I think they should also had done it once with a slow leak, and seeing if sharks ever approached. Suddenly releasing it must be the scent equivalent of shooting someone stood right next to you, you're going to freak out.

This is something that is generally accepted fact, the sharks running from dead sharks, but the balloon probably caused the initial reaction.

Well this is an artificial smell. Its a replicate of a chemical dead sharks release when they die. Evidently its most effective within its own specific species. The real thing is more effective.

Because Sharks are extremely sensitive to sounds/vibrations and there is still a LOUD sound produced by that balloon when the "zip strap" was cut, the sound/vibration from that NOISE travels A LOT faster than the smell can, and that is a scientific FACT. They were not freaked out by the smell but by the noise/sound/vibrations produced. Do it again with ANYTHING inside of the balloon (maybe even NOTHING) and they will react the same, 100%.

Yes, it certainly seems like they were startled more by the sudden pressure change inside the balloon than anything else.

I think because sharks have such of an amazing smell, and the fact that it smells really bad to humans, I think it smells 10x worse to sharks because of the power of their nose.

It only smells BAD to us because our evolutionary traits have summed up a natural distaste for rotten or inedible organic matter. Sharks, however, have a different diet which consists of materials that would actually be harmful for us to eat.

Where is your control? The release of the repellent was explosive; shoe me that the same thing won't happen with any sort of violent release of air into the water.

I just commented about that. I agree an explosive release of air OR "repellant" is enough to scare the sharks. They are skittish to loud noises such as bubbles from a scuba diver (which takes them a little while to warm up to the noise). I think it was the explosive release that scared them off.

I wonder if it's the actual smell of a dead shark that repels them, or if it's a very sudden change and a very distinct smell that scares them off. I wonder if you used dead sheep, or even perfumes, or volcanic ash, if they'd react the same way simply because it's an overwhelming smell they weren't expecting so suddenly and so overpowering.

3:40 exactly! This works on sharks that are subject to predation such as blacktips nurse reef sharks etc. However, as a shark fisherman, I will tell you that tiger sharks, hammerheads and bulls will READILY eat these smaller species, meaning that dead shark scent my have the opposite of the intended effect. Also, the noise of breaking the bag open may have played a part.

truth that it may be a specific breed of shark that it works with - due to the rate of diffusion its effect only temporary- which may need to be dropped in deeper water or in different temperatures to ascertain if it is only specific to the conditions of the water. Kudos that you were in the water with the beasties without any ill effects!

KURU That would do you know good. You wouldny be able to use it when attacked out of no where. How ever...if you wish to try it which i advise you not to khuz it is obvious it doesnt work....if it did the sharks would not have returned a short 5 min later but you shoukd put the liquid on your body then surf to really test if it works or not

You ran two tests only, to have solid data and good statistics you might want to run that test at least 1000 times. That's a massive gamble to come to a solid conclusion on only two tests.

Looking through the comments so many people are saying that the sharks are just scared of "the balloon pop" but even Great White sharks are repelled by the smell of dead shark. October 4, 1997 a Orca killed a Great White just 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco and all Great Whites fled the area and didn't return for a year.

Interesting they didn't think it might send them into a killing frenzy...

I wonder if pepper spray would work as well on sharks? Works well on dogs and bears why not sharks?

Chris D'oulmeth They have jells now that can be pushed out by the canister. But hey you can test it by spraying from a boat get some sharks around the boat and just spray the water and see how well they swim in it.They all disperse that's a good sign.

Cold Duck good suggestion but pepper spray has oils in it which don't dissolve in water then also even if it were to work, the person who sprays it would land up swimming right into it or the water could draft it into your scuba gear/penis tip/eyeballs etc.

I've checked other scenarios where they test it without exploding balloons and it did work, 9 minutes before they came back.

what im curious to know is if this only works for dead shark extract. or does it work as well with other strongly pungeant essences. kind of like when someone uses sound against dare devil or superman.

That's a pilot study at the most. Appreciate their trial and yet they could have done that better.

It needs to become a trend before you confirm. You still need 1 more test.

My guess is the dead shark repellant could be of many shark speses or just one great white female.

Mythbusters has been such an intrinsic part of my childhood, that I'm a used to seeing the Heinemann in a wetsuit.
