the title of the video (since sharing the actual video-link may not be allowed by YT) of the scene where Felder tells Walsh during the recording of Hotel California "You're showing" ? (The dialogue about it is heard from 1:22 - 2:40)

Don is the musician’s musician. All about the song and playing your instrument well. No hang ups and really sweet. I’m sure there’s a side to him that’s uncompromising, just like any musician who’s good at their craft. I’ve recorded and toured with so many bands and musicians, so I know that even though Frey and Henley were notorious curmudgeons, there are probably a lot of things Felder left out. Nobody is a saint in any band.

No one in the band questioned whether Felder was a great player and played historic solos on their great songs, including Hotel California. Glenn Frey made it pretty clear in an interview that I saw that Felder wanted equal royalties share and Frey didnt want to give it to him, since he didn't write the songs. Now, you can argue how important historic lead solos are to songs, I understand that. But I also understand a writer not feeling he needed to share a straight percentage with a non-writer. This is how bands get wrecked frequently, over royalty splits.

Nowhere is it said this was about royalties but rather about the contract to share equally the income generated by the Band! This was not about royalties but about a legal agreement that was not followed by Frey and Henley!

A good interview is when the host shuts up. Watch someone like Rick Beato to see how it should be done. I'm not a publicist for Rick. If the interview is going nowhere then jump in to steer it in the right direction otherwise don't jump in.

Felder is a class act and amazing musician. I have so much respect for him and he comes across very well here, in spite of the interviewer. Sadly Stern is apparently a juvenile lethario wanna be, stuck in his early teenage years. He constantly steered what could have been a good interview, to something about sex. I never realized he was so annoying and immature. Don would be telling an interesting story and then Stern would interrupt him with some half-witted question about sex with groupies. Hard to believe he based a career around this. I guess this reflects who is audience is. Sad. Still love Felder, but have no respect for Stern, or Robin.

Give Frey and Henley credit that was probably their smartest move ever.
