great whites get bigger at 20-21 feet at max. 26-32 foot Orcas don't even attack sharks lol, those guys attack whales rather than sharks. It's only some very very specific populations that attack sharks like offshore killer whales that only get 21-22 feet. The Orcas also can't even hunt and overpower a decent size shark alone they always need at least one other Orca to assist with killing the shark. The sharks will actually do this thing where they tightly circle the Orca keeping it within sight similar to how sea turtles defend themselves against tiger sharks. The only reason why this doesn't work is because Orcas hunt in groups. White sharks do get away sometimes mostly by just being able to swim away and apparently threaten the Orcas by gaping their jaws at the Orcas.

Why are we watching Flipper? That's hardly empirical 🙄 The question of one dolphin vs one shark is a stupid question, because that hardly ever happens in nature. Sharks are loners, but dolphins live in big pods. So what happens in nature is shark vs pod, and the shark usually knows better than to mess with a pod. Bottlenose don't kill sharks, but they do attack them in pods and fend them off in order to protect themselves and their pod and they are very effective at this. This is well documented and your pictures of bottlenose with battle scars, likely from encounters with large sharks, pretty much supports this while it doesn't quite support your claim of dolphins scramming and skedaddling. A few dolphins may scram and skedaddle, but a pod of dolphins will attack the shark. Studying the stomach contents of big sharks, such as great whites, it's evident that they eat pretty much anything, from tuna to cameras, tires and number plates... bottlenose dolphins are rarely part of their diet though. They may sometimes be seen scavenging on a dead bottlenose, but great whites hunting and successfully catching and killing bottlenose, that is extremely rare. Dolphins are too quick, too smart and too many. Shark would have to be very lucky to find a sick and weakened dolphin or calf that was sufficiently far away from their pod, a healthy and mature dolphin on its own would easily manage to flee.

An Orca is a dolphin Orcas are the apex predator in the sea Therefore, Dolphins win You'd have to specifically say bottlenose, common, pacific white sided or spinner or orca to get your individual answer. But the answer to the broad question shark vs dolphin, its dolphin 100%

@Becker Elaywan oh you poor uneducated individual . My guy Levyatan ate megaladons lmao... thats a Pliocene sperm whale But go ahead ill let you continue rattling off whatever concoction youve made up in your head. And whats your point about sharks surviving longer than any whale or dolphin? Whales also used to be land animals where sharks have destinctly been aquatic. Surviving mass extinctions while under the blanket of water and the depths of the sea, yeah thats no surprise theyve lasted as long as they have. That was a terrible comparison to try and put them on the same playing field historically when one was actually walking at one point and evolved into a marine mammal and wasnt naturally an aquatic predator Which again would be a testament to the whale as the shark has had 450 million years of evolution as an apex predator where the whale is roughly an 8th of that and yet the whale or dolphin (Orca) owns the ocean. Thank you for bringing attention to that

IF THE GREAT WHITE IS 18FT OR MORE THE GREAT WHITE WINS BECAUSE THEY WOULD KILL THE ORCA THE SAME WAY THEY KILL DOLPHINS BECAUSE LIKE YOU SAID ORCAS ARE DOLPHINS. What The Guy Doesn't Realise Is Dolphins Do Fend Off Sharks. But It Is In A Pod. A Pod Of Dolphins Would Always Beat A Single Great White Shark & Could Also Beat A Single Orca. But Like Dolphins Orcas Have A Pod. It's Like A Group Of 6 Or 8 Family Members Or Friends Against 1 Dangerous Thug With A Deadly Knife. It Is Dangerous For 1 Person To Take On A Thug But The Thug Knows He/She Would Lose To A Big Crowd.

escape and evade might be the strategy for one or two dolphins when confronted by a shark in unfamiliar territory. However that isn't an accurate sample of dolphin behavior because dolphins are pod/pack animals and would be at home in the places you filmed under normal circumstances. A pod of 6-12 or 25 dolphins would behave much differently with their advantage in numbers, especially if they had babies to protect and in territory that was familiar to them. Bogus video because the 'scientific' sample/control group isn't even a pod of wild dolphins behaving in their natural environment. Countless online videos dispute your claim and prove that dolphins often mob a shark to chase it away, often doing so in the presence of human divers with camera equipment to film it, jacko. Also, orcas being dolphins actively hunt, kill and eat sharks. Therefore it isnt a stretch to assume or imagine that a motivated pod of bottlenose could behave in a similar manner in defense of their family/pod unit,, territory, or perhaps even just because sharks are killers and dolphins resent them sniffing around. JoJo the bottlenose dolphin is a notorious shark killer and he has been filmed killing sharks all by his lonesome. For somebody who claims to be wise on dolphin behavior you are embarrassingly incorrect and I feel weird having to correct somebody with so much inaccurate information. One would think you dont know a harbor seal from a bottlenose dolphin. Even an unsophisticated, animal-loving fisherman such as myself knows and understand the simple truths pertaining to animal behavior when its many against one or the protection of their young. you do a great disservice to the general public and the no-doubt, unaccredited night-school in Tijuana where you received your education by attempting to sound like an expert as you pass off grossly inaccurate information. Perhaps a TV show from the 1970's wasn't the best place to search for resources to prove your case.

George Kieffer here, author and presenter of the above video. I was recently made aware of this comment. Where to begin? I encourage viewers to offer evidence should they find grounds to debate the material contained within these videos. In fact, on this particular topic regarding the popular misconception that dolphins physically confront sharks, I specifically stated: “Even though the general consensus is that ramming is common, there isn’t a shred of evidence for it. No one has documented it. If I’m wrong, tell me in the comments below.” Mr. Anderson, in your comment, you offer zero evidence that dolphins attack and ram sharks . . . instead you chose to criticize facts and post unnecessary insults. In reference to your comments: Your first paragraph contains multiple errors. I am very specific about the type of dolphin I work with - the coastal ecotype of the bottlenose dolphin. This species does not live or associate in “pods” and individuals are almost never observed in “unfamiliar territory.” They reside within a definitive home range in small groups composed typically of no more than 5 to 7 individuals. Adult males (such as our Machu and Romeo) are most often observed as a single pair group. All dolphins presented as examples in my video - Machu, Romeo, Annie, Tela - were within their familiar open water territory which is traversed daily. 7 other dolphins not included in this video also always choose flight over fight in the presence of sharks, even in the case of mothers with their calves. Your next line suggests my entire video is “bogus” even though I never claimed my examples to be a definitive “scientific sample/control group.” Yet I did include one of many examples depicting a wild dolphin fleeing from an aggressive shark. Again, my only claim is that there is no evidence from anywhere in the world of a bottlenose dolphin physically engaging a predatory shark and/or ramming it with their rostrum. If I’m wrong, prove it with evidence . . . not your unsupported assertions and invectives. Next you claim “countless” videos depicting how dolphins “often mob a shark to chase it away”. Great! Cite your sources! Post the links! Should be easy since there are so many! Show me a video of a dolphin making intentional physical contact with a predatory shark, whether by ramming or otherwise. By the way Mr. Anderson, my name is George, not “Jacko.” Next you mention orcas - and your first sentence concurs precisely with what I stated at the 6:04 mark of the video. As for the rest of your paragraph - again, you provide no evidence for your speculation. Now on to JoJo the famous bottlenose dolphin from the Turks and Caicos. “A notorious shark killer”? Sure, if you’re talking about hapless and helpless nurse sharks. Yes, this dolphin habitually harasses and kills nurse sharks. (The very same species featured in my last dive clip where I poke fun at Machu and Romeo for being so frightened of it.) The worst injury a dolphin could sustain from these bottom feeders is a nasty hickey. And yet, you still feel the need to insult me for supposedly being “embarrassingly incorrect” while you still provide no evidence for a dangerous shark being assaulted by a bottlenose dolphin. For the record, harbor seals are pinnipeds, bottlenose dolphins are cetaceans, revealing yet another misunderstanding you seem to have about me. I do agree that there are cases where a group of many prey animals might overwhelm a single predator. But we’re talking about the specific allegation of bottlenose dolphins ramming a shark. Again . . . prove it! Also, I most certainly take exception to your allegation that I “do a great disservice to the general public” and my alma mater, (Perdon mi amigo, no Tijuana). Over the course of my 37 years working daily with bottlenose dolphins, both in the wild and in human care . . . I have instructed legions of students who are more than happy to disagree with your opinion of me - as is the faculty of the marine biology department where I studied at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. And finally Mr. Anderson, you might have noticed that I have been able to reply to your comments and address your misinformation without disparaging your character. I have not made any blind assumptions as to your credentials, how you gained your knowledge and experience with bottlenose dolphins, or questioned where you went to school. I am simply defending the accuracy of my video highlighting how a silly old TV show holds the origin story of today’s tenacious yet preposterous claims of dolphins picking fights with sharks - a busted myth to which you wholeheartedly cling. I respectfully await your evidence to the contrary.
