I would like to begin by saying that Mr. Don Familton is a marvelous boxing instructor. But, I find it curious that Mr. Don Familton claims that the Russian Boxing community incorporated the use of little hand weights into the shadow boxing segment of training. Actually, the implementation of wooden lightweight dumb bells (eg.,1, 2 & 3 pounds) in shadow boxing goes back to the bare-knuckle era in American boxing. These wooden dumb bells were used in conjunction with lightweight Indian Clubs (also 1,2,3 pounds as well) as part of the physical culture aspect of training/boxing drilling. The biographies of 19th century boxers such as John L. Sullivan and "Gentleman" James J. Corbett describe some of the training tools/systems implemented in the early era of American Prize Fighting.
