The annual Dallas Conference on Science & Faith explores exciting scientific discoveries about the origin of the universe, the origin of life, and the development of biological complexity, as well as critiquing the scientific and cultural impact of Darwinism. It also deals directly with the intersection of science and religion and the role that faith plays in scientific research and study.

Stephen C. Meyer received his Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge. A former geophysicist and college professor, he now directs Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture. He has authored most recently the New York Times best seller Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design (HarperOne, 2013) as well as Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design (HarperOne, 2009), which was named a Book of the Year by the prestigious Times (of London) Literary Supplement in 2009. For more about Stephen and his research visit darwinsdoubt.com/ .
In 2004, Stephen C. Meyer, one of the preeminent scientists studying the origins of life, ignited a firestorm of media and scientific controversy when a biology journal at the Smithsonian Institution published his peer-reviewed article advancing the theory of Intelligent Design. Then, in his two bestselling books, Signature in the Cell and Darwin’s Doubt, he helped unravel a mystery that Charles Darwin did not address (How did life begin?) and offered further scientific proof to bolster his arguments on the history of life and our origins, concluding that life was designed. In those previous books, Meyer purposely refrained from attempting to answer questions about “who” might have designed life. Now, in The Return of the God Hypothesis, he brings his ideas full circle, providing a reasoned and evidence-based answer to the ultimate mystery of the universe, drawn from recent scientific discoveries in physics, cosmology, and biology.

I never tire of listening to Dr. Meyer-Such a wonderful speaker. Parts of this talk reminded me of this quote by Baha’u’llah: “…whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is a direct evidence of the revelation within it of the attributes and names of God, inasmuch as within every atom are enshrined the signs that bear eloquent testimony to the revelation of that Most Great Light.”

Stephen Meyer is truly a national resource, intelligent, knowledgeable, and winsome. Intuitively, Meyer's thinking is the opposite of quackery. I have always been interested in the issues presented by the question of origins. Scientific materialists insist that everything we know is a function of matter and energy. Early on, that puzzled me, since we now know that life is defined and driven by DNA. DNA is highly complex, highly specific functinal information. What is the mass, texture, and dimension of information? It has none. It is neither matter nor enegy. It is perfectly non-material. And yet, living things are defined by it. Thus, logicailly, it seems to me that the claim that everything in the universe is defined by matter and energy is defeated. Scientific materialism is therefore refuted. Surely, such reasoning very directly supports Meyer's thesis, he can be seen as a very formidable advocate for the God hypothesis.

One of the things that has ALWAYS bothered me about the darwinistic evolutionary debate is that only the fauna side is very discussed but why isn't flora development ever talked about. For example what evolutionary mechanism is responsible for the movement from simple plants such as algae into a rose? Maybe the argument can be made for algae into grass as it would be splashed onto land but what motivates a simple plant to develop "thorns" much less attractive color or scents.... plants are perfect examples of living things that are completely oblivious to their surroundings so how could the plant be "aware" of bees in the first place to trigger the development of non photosynthesis pigments or the inducing aroma of the flower or even if oblivious how could it develop thorn to defend itself?

Interesting fact; From earths perspective we are only capturing a certain maximum degree of visibility with respect to planets. So every time we make a discovery of a planet, its size, composition, orbit, etc; that is solely because our viewing angle is just right to detect it. In other words, when we detect one planet, there are likely over a hundred more that we simply cannot detect because our viewing angle doesn't allow us to. So we can infer how many planets there are in the universe even though we just can't see them.

The exponential expansion of materialism in parallel to Darwin's lifetime inevitably led to the enthusiastic embracing of "The Theory of Evolution" as a refutation of God. In parallel, there became a direct correlation with Marxism, attendant to the ensuing rapid intrusion of anti-theism into the realm of scientific thought. This created a state of emotional and intellectual emptiness that is now manifesting as both active and benign mass depression - an anti-God psychosis within the academic establishment.

To be fair to Dawkins. His quote specified "In a purely material universe"... what we find is pitilessness and indifference. I would just say, that is completely correct.. IF we had a purely material universe. The problem with Dawkins' quote is that he was presupposing materialism. Also, it is very telling that those two qualities are literally the opposite of true love and love itself is not reducible to the material.

Nature is pitiless and indifferent. It might not what you would like it to be, but your feelings have nothing to say about what is true. Nature is also beautiful and inspiring. Love is a bond between humans, we make the world livable for each other. Is this all not enough? Why invoke anything metaphysical, when we have each other and nature to inspire us and love us? It is simply a hypothesis born from desire, but please realize there is not much left to be desired!

Why do we need science to point us anywhere? Science, from the pretensions of those who worship at its altar, is simply the reasoning of men in their attempt to understand the material world. The mind is more than sufficient evidence that there is so much more beyond the material world; in fact, without the mind, there is no material world, for who or what would perceive it? One doesn't need science to find God. One need humility.

Darwin's theory actually proves that God not only create species, but also give them the ability of adaption, meaning that species have the capacity of adapting themselves into each specific enviroment for survival. Darwin's book name should be changed from "the origin of species" to "the adaption of species".

The typical argument against fine tuning of the universe seems to be that life originated in the conditions that were present. If the parameters had been different, then the resultant life would have been different, and these different parameters would appear to have also been fine tuned. (A jigsaw puzzle piece is always going to precisely match the spot it fits in, regardless of which puzzle is being discussed).

It is an irony that only a conscious mind can deny an intelligent creator is in itself proof that he is. Because only a conscious mind can decide to be an atheist. Many won't get this. But the atheist now has to come up with 'information' that explains the forming of information. If there was no conscious mind then we would not need to explain how information came about.

I am reading "Darwin's Doubt" and I'm hoping that someone can answer this question. How does one do a molecular study on a fossil that's been dead millions of years?

In the inquiry whether nature is evidence for design, have you considered the criteria for intelligence in signals from deep space that the scientists running that project use? I don’t know at all but would be interesting. Perhaps several dots and dashes in a pattern sets off an intelligence warning From deep space, and the genetic code in every living thing on earth is dismissed.

I would add that is not just "information" that leads to a mind, but codified information leads you to a mind that created it.

I would like have a conversation with Stephen I wish there was a way to speak with him. I have a lot of doubts and would just like to have someone far smarter than me help me.

@bubbythebrow153 "I would like have a conversation with Stephen I wish there was a way to speak with him. I have a lot of doubts and would just like to have someone far smarter than me help me." So then maybe aim a little higher. Go see how his "Signature in the Cell" book was received by the rest of the scientific community. They panned it. And then he whined. And then they laughed. He is laughable.

It’s always fascinated me that Georges Lemaître still doesn’t get the credit he deserves when discussing Hubbles constant (that Lemaître discovered 2 years before Hubble) or the origin of the Big Bang (which Lemaître also inferred first from his equations and called the ‘theory of the primeval atom’)
