Go for its gills then, sharks needs to keep swimming for water to go trough their gills(except for some special species of shark) and they are very sensitive so you could fend it off or even kill it:)

Also a great white doesn't have eye lids like some other sharks so it's eyes are still vulnerable regardless if it roles it back or not

you can still rupture and destroy an eyeball without having to look directly into the pupil while you do it, dude. rolling the eye back only protects the cornea, lense, pupil, (vision clarity of the eyeball) from abrasions or scratches. The eyeball itself, if punctured/perforated would hurt, get infected, and rot slowly while it contaminates the animals bloodstream with pus and infection as it progressively gets more and more painful until it's removed, heals over or the animal dies - meanwhile the animal has lost 1/2 its vision (one eye), ability to spot/hunt prey or evade larger sharks/orcas. It's a potential death sentence. If you destroyed both eyes the animal would have virtually no chance of survival unless it was a pod/pack animal and the pack/pod had the where with all to constantly hunt for and feed the blind animal (which only humans do and perhaps some higher primates). Another and perhaps more effective option is to stick your hand in the gills and tear out or otherwise destroy the sensitive, delicate respiratory-organ material inside. This would be akin to somebody shoving their arm down your throat and swirling a steak knife around in your lung. This would weaken the animal immediately and possibly cause it to suffocate, bleed out, or faint within minutes. Such a wound would change an animals motivation from hunting you into escaping your painful influence rather quickly. while removing a hook from a 25lb channel catfish I accidently put my thumb in one of its gills trying to control its thrashing. The animal croaked/growled in disapproval as blood immediately flooded from both it's nostrils. I had never seen that before in my years of fishing, but it was apparent that I damaged the gill, caused the animal pain, and compromised it's respiratory system all from a simple slip of my thumb (completely unintentional). Catfish have a spine on their dorsal fin and pectoral fins that seacret a mildly toxic poison. I was trying to avoid getting spined while removing a hook from a monster fish that swam away strongly upon successful release. I pray I didn't kill that fish (I didn't thumb it that bad). I am confident the fish survived as catfish are notoriously tough and this one was huge, strong, healthy, incredibly powerful and mildly intimidating when it was just me and him on the bank of Lake Ralphine at 11pm.

I agree that the punching tests are inconclusive. You don't need to really punch reef sharks bc they don't seem to be that interested in you in the first place. You gotta jump in the water with decent sized bullsharks, tiger sharks, or great whites to figure out if that will work or not.

The only thing I knew about defending myself from a shark was a punch in the snout to make it panic, punch in the eye to make it panic and putting your hands in its gill slits to make it panic. It's all about scaring it or showing it that you are not food. Sharks don't feel pain so no matter how hard you hit it, it won't care unless it realizes you damage it.

a sharks eye is actually armour plated with a thick cartilage like substance. you would need a crow bar to pull it out! so unless you have a knife and room enough for a good swing, I would avoid the eyes.
